When you think about it memory is most of conscious experience. But when you experience ego death after taking some mushrooms you become awareness. There is no longer any memory. You just are. You're pure unfiltered conscious experience. Memory clouds the way we take in the world. Ego death reveals the intricacies of the world unhindered by memory.

Ego death achieved with anything other then your own will is a fake veil. Its like saying "I am a different person thanks to alcohol", its not wrong but its cheating. You aren't growing or learning, you aren't controlling your own ego just silencing it with an external tool. You can still have memories but not have them create prejudice and judgement, that's true ego mastery.
In other words you didn't beat the game.
