When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, β€˜I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.

Proposed Order for Combating the Seven Deadly Sins
β€’ Pride ( Lucifer / Selfish light bringer )
β€’ Why First?: Pride is widely regarded as the root of all sin (Proverbs 16:18: β€œPride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”). It’s the elevation of self above God and others, fostering other sins like envy or greed. Combating pride first humbles the heart, making it easier to address subsequent sins with sincerity (James 4:6: β€œGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”).
β€’ Fasting Strategy: Practice humility through service, gratitude, and confession (Philippians 2:3). For example, serve others anonymously or reflect daily on God’s greatness.
β€’ Why It Helps: Overcoming pride opens the heart to God’s grace, weakening the self-centeredness that fuels other sins.
β€’ Hubris leads to Nemesis.
β€’ Love your neighbor as yourself.

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, β€œIf you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

and they will lift you up in their hands,

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2β€œSo when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,4so that your giving may be in secret. Sloth (Baal-Peor / Belphegor )
Why Second? Sloth, as spiritual or physical apathy, hinders active pursuit of virtue (Romans 12:11: β€œDo not be slothful in zeal”). Addressing sloth early builds discipline, which is essential for tackling other sins. If one remains idle, efforts to fast from lust or wrath may lack follow-through.
Fasting Strategy: Counter sloth with diligence, like daily prayer, exercise, or completing delayed tasks (Colossians 3:23). For example, commit to 10 minutes of Scripture reading daily.
Why It Helps: Discipline from overcoming sloth provides the energy and commitment needed for subsequent battles.

Through laziness, the rafters sag;
because of idle hands, the house leaks.

Virtue to Cultivate:
Diligence / work
(Romans 12:11: β€œDo not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord”).

Above all else, guard your heart with all diligence, for everything you do flows from it.

Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth

Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father

we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do

I believe it was Saint Paisios who said that you shouldn't listen to your thoughts when they tell you you're a saint nor when they say you're deplorable. I believe the best way to remain humble is to stop thinking about yourself and when you catch yourself judging remembering that you likely have done way worse. Maybe you even would have turned out worse if you grew up in the same circumstances.
In any case, if something feels like it's impeding your growth, ask for it in prayer and talk to your spiritual father. Accept that the Lord might not give you immediately what you want but know that if you prayed with faith in Him that one day you will get what you need.

The problems with demonic attacks is that they are stronger than you. The devil has had thousands of years to learn how to most effectively deceive people, he knows exactly what the smallest reactions mean and how to interpret them. So what can you do? You get help from the One who is stronger than all of the demons combined. Instead of trying to fight them on your own, turn towards prayer and ask our Lord if He can help you instead. That's why in the Orthodox church we always try to keep the Jesus prayer on our lips. The specifics should definitely be discussed with your spiritual father as he knows you way better than I ever will.

Why Third?: Greed, the disordered desire for material things, often stems from pride’s self-focus and sloth’s failure to trust God’s provision (Luke 12:15). Addressing it after pride and sloth shifts focus to contentment and generosity, which weaken other desires like envy or gluttony.

Fasting Strategy: Give generously, simplify possessions, or fast from non-essential purchases (1 Timothy 6:6–10). For example, donate to a charity weekly.

Why It Helps: Letting go of materialism frees resources and attention for spiritual growth and relationships.

I think maybe what he means is that bad habits develop for a reason, and you can't juat quit them cold turkey. You have to figure out what need they fulfill, and fulfill that need in a productive way. I use "bad habit" as a way to convey this in a secular way, but these are not just bad habits. These are bad habits that might seem innocuous, but ultimately lead us to death in some way.

His point is that we allow demonic possession in our lives and that the exorcist has to see why we do that and how to work against that. So for example if you're extremely gluttonous he won't ask you to diet but instead will try to find out with you why you feel the need to overeat, drink etc. and remove that reason with your help. He did word it poorly though.

The unsaved are literally incapable of understanding the Bible. That's why everyone with a works-based salvation can't properly interpret anything, because they're not saved and don't have the Spirit of God in them (and why they take verses about discipleship or profiting others and apply them to salvation). See >>5913748

>St. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
>I. Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

It's also pride, they're full of themselves and think they're smarter than they actually are (which is also why many people quit reading the Bible the moment they come to a difficult passage they don't immediately understand). The pride of man is also why all of the false religions in the world with works-based salvation appeal to man so much since it appeals to their pride and self-righteousness. Most people think they're good, but Jesus said there's none good but God. Jesus also called everyone who was listening to him during the sermon on the mount "evil".

>Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

James 2:10 shows the folly of your attempts anyway. Romans 4 shows we're not justified before God by works. James is talking about justification before man. See >>5909297
>James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
That's why James talks about Abraham being justified by works (before men, but not before God).
>James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
>Rom 4:2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
It's crystal clear.

Or remain ignorant and full of pride/self-righteousness, thinking your filthy rags can purchase the gift of God.
>Acts 8:20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
>Isa 64:6a But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; ...
That's like a spit in God's face what you're doing, but you don't care because you're just a self-righteous Pharisee taking stuff out of context to glory in your flesh like those in Matthew 7:21-23 who were boasting of their "many wonderful works" who Jesus never knew. See >>5909288 and >>5909290
>Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
>I. Cor 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
But you just ignore all of the verses I post anyway because "muh james 2" taken out of context to think your works have anything at all to do with salvation. You clearly didn't even watch the video I told you to watch and I'm sure you'll remain deliberately ignorant, I shouldn't need to explain these things over and over and over especially when it's already shown and proven by the Bible.

St. Luke 18:9-14
9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

I mentioned the whole book of James. What more am I supposed to do? Do you want me to say 'passus Bible'?
>were boasting of their "many wonderful works" who Jesus never knew
What's the problem here, the works or the boasting? We both know it's the boasting otherwise the Pharisee would have unjustified before he even entered the temple in which case Christ wouldn't have needed to tell us his prayer and how it was so different from the publican's prayer.

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, β€œWhy do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: β€˜The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

I currently feel in a bad spiritual condition but I'm really uncertain of what to do about it. I feel like I'm in a dark place with sins and demons weighing on me. It's a feeling that I would describe as like, that if the veil were removed by death and it was just my disembodied soul, it would be dark and full of torment, which may be Hell itself. I feel like a coward and like I need to make a courageous move for my salvation that I haven't made but I feels very worrysome for some reason. I feel burried and in a very bad way. I don't know what to do, but I fear if nothing is done I will be crushed and that's a terrible thing. I've been in sin for so long I don't know what to do. If I go to a Church, particularly and Orthodox Chruch (that's the church I've had my eyes on and sounds like it best adresses all spiritual problems) I worry I am such a twisted freak, spiritually defiled to the point of being disturbing in truth, were it illustrated, I almost feel like I'd die from it. I don't know if these thoughts are retarded or not, but I know I'm terrible and it weighs on me. The anxiety I think even manifests itself from time to time in nightmares I have.

I could be overthinking this, and maybe missinterpretting feelings, but I know what it's like to have had weight lifted off and I feel like whatever this is could be lifted off. It just feels daunting and scary.

>I worry I am such a twisted freak, spiritually defiled to the point of being disturbing in truth, were it illustrated, I almost feel like I'd die from it
I know a member of the church who was most certainly worse than you. He actively engaged in witchcraft before he came to the church. He was so deep in it, he could control people merely by talking to them. He abused that to take advantage of young women in the most defiling ways possible. Anyone with an inkling of spiritual understanding would have been disgusted by his mere presence. Now he's a highly respected member of the Orthodox church and gives speeches regularly. He got this far only by actively going to church and repenting.
If you are in doubt remember the church is hospital for the sick since Christ came for those who need help.
>I don't know if these thoughts are retarded or not, but I know I'm terrible and it weighs on me.
We all are terrible but this thought comes directly from Satan. Whenever we sin he takes advantage of it immediately. He tells us about how despicable we are, unable to be saved even if Christ came down in the flesh and pulled us out of the pit of sin. This is complete nonsense! Do you think you're worse than Paul who actively participating and facilitated the martyring of the Protomartyr Steven? Do you think you're worse than pagan priests who lead people to believe their handmade idols could control their whole lives?
There are times in which Satan will lead us to dark places but every single time we have the opportunity to escape those places just like Anthony the Great could endure the torment by the demons. If he tries to attack you, pray the jesus prayer, pray for intercessions, read the Bible or the lives of the saints, think about how nice it will be to meet your parish members next week.
Do you want to know how strong praying is? Many saints saw and told us that if we pray it's like we are spewing fire in the eyes of the demons. Just a few prayers destroy demons.

Yeah, you're right. I've just missused myself to a great degree, in in ways that are simply embarrassing and just seem inexcusable, yet I've allowed myself despite the knowledge none of it is good to be immersed in it for a long time, which I feel is very bad in it's own way. It may not have been an abuse of others, but I think the abuse of myself, and the very temple through which I move about in the world is a terrible thing. Nevertheless, I know I shouldn't despair. I think the moments of painful self reflection I have are really blessings from God, an I think it's shown me the meaning of "Keep they mind in Hell, and despair not."

Still I feel there are great steps I should take in the spiritual life which I haven't. I hope I come to have the clarity and sobriety to begin seeing it purely and simply, and know what I need to do. That I've awaken each day, to see a new day, I think shows that, however terrible I am, God is indeed merciful and forgiving, so why should I despair?

Thanks.
