Why the fuck are all good companions aserai? I try to find a companion for every role and for formation captains, and my core party looks like a band of refugees.

No, not really. The visuals for vanilla armors are butt fuck ugly and often look like fantasy tier larp gear. Its best to just rip out the native stuff entirely and replace it with better armors from a more focused time period.

You can manage that by having the jav infantry just ahead of or behind some polearm infantry (and/or supported by archers to inflict some casualties while the cavalry are outside jav range).

Never gonna happen, you're gonna have a bunch of little packs of specific armors and variants from periods just as inconsistent as vanilla and all widlly disparate in quality. It's what we already have

Join a kingdom as a merc, but take care not to get involved in losing battles, you're better off not joining armies most of the time.
Also make sure to keep yourself stocked up on horses that give you the party speed bonus.
