They're smith machines. The bar is attached to a rail and has a hook attached to it, so you simply rotate the bar to rack/unrack.

Smith machines can only move straight up and down (or at a slight angle, depending on the machine), so they are theoretically "safer" than regular barbells, but IME you can fuck up just as easily, especially doing leg work. You're much better off sticking to a regular barbell.

smith machines are alright, espescially if you train alone or if you are a beginner. Most accidents happen when you try to show off. Normally you have holes in the guide-rails so you can stick a bar in them, thus preventing the whole loaded bar to come crushing down completly. But than again, if you are stupid enough to overload, you might not be smart enough to lock the bar
