DS hardware
Which version of the Nintendo DS is the most ideal for playing DS games?

I used to have a DS Lite, but it broke.
I've tried a friend's original DS ("DS Phat"), and I found the lighting too weak for my liking.
I currently have a New 3DS XL, but I don't like playing DS games on it. I don't like how the games look when they're upscaled by default, and I don't like how tiny they look when played by regular scale.

Would a DSi XL be the optimal choice?
>actual DS hardware (not a 3DS pretending to be a DS)
>no GBA cartridge slot, but I no longer have any GBA games I want to play
>have a bunch of legitimate DS games I want to play
>might possibly consider piracy in the future (whether than be custom firmware or an R4 cartridge if that's still a thing)

base dsi or dsi xl depending on how big you want
base dsi has bigger and nicer screens than the lite
and you can get custom firmware for it easily by just putting a few files on the sd card and then play games from it
ds lite is fine though too if you like the aesthetic more but the original ds has terrible dark screens

if it's just for ds games then 2ds is by far the best

Hello based fellow DS enjoyer. Nice trips.
Given your requirements there is no reason not to go with a DSi series. It's just a question of whether you want bigger screens or sharper picture. I personally have one of each; I find some games I like more on the big screens, but I enjoy others for their sharper picture and easier pocket fit. They are not as cheap as a few years ago, but cheap enough you can get them without much hardship.

One thing to look out for when getting an i series is screen discoloration. Some, especially JP models in my experience, get yellowing discoloration over time that becomes rather dramatic. I recommend checking screens very carefully or seeing a unit in person. US sold units (which I see more often than JP units) I find tend to be a little better.

I will also say, in my experience, if you are playing a game that sits sideways (ie. Hotel Dusk or Puzzle League), in my experience the XL has better off-angle viewing for that specific situation. My non-XL has some color issues if I tilt the unit even a little bit (when it's sideways). No problems when it is normally held, but figured I would let you know.

not OP but seriously, who would put up with the bullshit falseflagging nonsense you have to do in order to get a /v/ thread to get any replies and then hope someone bothers to answer the question?

oh and piracy is easy to set up on DSi, but you can also buy R4s that are even preloaded. My friend just bought one preloaded with roms for a dozen different systems, directly off of amazon comically enough. You can also install CFW on a DSi and launch almost any .nds game straight from the SD card. I have found a lot of antipiracy problems when trying to run pokemon games this way, however.
