>Final Fantasy VII: Long time love and changing perspectives... spoilers ahead for OG, Crisis Core, Remake, and Rebirth. I've been thinking a lot lately, or rather for a long time now, about FF7. I'll be completely honest. My very first introduction to FF7 wasn't any of the games, but rather an amv. youtu.be/DPlGKwuVZQA?si=2KAt… I was really young, but I remember seeing Tifa and thinking that she was such a beautiful character. I was familiar with FF10, but this was my first intro to FF7. It didn't get me to play the games yet, as I didn't have the game system that it ran on. My next intro was from somebody else who really, really loved FF7. Their passion made me excited, so that's when I first really decided I wanted to know more, and when I first saw Aerith. I was simply reading about the game - plot, characters, spoilers, etc. but I was incredibly caught off-guard by this lovely flower girl. Hearing her theme for the first time touched my heart from how sweet the composition was, and that alone told me so much about her character. Even without playing the game, she had this sort of energy that pulled me into her. It was then I knew I needed to play this game, so I experienced more of her. Sadly, at the time, it didn't occur to me that it could be on Steam, so I stuck to supplementary content and watched the movie, "Advent Children." This movie, as well as my lack of deep understanding regarding the characters, as well as my friends' perspectives and opinions, led to me taking a lot of things at face value. From this, the "canon" ships were solidified in my head, AerithxZack and CloudxTifa. However, the shipping aspect didn't matter so much to me as Aerith herself. It was after FF7 Remake was announced that I realized I really, really needed to try to play the OG game before it released. So, I started the original FF7 as it was released on the Switch. I'll be honest, I had no clue what was going on with materia or how to build teams (the story was always what I was interested in) so I got completely stuck during the elevator and Rufus fights. I didn't create enough saves, so I couldn't roll it back. I figured, for now, it's fine because I'd pretty much finished Midgar and believed I was ready to jump into Remake. I didn't have a PS system yet, but I didn't wanna wait till June to play it on Steam, so I did the next best thing: watching the cutscene cut. I was already completely in love with Aerith at this point, and hearing her themes mew arrangement, seeing her in high res, hearing her voice, and getting to fall in love with her was such an emotional experience for me. It was also great because I was able to get the story without needing to worry about my gaming skills, lol. I was so enthralled that I'd continue my watchthrough every free moment until I finally finished it. I left feeling ecstatic for part 2. Though I was surprised to see online that people were upset that it wasn't a one-to-one remake. Admittedly, I felt that way too before it released, but once I got the STORY, I was sold
>After this, I decided to go backward and play the Crisis Core Steam re-release. I love Aerith (obviously), and having the image in my head that her and Zack are canon, I played it with that in mind. Crisis Core played myself, and I completely fell in love with Zack as a character as well. I understand why some fans dislike Crisis Core, and I can agree that some of the repeated plot points made me roll my eyes a bit, but I'll touch on my full feelings there a bit later. Getting to see more of Aerith and how much they both cared for each other, it was extremely hard not to fall further for the idea of Zerith. Zack wasn't a perfect character, nor a perfect boyfriend, but the part that sold it for me was their heartmelting, genuine bond, and then finally, Zack final thoughts during the DMW breakdown... it was all Aerith. This is something Aerith would never know, but in those final moments, I couldn't help but sob - I was genuinely so heartbroken. No matter what happens and despite the fact it will never be canon, I can't help but want to imagine a future where Zack did win that fight, made it back to Midgar, apologized, and they had a future together... This transitions into me completing playing OG FF7. I found out the Switch has a thing where you can autoplay the fights, so I did that to save myself the trauma of Rufus and the rest (lol), though I started back from the beginning instead of picking up where I left off. There's a lot, of course, but this was one of the best game experiences of my life in terms of story. Even 20+ years after the game was released, it's still excellent and emotionally evocative. This got me even more excited for Rebirth.

>Rebirth is the game that really flipped everything on its head for me. Playing OG, I already knew Aerith's fate, and no matter how terrible it is, I couldn't change it. But Rebirth really made me feel like something was different this time around. Things would be different this time around... I started noticing things I saw seeds of in Remake (which I completely rewatched before Rebirth's release) that I thought my should heart was just misinterpreting - specifically between Cloud and Aerith. I think I was blind to them before because I was so set on "these are the canon ships, so they are endgame" that I didn't ponder too long on certain moments, but seeing them all at this point... I started to feel so taken with the clear, blossoming romance between Aerith and Cloud. It's a slow burn, but these are two characters who have been through some terrible shit, both taking care of each other. When it got to Aerith's gondola date, I genuinely felt so touched. Aerith has just acknowledged that Cloud is not all himself, but she wants to find the real him, and they share a sweet moment together. It's neither too much (had they kissed, it would've felt off-putting with the truth of the things Aerith said), nor too little as they still fully embraced eachothers presence and company. It's hard to describe, but the moment was oozing with the same romance they'd had building up the entire game. All the build-up, but this moment, especially upon many, many rewatches and reanalysis, has made me think I was wrong about what I thought was canon. I started rewatching things Advent Children and reassessing them from this lense, and it just makes *sense.* The story and grief and certain themes are so much clearer now that I feel so strange for having been influenced by certain factors that I didn't see it until it was right infront of my face. I said I come back to it, but I also enjoyed that a lot of things in Aerith and Cloud's romance were similar to Aerith and Zack, BECAUSE to me, Aerith really did love Zack and waited for him longer than she ever needed to. When she met Cloud, she effectively met someone who is similar to Zack in many ways, but still felt herself falling in love with the parts of him that were different, and wanted to find the real him. Though she could see her first love in his eyes, she didn't want him for it or take advantage of it. When it comes to Tifa, she's such a great character, but if I'm being honest, theres multiple points where I've really disliked her characterization in Remake compared to OG, I felt it was much improved in Rebirth though. Her jealousy and such were really amplified, and as a girl with insecurity, I can totally get it. But I was off-put when Aerith was kidnapped, and Tifa at first was okay with leaving her to Shinra, until Cloud was clear they NEEDED to save her. I also started to notice that, while there still for sure were many romantic moments between Cloud and Tifa, there was always a lot of uncertainty behind them, taking away from the romantic aspect for me. They both felt like people who were romanticizing someone other than who was in front of them or the idea of them. For these reasons, while I still think they're cute and have great potential, I think I'll need to see how they correct the issues in Part 3 before I can really get behind the pairing again. As for Aerith and Tifa, I think they have an incredibly rich friendship as the game develops, and I love seeing how they're willing to show up for each other when the other really needs them. Before I knew about Aerith, I really loved Tifa, so I'm excited for the next part of the story that'll show us more of her thoughts and perspective.
