Master of Orion 1
I've played MoO2 to death but never the first one. what's the best way to play this game? vanilla, with patches, 1oom, etc? I did try Remants of the Precusors but I really do not like the art and interface - I want to play the original MoO 1

why are my ships retreating when I try to auto-resolve?

I had a situation where I attacked a planet - went through the battle manually for the first 75% of the battle - was definitely going to win and so I hit the auto-resolve button and my ships all retreated. And so then I reloaded my game, send my ships to the same planet and immediately hit the Auto Resolve battle button only for them to retreat - what's the deal?

Dev wanted to make a point that a good diplomat not necessarily has a pretty face. It was intentional.

I will say - the game is extremely TIGHT - a lot of these other 4x games are quite a slog to play. everything in Moo1/ROTP is so abstracted out. Economy is simply BCs, and if I need more or less of things I can literally dial them in with sliders. it's a nice design and is almost a "coffee break" style game for me which I like. anything else similar to this? 10 Min Space Strategy is free ware and well is extremely fast to play. I love games where I can beat them in a maximum of around 2 sittings (lets say a couple hours per each sitting Max). I'm in my 30s with kids guys it's over, fml, etc!
Anonymous No.1999087 [Report]
oh and any combat tips? I don't have an intuitive understanding of combat at all and it's an interesting (but painful) situation where you design and build a lot of X, only to then discover a new technology and think to yourself : well is X something I should scrap in order to upgrade? given that they are only 6 design slots total. I'm emulating the AI a little and so I'm making: a shit load of Small 1x Laser ships, a decent amount of Medium ships with good computers, armor, shields, Laser and Missile, and then just some huge ass ships that have it all and take years to make one of them

Darlok is A tier. The massive bonus to spying gives an incredible ability to play from behind while stuck in a corner vs. max difficulty AIs by just stealing everyone's tech. Past a certain point they either don't need to invest at all in research or invest only in computing to more effectively steal everything else, and stolen techs are far cheaper than researched ones. Giving away excess techs lets you maintain good relationships and framing other races when you steal techs lets you break up power blocs and give you an opportunity to expand. Possibly even S tier for truly cursed start positions but certainly way above trash B and C tier races.

Any tips on shipbuilding for early/mid/endgame on MoO1. I get to the part where wars generally start and always feel like I'm producing too much/too little ships, and I don't really know what builds are effective.
Anonymous No.2026444 [Report]
>>2026357
it wary
what difficulty you play? who you play? against whom? what tech you have?
if you want some early tips I usually produce some scouts to man all stars in range plus some Long range medium ships with lascannons to contest enemy colony ships at far away stars and some fighters closer
Anonymous No.2028252 [Report] >>2028260 >>2028276
>>2026357
in moo1 sometimes the computer neglects ecm completely, so what you do is make a medium ship design that has 2 shots of the best missile you can fit. all you will do in combat with that is mass that ship, a stack of it fires 2 shots and retreats. if the missiles dont kill your enemy in 2 shots you can at least whittle them down or well, you need to upgrade your missile tech
Anonymous No.2028260 [Report]

oh and if you want to be extra cheesy make several designs of the same so you can have more than one stack of it.

funny i played MOO1 to death and only recently started MOO2... MOM is better.

i like MOO1's UI and mechanics better. except the part where computer cheats like hell and can kill you with hundreds of ships in early game if one with them starts with an Aggro or Erractic personality. or worse, starts on a planet right next to you.

>Attack is more chance to hit and Defense is more Evasion / Dodge

Attack> Defence. cheapest way to win the game is find Orion ASAP. then build 1000 to 2000 small ships with mass drivers(depends on difficulty mode) or something that halvens armor. kill the Guardian that guards Orion, get mad tech. build super duper Death Star ship, kill everything.

though with 2000+ small ships of mass drivers, you can probably already defeat 1 or 2 races.

you mean MOO1? i don't remember that. cause i used my MOO2 telepaths to mindcolonise an undefended planet, and the computer player got buttmad at me immediately and declared war.
sending my spies to blow up one of their buildings only made them slightly more angry at me.

yeah MoO 1
the diplo was more fluid and allowed more maneuvering between peace and war
usually AI will not start war over shooting some of their ships over contested planet instead deciding to send strongly worded letter
of course constant small scale skirmishes, incursions over their colonies and pushing around would eventually lead to war(faster for some races) but its not like AI wasn't trying to do the same
like you better be wary that Bulrathi AI could and would send some troops transports onto your newly founded colony even without military ship if they get visuals at it - another reason to keep their ships away from scouting yours and contested planets
feel more dynamic and natural than civ diplo ''you attacked our worker - its total war time''

just on Design/Style pts alone? the ants/Klackons are surprisingly cawaii in both MOO1 and 2. the artstyle became quite creepy in MOO2 IMO. like Aliens but with more neon colours on the aliens. WTF did the ZUCC/Sakkra turn into purple lizards in MOO2?!?

otherwise i also like the birdbrains/Alkari but they somehow turned into dinosaurs in the sequel.
---

fun-ness to play? Sakkra because high growth kickstarts early game faster, when usually you will be wait many turns for your populations to build up and build buildings faster.

my old endgame ship designs from 10 yrs ago....
>inb4 imo we're old!

i made a low-tech "anti-bomber" stack just to deal the computer sending lots bombers to my planets.
by the end, i also grew a habit of putting at least 1 bomb or virus on my ships because i was having more trouble with missile bases than the computer's badly designed ships.
even put 1 on my colony ship for bombing undefended planets to speed things up.

>best way to play
checking my old files, i found that i downloaded some fanmade editors but never used them? one of them lets you design custom races, so you can play MOO1 with a custom race, like in MOO2. forgot the name of the editor or the dev.
