The problem with all FE hacks is that they feel too western. They don't try tob emulate the inherent japaneseness of its writing and characters. That's why they often feel so off.

The series isn't dead, but it did kill the majority of online discussion and activity regarding the mainline entries, we'll have to wait for another entry to really see if there's long term damage to the IP or not.

The newest games are on the switch but the previous games are on 3ds. Anything before 3DS you can play on an emulator EZ. The Japanese games you need to download translation patches for using NUPS patcher.

I found the FEgirls romhack for FE8 to be very fun. No clue what is going on because only the mechanical stuff is translated but it has some cool mechanical set ups to play around with.

Excluding the unofficial guide, Drums of War and Dream of Five Definitive Edition are both solid vanilla-like hacks that are relatively recent. The Dark Amulet has some problems, but is better than Deity Device when it comes to story-first hack, and it's getting a sequel soon. Cerulean Crescent and The Morrow's Golden Country are decent, but might be a bit too Skill Emblem-y for some. Hag in White is also good if you ignore half of the girls being butches.

None of the Fire Emblem games are good, you have to dwell within a Nintendo bubble and refuse to play other strategy games to believe otherwise

I'm wrapping up my second playthrough of the Binding Blade on normal. Unlike the first time, I did this without save states on hardware. The tier list reflects how my run went and isn't meant to be objective.
Here's some other things about my run:

>Recruited all characters
>Banned the arena
>Banned a couple of top tier characters so I would use some lesser used ones
>Could only use the banned characters on their starting chapter and the map where Miledy recruited Zeiss
>Promoted all of the characters that didn't go unused, with the except for Lot and Clarine
>D tier characters were used only once or twice
>F tier characters were used only once but had a significant drawback to using them

Compared to my first run, I thought FE6 was fair but I made a lot of dumb mistakes so I had to restart a lot. Even though there's a lot of bullshit, I actually think the game is overall better than FE7. I think I'm getting close to a A or B rank score but I definitely had to grind a ton of characters. I really want to play hard someday but am certainly taking a break before then.

Good: Very good presentation - custom music, sprites, animations. Ambitious. Has a few fun ideas for character concepts and story-gameplay integration. Halfway decent story when it gets serious. Mostly decent maps.
Bad: Overly ambitious. A few chapters are overly gimmicky/puzzle emblem-ly. It suffers badly from tone swings, with FE4-like plot clashing with constant jokes. The second half feels a bit aimless.
Depending on the player: a large amount of secrets, often with really good rewards, and different supports giving different rewards are either fun or irritating. The main face of the hack is a cancelled e-celeb, and most of the discussions about AS devolve into talking about him.
The prequel Rebellion Saga seems to have fixed most of the complaints, I have heard.

Perfectly fine hack with a decent gameplay gimmick of having one healer, a low amount of skills, a small amount of impactful secrets for NG+, and a decent story with strongly characterised side cast due to implementing base conversations. It entered its period of life where the romhack community treats it closer to The Last Promise as an early, fully completed modern hack with some flaws that's still remembered fondly. It's a decently done, polished, and overall consistent in quality hack that mostly suffers from an overly wordy plot, slightly underbaked second half, and a shitty ending. If you played some of the newer hacks, it might feel underwhelming, but it's still a good time, especially if you like ironmanning.

Honestly the word I'd use to describe VQ is "perfectly serviceable but longer than it needs to be without any flash or pay off" As long as you don't go into it thinking it'll be the second coming of Christ you might get some enjoyment, but I didn't find any of the units fun to play with, they all just kinda function okay.

Some of the team reunited after a solo project or two and finished it, including that route split. It retained the good presentation of the OG, while improving the plot and reworking the gameplay to be more modern. The early parts are reimaginings of the OG with more creative freedom in the second half. Newish, very solid, and very vanilla (it doesn't even have viewable growths), so it battles Shackled Power for the "newbie's first romhack" title, but it has a reputation of being the more difficult one.
