I can see what you're getting at, but I think most people default to goody two shoes playthrough anyways and end up missing content. I think teasing evil as a shortcut to power is a decent way to go about it, while having the guilt be the punishment for the player's actions. You'll still feel terrible even if you benefit. Black Souls constantly teases the option, but in most cases the result ends up being similar to most RPGs with evil options where you just end up depriving yourself of content (in this case powerful party members) for no reason. Aside from maybe a shortcut to C ending, but you have to know about that requirement beforehand.

I think BS2 handles things a bit better in this regard even if rape usually doesn't net you many benefits. The obtuseness of the ending requirements nudges the player to loop more often and experiment with all sorts of options, so they tend to experience both the good and evil scenes. And at least in Jubjub's case there's a gameplay benefit to both keeping her covenant or raping / killing her. Or Kuti whose rape route nets you more lore.

Only BS1 is on steam right now and it's pretty good. The steam release itself is complete shit since it cuts pretty much the entire game, but you can download the patch to make the game whole. At that point, it's the OG English release with uncensored CGs and a new font for text. It's probably the best release of the game available that way

- Generally speaking leveling up the protagonist is very ineffective use of souls compared to leveling up your party members. For the former you may want to instead purchase colored souls that raise your stats, instead of spending all your souls onto a few measly level ups. But usually your party makes up the brunt of the damage.
- Experiment around with different gear for the protagonist. Like the other anon said you get 4 ring slots (you have to scroll down in the equipment screen to see the other slots) and weapons as well since they can change how you play. I made the mistake of rolling through the entire game with fully upgraded knight sword and feeling very underpowered.
- You can play blind and find most stuff without having to consult a walkthrough. You should at the very least aim to get both C and D endings before moving onto BS2, as those are the most important ones in terms of story beats and lore. You'll also most likely find several other endings just by playing normally.

Just wander around and go somewhere else if the current area is proving too hard. There are several high level regions you can accidentally stumble into relatively early on that can kick your shit in. Unlike BS1 where you can clear almost everything in a single playthrough, the second game makes its regular endings available much earlier on (you'll know when) and encourages you to go through NG+ more often, especially the DLC areas that are built for you to be several cycles in stats and gear wise. No need to explore everything in one playthrough.

There's a crapload of shitty gear but you should definitely play around with different weapons you come across, since changing them mid-battle is a free action and many of them have unique abilities and buffs you can use.

The closest thing to a suggested path on your first run is the dialogue chain starting in Lutwidge when you talk to the detective after leaving the Rabbit Hole. Otherwise you're entirely free to do and go virtually wherever.

You can find the strongest weapon in the game in the first 5 minutes if you know where to look, and one of the best armor slots in about the same amount of time. Head and Off-Hand slots won't have a whole lot of good shit for a while, though for Off-Hand you'll probably want to use a gun early on. Don't worry too much about Rings, just slap on whatever Speed rings you can find lying around early on.

I've been wondering a few things about Black Souls. I heard it's inspired by novels and well known tales such as Wonderland, Oz, so on and so forth, but I wonder if there's any spiritual message, or rather, esoteric knowledge or anything like that? The game's main themes are artistic creativity, player agency, guilt, love and madness. As for whether there's any message... eh, not really. The way the themes are explored, apart from creativity and player agency, are rather shallow too. The game handles the topic way better than Spec Ops: The Line and Undertale, but if you're expecting Pynchon-style esoteric knowledge you'll be disappointed. It's "just" a well-told story.
Where the series shines is the writing style and structure. It likes to use modernist literary techniques, it like to disorient the player and doesn't hold your hand, the game trusts the player to put the pieces together yourself. Picture 13 Sentinels but less handholdy, by the time you finish the game you'll still have plenty of unanswered questions instead of the game spoonfeeding you the answer.

Personally, I don't see anything specific to this story besides what Lovecraft already does.
And Lovecraft is basically an accidental occultist by himself, he was atheistic and all of that, but by dreaming got into contact with something out there and it shows, not all his writings are "inspired", but many are.
What I mean is that there is no overt usage of occult knowledge that I could find by quickly recalling the story, an example of a famous series using occult lore a lot is Touhou, which has it in spades.
If you have something in mind tell me and I'll analyze it, I don't remember everything about the games perfectly, I've read quite a bit on the topic, so ask, I'll answer after 12 hours passed from this moment.
