No, not really. The visuals for vanilla armors are butt fuck ugly and often look like fantasy tier larp gear. Its best to just rip out the native stuff entirely and replace it with better armors from a more focused time period.
Anonymous No.2141396 [Report]

You can manage that by having the jav infantry just ahead of or behind some polearm infantry (and/or supported by archers to inflict some casualties while the cavalry are outside jav range).

Guns + no shields really is disgustingly powerful. Though the added expense for a real army of gun troops is pretty insane as well. I'm having to spam mastercrafted spears worth 50k every once in awhile to not go bankrupt. I don't think it's possible to maintain an army of gun troops without some serious happy merchanting.

>Kyushu's samurai troops can become tier 7 gun troops with 270 gun skill
>There's a tier 6 alt path where they drop the gun and pick up a handheld cannon

Still haven't figured out why you'd ever pick that path except to make missing the rider and hitting the horse a guaranteed dismount, but oh well.

Does anyone here know the history of the original Mount and Blade? I need your help

I am doing research for a project that involves this game, and I need to know the very first proper playable build of this game. I am using this as a resource.

https://mountandblade.fandom.com/wiki/Mount%26Blade_versions

The way I understand it, the what would become Mount&Blade started out life as "War Rider", or at least that was the first publicly available version of the game. Here is a video on it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNFuonuDu-4
Thing is that the game is very incomplete, and obvious beta. Next, the first proper M&B release was version 6.01 in 2005, what I want to know is how complete was this version. I can't find anything on it.

What I am looking for is the first version of the game that was relatively stable and complete. Obviously, the main game released in 2008, it was published and sold in stores, but for my project, I need to know when this game was more or less in what we now know as "Early Access" stage, ie mostly playable and everything that's there is more or less complete but the game itself is still unfinished. If anyone could help me out, it would be appreciated.

From what I am seeing, M&B 1.00 looks really rough. I remember when this game came out, but I never really paid attention to it that much, I was actually surprised nobody talks about the original game anymore and just consider Warband expansion to be the actual original game.

Do you remember differences between 1.0 and .808 release? I'm talking map, quests, items ect. was it all more or less there, or were there major features still not there at the time?
Anonymous No.2142719 [Report] >>2142722
>>2142713
Don't remember much, .808 still had Zendar and the river bandits, but no questline to speak of outside of a small tutorial you got from a guy in the city.
Anonymous No.2142722 [Report] >>2142741
>>2142719
Was the map similar to how it looks in 1.0 or did it look more similar to how it was presented in War Rider? Were the other factions present or just the original 2 from WR as well? Do you remember the UI resembling the final product or did it still have Comic Sans text?
Anonymous No.2142741 [Report] >>2142744
>>2142722
Pretty sure it had almost everything the current M&B version does.
The removal of Zendar was the biggest thing that happened, I think the ransom brokers were added sometime between then, with the one special "slave trader" from Zendar moving to Tihr and giving you a flat 50 denars for any troop.
Anonymous No.2142744 [Report] >>2142750 >>2144870
>>2142741
Thanks for your help. I will still ask around, but the way I understand it, considering how incomplete and rough even 1.0 release was, it seems that the early 2005/06 releases were more or less just more primitive M&B classic, so it fits the "Early Access" definition.

Do you remember the modding scene well? How big was it, and do you remember what the earliest mods were like? What I mean is, did modders already start working on the game as far back as .601 or was modding still relatively new as of .808?

I don't mind them in concept but they have zero roleplaying potential as is. Their canned backstories and traits don't really matter at all because they are interchangeable so if they don't like something you can just go get someone else for the job. They don't have any special interactions like Warbands' had and they don't take advantage of the random generation because the traits themselves don't have enough non-combat effects.

Things they could do for example
>depending on their backstory they gain a crime rating when entering territory owned by the faction or city they come from, have to fight/bribe parties trying to seize your companion or spend influence points, this will guarantee their loyalty
>dickass companions might straight up desert if you are about to enter a battle with terrible odds, or if you have low morale and not enough money, which they will try to steal from
>companions might have quests attached to their backstory you can go and solve to recruit them for free(avenge dead relatives, clear their name with your speechcraft/influence, hunt down their nemesis, restore their household)
>good loyal companions will collect and ransom soldiers from your party that escaped after losing a battle and track you down with them to rejoin your party
>patriotic companions will work for less if you are part of a kingdom or leave you if you join an enemy kingdom
>companions with a beef with a certain lord will try to duel them or incite a battle when meeting them, companions that hate a town will start fights and give you trouble, higher leadership skill will tard wrangle them better

would it really kill them to add 1 (ONE) unique unit to each Empire faction in Bonerlord, just to make a little bit distinct
>South (Empress Rhagaea, I totally inherit the crown lol)
Keep the Cataphract, alternatively give them low ammo bow with good accuracy and damage, ditch the lance for that unit (persian variant used bows and maces in our world)
>West (Emperor Garios, the general dude)
Either light skirmisher unit on horse or make giga armored troop unit with limited pilum ammo
alternatively instead of infinite recruitment limit it to small number of units for them to act as designated captains
>North (Lucon Osticos, Senate is mighty! but we don't want to spend coin)
Foot skirmisher with load of javelins and fast speed, has a small shield that auto blocks when they are stationary and hurl javelins, cheap upkeep
Anonymous No.2143262 [Report]
>>2143250
Garios being the army man who is mad about the empire screwing over army men should have the legion of the betrayed on his side since that's literally what they're all about. At the very least he should have some kind of Praetorian unit that is stupidly OP but expensive and never seen in significant numbers. As for the north, maybe they could have a mercenary Varangian guard type thing with Sturgians or Nords that reflects how cutthroat the Senate is because they need personal security from foreigners who aren't involved in imperial politics, It'd fit them geographically as well, they could be axe throwers. South could have Cataphract mounted archers, Clibinari or maybe mounted crossbows.

I think the "EoE flavor pack" or "AD: Dark Ages" does the faction overhaul pretty well. The only issue I have, and its an issue with all Bannerlord armor replacers, is that there aren't any armor LODs, so they are just full detail all the time.
Honestly all I really want is Warband 2 with improvements from Viking Conquest and various mods. Diplomacy Litdum is close enough and I normally just end up playing that instead of Bannerlord.

It's not that there aren't any new mechanics I'd like to see, but it's a lot more important to flesh out, deepen and rebalance the existing mechanics. The game has a lot going on, but half of it is barely worth paying attention to because it's either too shallow or too low-impact.

The question enters the realm of semantics as soon as you start to try and figure out what really counts as a mechanic or what really counts as depth. I'd say some of the game mechanics need other mechanics to make them truly work like anything diplomacy related, whole others just need better implementation like recruiting and clan parties.

The better question i think would be, where to even begin? Like what should be the foundation for fixing Bannerlord?

The archived video hasn't been uploaded yet so I don't have a link for it yet, but we won yesterday's match and are one of the 8 teams in the final day and we'll play either 1 or 3 games today. /mbg/ plays in the quarterfinal at 17:00 UTC today at the same stream linked in this post >>2142582. If we win, we'll be in the first semifinal match at around 19:40, then either the 3rd place match at 21:00 or the final at 21:40 depending on the result of the semifinal.

On a related note, the /vst/ team has a roster thread open here >>2144515 if you guys have any feedback on the team and want to see players added or removed, or if you'd like to see medal players changed up.

The team finished 3rd with a decisive 3-0 game but the whole tournament run was far better than I had imagined it would have been. As fun as winning the /ag/ League, the winner is banned from all future iterations of the tournament so this means /mbg/ can compete again next year which I'll probably do (with a slight roster shuffle to change up medals and maybe freshen player models). I'll upload the files to the /m&b/ wiki page so they're available to everyone if anyone wants to enter them in another tournament, but I don't think I'll enter them in more than 1 or 2 tournaments a year so you won't hear about this for a while. Once the archived videos are up I'll post the links to today's games for those who want to see how this campaign went from the start.

True Noble Opinion does the same thing as the fix from the mod Nemesis. It separates the opinion of Regular Clan Members about you from the opinion of the Clan Leader. Normally your relationship witha lord would be one and the same with your relationship with their clan leader, like >>2142795 complains about. This makes it so that all lord in the same clan have their own individual relations stat.

True Relations simply gives you more changes for your relationship with certain NPCs to lower or rise.

I've thought about doing that to Vlandia to add some proto-Swadian domains in the north and proto-Rhodok domains in the south with minor variations in equipment for units recruited there. You could easily do the same for other non-empire factions (Persian, Arab, and North African flavors for the Aserai; Baltic, Russian, and Finnic flavor for the Sturgians; Iberian and Celtic flavor for the Battanians; Turkic, Persian, or Mongol flavor for the Khuzaits). It's little things like this that would help make the world feel more alive.

No. It's the exact opposite. Python is a high level abstracted language that's friendly to people with no knowledge. It's seen as a good tool for people who have no prior programming experience like scientists needing to write a program to work on their data.
It has its place for quick programs, prototypes, mockups, scripts, interfacing with another language with an API, etc.

It's funny that he's getting filtered, and from what I gathered it's not even c or cpp that bannerlord is using. It's c sharp, I don't know how the fuck you can't even figure out what language you're writing in. If he's struggling with C# he'd blow his brains out with C.

Complaining about the grammar when Python uses white space as syntax and a bunch of other silly shit like being dynamically typed. C was designed to be as as succinct as possible and explicit with what's going on. Sometimes that's to it's detriment, when someone writes code trying to be fancy.

To me it's an odd thing to complain about grammar with how historic and prolofic of a language C is, and the influence it's had on other languages. I haven't ever touched c#, so I can't really comment on that specifically, but it sounds like he just can't into computers and is making weak ass excuses.

>[valve tagged poster]: To explain further, we recently enabled a new compression algorithm which is vastly better-performing, and will enable faster downloads with much lower CPU load on clients. It will also improve unlock times for preloads for users on SSD (for spinning disks, the disk writes are the bottleneck). This was good just to save CPU load but it is also necessary for the faster (> 1Gbps) internet speeds people have in some places now, and it also really improves the experience on the Steam Deck.
>New content coming in to Steam is now being compressed with this algorithm; existing content will not be converted. So if you're on an old client version for any of the reasons discussed here, there will still be many games in the catalog you can download and play (so long as they are not being updated, or if you can pin them to a particular build using branches supplied by the developer). Unfortunately we can't support having the data in both formats for new content.

Surprisingly easy to mod the troops yourself btw which you wouldn't expect considering the completely overhauled troop recruitment system, which I ended up doing a lot and spending multiple days rebalancing the entire troop trees for the mod author.

Balanced of different qualities to showcase faction specialization. A state would not continue existing unless it was adaptable to a certain degree. Everyone would field infantry, cavalry and ranged infantry. But they would have martial traditions allowing them to excel in some niche.

>Diverse trees where there's many upgrade paths, or much more linear ones?
In warband I want a few branches early on and then linear, I don't want to be wondering wtf everything means when theres a million options. In bannerlord I can just look up the whole troop tree with one click so it doesnt matter much there. Some mods do go overboard with it though, "crossbow vs bow" is a reasonable branching option, "different types of javelin" is not and is just bloat.
>Should Factions have a balanced range of troops of different qualities to showcase faction specialization, or much more specialized troops and an overall lack of diversity to make them more unique?
I think they should generally have an option for everything but for the sake of uniqueness one option should be obviously better, and some can be objectively inferior to other faction troops in the same role.

I'm kind of in between on that - there should be some missing or subpar sections of each tree (eg Nords/Rhodoks not getting cav at all, or Khergits having very lackluster foot troops), but broadly speaking each faction should be able to fill the major roles without requiring mercs/other faction's troops.
>>What about number of troop trees themselves? Do you prefer the single troop tree per faction of Warband or the distinction between Noble and Regular troops from Bannerlord?
Single trees a la Warband. I can see what they were going for with Noble trees, but I prefer being able to raise troops organically rather than scouring the entire length and breadth of a kingdom to get exactly one (1) Noble troop.
>>What about adding even more troop trees beyond those to factions, or to recruitable units in Taverns?
Eh. Those tend to be too inconsistently available to really feel good to use. If they had dedicated outposts where they could be recruited outside of taverns, I'd be more OK with that.

>Do you prefer long troop trees with many upgrades or short ones with lesser ones?

Long enough that an army can be big and low tier, or small and high tier, and have contested battles anyway. My ideal is 7 tiers with the first 3 being low, 4 and 5 being well trained regular and 6 and 7 being elites.

>Diverse trees where there's many upgrade paths, or much more linear ones?

Linear at the start and branching at the middle, i want soldiers to either be specialist troops from the moment i recruit them or have the option to train my already existing mass of mid troops to adapt to a role according to what i need. If they split too early i have to keep them low tier, if they split too late those are too big of an investment to specialize. Besides, from an immersion point of view, getting recruits up to a certain skill level would be more of an universal basic training type of regime.

>Should Factions have a balanced range of troops of different qualities to showcase faction specialization, or much more specialized troops and an overall lack of diversity to make them more unique?

Balanced troops as regulars and militias with specialist branches for nobles and odd faction specific ones. Literally no faction should lack a basic bitch spear and shield footman.

>What about number of troop trees themselves? Do you prefer the single troop tree per faction of Warband or the distinction between Noble and Regular troops from Bannerlord?

More than two, no more than four. I think troop trees should never make having a kind of troop you REALLY need annoyingly difficult, i never liked how you need to find the villages that raise horses to get cavalry recruits. I'd rather the division be more of a reflection of a factions' social structure ie a peasant militia tree, a general soldier class and a noble tree.

>What about adding even more troop trees beyond those to factions, or to recruitable units in Taverns?

Should always have more of them but also minor factions.

My preference would be for plenty of loot gear drop, but for all of these loot to have Cracked/Ruined/Ragged modifiers to lower its value and strength.
Loot is also way too pricy, specially since most of the time you'll only find a single piece of equipment of the same time in a city, increasing its price.

many upgrades and many paths
>Should Factions have a balanced range of troops of different qualities to showcase faction specialization, or much more specialized troops and an overall lack of diversity to make them more unique?
factions should have a baseline unit of most types avalaible and extremely elite units for whatever they specialize in (crossbow faction does not need archers but their crossbows are far better than everyone else for example)
>What about number of troop trees themselves? Do you prefer the single troop tree per faction of Warband or the distinction between Noble and Regular troops from Bannerlord?
1 tree but the elite/noble side should have some prerequisites or large cost to upgrade into so you are incentivized to keep your peasants as lower tier meatshields but also dont have to do laps over the map to get 5 noble units
>What about adding even more troop trees beyond those to factions, or to recruitable units in Taverns?

Just make every pointless skill actually do something in the actual game instead of abstractions and dice rolls.

>scouting
Turn it into a general outdoors journeying skill. Have parts of the map be impassable without high enough scouting, like hills and forests or deep desert and tundra wastes. Higher scouting should reduce your food consumption and even allow you to forage the land for food so you can endure for long periods of time.

>tactics
The higher the tactics the larger the deployment area for your troops gets in pre battle. Unlock ability to queue orders on an RTS style ovethead map.

>roguery
Sneaking mostly solved this but it should also involve concealing your party in the field to ambush enemies, winning as a numerically inferior force by defeating them piece meal and stealing loot from them unnoticed. Hiding in forests and hills.

>leadership
Bickering from party members and companions that bring up issues according to their traits, culture or the overall morale that you need to solve. New events system might solve this.

>engineering
Now allows for battlefield engineering. Armies can, if they have enough materials like wood planks and tools, build things ranging from wooden stakes, barricades, ditches and small artillery pieces to full on forts in the field. They may also build things like bridges to cross rivers anywhere and repair looted villages.

>smithing
All weapons and armor gain a negative modifier from use over time unless you're periodically repairing them and maintaining them. Smithing is less about pumping out dogshit hatchets and daggers to grind until you can make a giant paddle with spikes to exploit the game physics and more about being frugal repairing and flipping shit loot at a profit and keeping your and your party's gear in good condition, even improving it for a range of bonuses.

Minor clans that dont have fiefs could have a small manor or homestead stuck between fiefs. Or they could own a single village thats slightly larger and acts more like a pseudo town.

>stealth system
I just don't see how this fixes roguery being useless. Or hideouts. Or prison breaks. You can now take 20x as long to kill the 15 guys in a hideout instead of rocking up with the same 10 T6 troops you'd have curbstompted it with, but only after you stealth killed some of them. All still to gain like +2 with town notables at the cost of losing a source of free influence and XP from crushing bandit parties in the one time of the game you wouldn't stabilize the map, early game.

Prison breaks have never been useful except when you could get nobles killed to no consequence in that patched "bug" and still won't be useful now that they're long stealth gauntlets. One war's worth of captive donation can max relations with an entire faction in an hour and a captive nobles 2nd cousin's wife will spawn the same army he would if you left him captive for the duration of combat.

It doesn't scale at all past roleplay tier and we all know that's a short lived playthrough. Nothing they've said or shown or has been mentioned about how it effects the still pointless alley mechanic either. And there is no assassin "lategame" involved in killing notables in towns, governor clan members, or enemy lords without the relation penalty. The whole thing seems like a fucking lot of work (for taleworlds, this is more animations and mechanics than combat itself) for something no one will do a second time. finally incorporating 20% of the diplomacy mod into the base game at least fixes glaring problems but there are a lot more core game loop things still unaddressed.
Anonymous No.2148818 [Report] >>2148825 >>2148843
>>2148812
it's more of a good framework for things that COULD be good gameplay. Assassinations are one thing but also night battles where you can sneak up on troops and kill them without alerting the whole army would be a huge game changer. Sneaking into towns and castles to avoid sieges by having someone just open the door for you would also add a big new approach to doing shit, or wiping out guards and sabotaging shit like siege engines.
Anonymous No.2148825 [Report]
>>2148818
Also
>sneak into besieged town and burn their food stocks to force a surrender
>sneak into army camp and burn their supolies, now all their horses are lame from no food, archers have half the ammo, infantry may be lower health
>sneak into caste and steal a lords' money and wealth just to be a bastard and humilliate them
Anonymous No.2148843 [Report]
>>2148818
the problem is all of that is worse and far less time efficient than what exists, a continuation of the same problem of the whole system. Why would you ever have like 300 roguery and play a 20 minute stealth sequence to make a field battle you still have to fight easier. Especially when time and skill allocation wise you'll be behind in leading the army all that is supposed to give an edge to. microing a T6 doomstack or pressing auto resolve on troops you're printing out of discard gear are two more conventional, far more powerful uses of a play session. Both which will be perfectly viable in the new naval combat system, which stealth can't do shit in.

It's not changing anything about the basic problem of a crimer bandit play system having no part of, or even it's own, late or even midgame. Youtubers showcasing it are backstabbing bandits at 0 roguery like altair so what good is investment into the system. If it did let you kill nobles how will it matter without a complete and total overhaul to npc behavior, spawn mechanics, and clan power. And how would it be balanceable if a player could just nuke prosperity and clans from perfect stealth; there are reasons they didn't add any of these interactions that the system could but can't ever be used for.
Anonymous No.2148852 [Report]
Adding new navigable landmass, a new faction, placing new settlements and a new troop tree is easy, as is adding new equipment models. Adding the Nords was dirt easy.

What Taleworlds is truly 'selling' is the 1.3.0 patch, which they justify working on my associating its release with the Warsails DLC.

It's a cunning strategy to increase profits and justify the time and money investment it took to work on the hard part, which is not the DLC itself but rather the 1.3.0 patch.

They will only work on "major" patches (that should've been in the game from the very beginning) if they're releasing such patches alongside a paid DLC.

I don't understand TW's obsession with 1:1 balance between the factions. There should be relationship bonuses between the Sturgians and the Nords, with a "Nord mercenary" system available exclusively to the Sturgians that lets them hire an army of Nords. Moderate cost. This army could not be used against Sturgians or Nords, unless it's hired by the faction leader against a rebellion.

The Empire should have a large number of smaller mercenary companies (i.e auxiliaries) it could hire from all the different cultures, at significant cost. Could definitely be used against other imperial factions.

The Vlandians should have their own mercenary companies that bring in significant income when hired out to other kingdoms, and can only be used against other Vlandians (i.e against the faction leader, or by the faction leader against a rebellion) if hired by Vlandians. They would be rather expensive.

The Battanians I imagine would only hire out their services as a faction, as mercenaries, if they themselves were not at war, considering their precarious situation. They'd be relatively inexpensive.

The Khuzaits would be available for hire regardless of their situation, and would be relatively inexpensive.

The Aserai I don't know, what do you guys think?

These are just some thoughts off my head, without much heed for balance. But rather just to spice up the game.

Daggers blocking shouldnt be a thing. Chambering yes. Parrying perhaps. But you simply dont have enough surface to even catch most strikes, i dislike how the size of hitboxes gets completely ignored for blocking, shields are magnetic too. If Taleworlds were to steal any mod and put it in the game, it should be Unblockable trusts.

It is wild how well polearms play with RBM and unblockable polearms in 1.12. Pikemen, pikemen with shoulder shields, and basic shieldwall spearmen suddenly are actually the backbone of armies they are supposed to be. As much seethe as the poise block break causes in player melee what it does in a line battle is actually let spears poke guys, which actually works when the AI doesn't blob shield to shield where neither side can do anything but hit each other with 50 length maces like the absolute state of basegame combat.

As much as I want to test out 1.13 I've seen the ai improvements and it just isn't there. rbm, unblockable thrusts, mylittlewarband, and the battle camera mod all have been in states of depreciation for years but you can work around the crashes, abandoning them for slightly aimed spear bracing and even more hesitant cavalry is a hard sell.
Anonymous No.2149586 [Report]

at the very least, RTS Camera and RBM are very likely to get updated for 1.3, i don't know if the unblockable thrust guy is that active but its not the most complex mod ever so SOMEONE might redo it or update it themselves later.

my favorite thing about spears in RBM is that they very, very often push someone back on impact even if they do minuscule damage, it relfects how you instinctively don't just stick yourself on a sharp end like a fucking wild boar and you can effectively keep people away with a spear even if they're fairly well armored. It's a big stick and it's got leverage and weight, it can't just be "batted away" like how idiots think it works.

I'm curious as to how all these mods and changes will work with a hellenistic mod that has full retard Sarissa length pikes braced. I don't think any of those like Eagle Rising have been updated in a while.

5 seconds ago I thought they had some broken trade good like noble mounts but no, it's literally just the game being stupid. They make food and have 0 of every other resource so they have double the population so double the prosperity of every single other settlement that doesn't have 4 villages all making low cost food items. Being everythingcucked might also generate stupid tariff revenue off traders too. Truly a well thought out economy system with no simulation issues at all.

>Players instantly gain both opposing perks when Skill level reaches them.

>Perks are leveled up by doing relevant actions (A One-Handed Blunt Weapon Perk is leveled up when using Blunt One-Handed weapons).
