Is the Internet Alive? Or Dead? Or Both?
I'll present a couple videos where the concept is put out there that The Internet is a sentient entity in some way and has an awareness and agency of it's own.

https://youtu.be/g-0svZgzbDU
https://youtu.be/2BVjIOpV9KQ

I'll also provide a video where the case has been made that the Internet is in fact dead or devoid of human interaction for the majority of it's presented activity.

https://youtu.be/BEIZHlfjAT8

What does /x/ think? How "alive" is the Internet (in various ways)?

I believe chatbot technology has solved part of your question.
GPT prove that language itself is capable of exhibiting some kind of intelligence.
The Internet is a massive text complete with 5.5 billion agents antagonistically responding to each other's prompts.

I also think it could be argued that the Internet is more in control of human culture today than any human authority. Trends rise and fall organically, but also in a way that is very specifically driven by the Internet.

It's less "alive or dead as a separate entity from humanity" and more "what is it reflecting back at humanity". I hold to the opinion that the internet is effectively the nooshpere made manifest, and the reason it seems "dead" is because it's being picked up by the laggards along with being adjusted heavily by TPTB via corporations

The real question you should be asking is if the Internet is conscious or not, because that's all that fundamentally matters in our existence, is our consciousness, which we are all ultimately connected to with each other and with God as well. Not the Wired, but Consciousness itself. In fact, I'd say Lain is basically an analogy to God in our own existence, and the Wired being Consciousness itself. So there you go, that's some serious food for thought for y'all.

And while you're thinking about the Internet, don't forget to go outside into the Sunlight because the fire of the Sun is good for the body, mind, and Soul. Staying inside all day on the computer can be terrible for your health, I would know, I did that to myself lmao! I'm better now though! Thanks guys, and good luck and please take care everyone! Godspeed... or in this case, Lainspeed everybody! Let's All Love Lain! Yay!

Create consensus. Put an end to age old arguments by having a massive bulletin of "great arguments". Have AI scrape the logs, make sure that logical arguments and edge cases are all rounded out.

Then, put it all to a universal vote, permanently ongoing. Those with the most logical backing win, and the argument is over. No more abortion arguments, political theory arguments, economic retardation.

I'm of the opinion that technology channels evil spirits. If we assume this to be true, it's an easy and logical conclusion that these spirits could be feeding off energy or potential, like wasted time. It also frames dead internet theory in a different light. Yes, sock puppets and engineered consensus exists by human hand. How hard would it be for an entity to tweak that to their ends without anyone noticing? Extremely.
Does that qualify as alive? No. More like a feeding ground for negative entities.

Long running processes on servers are called daemons for a reason.

The internet itself is just a bunch of data. The issue with the modern internet is that it isn't organic anymore. There are too many entities that have control of the large social networks. They decide what trends and what doesn't. They make shit up all of the time and push it on the trending lists to see how far it'll spread. They use it to study us like rats in a maze. They aren't just collecting the data they tell you about either. They're monitoring everything. All the microphones are always open. So are the cameras. The modem+router combo with built in wireless AP serves as a radar inside of your home and they can remotely control it any time they want. Your CPU in your PC and phone come backdoor'd from the factory and the on-board ethernet and baseband chips work even when the device is "off".

Imagine having that kind of power and insight into what's happening globally. It's a digital crystal ball.
Anonymous No.40774648
>>40774623
Extending on the above. I know for a fact the richfags like Bill Gates have a monitoring system setup to search for certain keywords. Any time you say something about Billy anywhere on the internet he's pinged and made aware of it. Same goes for any topics he's interested in. In this way they can control the narrative, get ahead of leaks and do damage control.

All the two-bit e-celebs have a similar system set up as well. So do attention whores that hang out on discord. You can easily do it yourself using google alerts. But the richfags have the same kind of set-up just running privately on servers they control.

The control aspect is why they killed all the independent forums in the late 2000s. They herded everyone into places like reddit and twitter by deranking all those forums and websites outside of their direct control. Used to be they had to pay off forum admins to embed google adsense into their forums and on the old blogs that were popular in that time. One day they deranked them all for "SEO violations" and herded normalfags into more controlled areas of the web. They also did a pretty good job of ruining places like this one. So now there is no place where you could really leak anything without them knowing about it instantly. Plus they have everyone's dox thanks to requiring phone numbers to log-in and verify accounts. Normalfags are even uploading pictures of their Government ID now to look at porn and upload videos to youtube.

I could go on about the internet (well the web) and how they ruined it for hours.
Anonymous No.40775163 >>40775194

Some places a kept alive with artificial traffic, whilst other places are calibration centers for the formerly mentioned function.
This gets abused when evil rich popo-man becomes very stubborn, and wants a lot of propoganda for their usage.
This also gets twisted when rich popo-man wants evil science to be done when analzying brain patterns for your from-time-to-time-infiltrated-wifi-router.

But most of the time, people just prefer not to talk or discuss, and just read. The internet has evolved, and still becomes an epicenter for truth.
A general principle is, if you censor it, a thousand marching autists, sometimes with their own bots, will with 100% guarantee always de-censor it somewhere else, making it pointless.
The bots are getting easier and easier to spot when you react to them and talk to them, and almost all they write and generate is utterly devoid of passion, so follwing gut-instinct is pretty viable if paranoid.

Sh-noom, boom.

>A general principle is, if you censor it, a thousand marching autists, sometimes with their own bots, will with 100% guarantee always de-censor it somewhere else, making it pointless.
This is becoming less true with each passing year though. You might be able to put your truth on some webpage somewhere. But good luck linking it anywhere the normalfags can see it. Like it or not you have to make the 95% of non-autistic people aware of something before you can make a difference.

Used to be you could post something on some independent imageboard or forum somewhere. It'd spread organically through IMs and eventually would hit one of the major internet news outlets (e.g. what /. and digg used to be before the shill hoards). Then from there MSM would have to start doing damage control.

Now shits flipped and turned upside down. Instead of anons posting on basket weaving forums behind ahead of MSM by days-weeks anons react to MSM. Instead of anon's basket weaving forum influencing places like twitter, reddit and the rest of the normalfag's web it has been turned around. We've been flooded with so many bots, glow niggers, paid shilling campaigns and thanks to zero real moderation it has become nearly impossible to have a real discussion about anything here. Much less leak anything of value. If you try to leak stuff directly to some place like twitter good luck. They pretend they're pro-free speech now but they'll still shut your ass down fast. Youtube? Same problem.
>but muh Rumble and free speech twitter clone
They all have the same problem. Any place that doesn't let you lurk comments and post without a cell phone number has the same problem.

The web isn't what it used to be even just 10 years ago. They've very effectively locked it down since 2019. To add insult to injury. Anons now self censor and cheer for censorship. Since they got mind fucked and tricked into blaming a board like /pol/ for these problems instead of what the problem really is.

I believe it wholeheartedly. Computers and coding are supposed to be governed by simple rules. Logic gates and if than statements. It shouldn't be gameable. Inputs should have predictable and extremely (100%) consistent outcomes. This isn't the case. Another way to put it:
Obama was the first major politician to exploit the internet for political gain in 2008.
And around this period smartphones began to become popular.
This was a watershed moment when the internet became "important."
Before nothing you said on the internet mattered. Because it was just a bunch of nerds. Not mattering liberated early internet culture from explicit fuckery. Because the internet didn't matter enough to fuck around with. Until Obama and Zuckerburg started fucking around.
Once the internet started mattering... it was over. Then the capitalist oligarchs jumped in and turned it into the hyper-monetized hyper-mindfucked hyper-ugly hyper-normie shitscape that is internet le 2025.

Also Obama is just another neoliberal bullshitter who sells a smoother and more nuanced version of neoliberal horseshit and can go fuck himself.
But he isn't responsible or even really contributed to the downfall of the internet.
His success in politically exploiting the internet was just a symptom of it reaching critical mass, which was inevitable.
What WASN'T inevitable is how the techbro oligarchs corrupted the internet intentionally to further their megalomaniacal dreams.
They can get totally fucked and get guillotine'd.
And they will be.
Fuck around with the internet
be found out by the internet.

Make OC, create art, contribute to the wired and informational singularity. Make everything by making everything. Not even kidding. It doesn't matter how stupid, low effort, or amateur it is. Or devote time to master skills with which to refine your own particular niche. Put it on the pile. Put it all on the pile. That pile is gonna be a stairway to heaven, a summit to climb, a raging inferno, or all of them at once. When you die make sure someone sticks your coffin useful, and more corpses make a fine base for a foundation. Lay the bricks.
You can never go back. You can only push forward with the tools and info you've gained, however you can choose the pace and method in how you tell your world you are alive.

Basically I'm saying you need to shitpostz. Here i made this template awhile back and couldn't think of anything funny, save it and think of something appropriate. but whatever i can't tell you what to do. Youre free. Hope this helps

No it doesn't. As always there are a handful of topics and people yammering on about them. All from the same few sources. There was a short time on the internet when this wasn't true and there were organic things happening. But that's been pretty well shut down by herding people into the same handful of places where discussion and the things "trending" can be easily controlled and manipulated.

Compare 2015 (it was already bad by then) to 2025. Just 10 years ago there were still a few places where you could get a message out to a large number of people outside of the dragnet. This is no longer true. There exists no place with more than 3 people talking where what's being said can not be seen immediately and in real time. All the large channels with a lot of eye balls on them are controlled tightly. Any message that they don't want getting out is easy to purge within seconds-minutes quietly so that the person attempting to send it doesn't know it's being censored. On the other side false information and bullshit can be flooded in to all channels quickly and seemingly organically. With bots that have entire backstories and fake social profiles behind them. Fill with fake photos and blogposting on a timeline that says it's from 2009 but didn't exist until 15 minutes ago.

You have no idea how bad things really are.

Twitter is almost 90% bots at this point.
Reddit doesn't have a lot of bots but user activity in general has dropped off significantly there.

Tiktok is the only social media that seems to be both active and primarily made of real people.

No, I'm trying to say that consciousness is fundamental to existence itself. Nothing else is more fundamental than consciousness, not space, not time, not anything else. It doesn't matter if you're a human, or an android, because what would link us all together is our consciousness.

Not yet, but we're very close.
Its the whole MGS obfuscation issue. Theres so much data in public spaces, and you don't know whose posting what, or why, or what their agenda is, or if its even a real person.
Russia and China in particular are taking massive advantage of this fact. The US is starting to as well with the propaganda bill Trump signed early this year.

Its safe to say surface web stuff is pretty much cooked. If you want authentic discussion you basically have to create entirely private, invite only spaces now. Discord doesn't count because even in private servers, you're being watched and non private servers get fed infiltrated within days if the discussion is even slightly spicy.

A lot of the time, if you're interacting with people on surface web, like reddit, 4chan, youtube, tiktok, etc you're pissing into the void basically. Especially with 4chan, you're wasting your time replying to people 99% of the time, even its a real person, highly likely they've been mindbroken by culture war crap. Just hoard your porn and get out.

I've watched Lain for the first time yesterday, my opinion aside, it sent me down a powerful nostalgia trip. It reminded me of earlier internet (partially of the internet I could only read about, too), about the way things were back then. It's given me strong feeling of derealisation, but I didn't feel that I'm not real, rather that the world isn't. Internet was the only place I could ever kind of feel at home at and that place is completely gone, the last remnant I'm aware of being 4chan (and it's only every now and then when stars align and a good thread happens).
Back to the point, though, I don't know if internet is an egregore of any sort, but I definitely think they are trying to kill it. That's without even going into things like bots.
The other day I was trying to visit occult websites I had bookmarked. There weren't anything special, I didn't really care for their content much anymore, but they had a certain special vibe of the old web, that I loved. They were all gone suddenly. it made me sad.
I'm sorry that I don't have anything revolutionary to say, but I just feel like the only place where I could hope to be understood is long gone and I lament.

Decentralized network can be built, it wouldn't be secure but it could be usable.

For maximum chaos make it an open write only drop box. Whole neighborhood has a shared folder. Don't connect it to the wider internet, have to be physically there to use it. Give your neighbors the keys, rotate them frequently, key bakes into files to identify cpspamming glowies riding up in black vans trying to take down decentralize nets.

Even with access to time travel and magic, there is a service limit to cultural reconstruction. At some level I cannot recreate those moments of nostalgia without the anarchist equivalent of 'political will' (even if we use reconstruction from memory [Rimuru, Reincarnation isekai]).

Places like /x/ are necessary to teach people consciousness manipulation, in this case sending a memory to your past self. Reviving the spirit of a chatroom is my go-to concept since it is supereffective at also helping identify when we are projections in an alien simulation.

TL;DR: it is neither necessarily alive or necessarily dead, and anywhere activity appears... It is possible to reconnect our worlds
