I also think it could be argued that the Internet is more in control of human culture today than any human authority. Trends rise and fall organically, but also in a way that is very specifically driven by the Internet.

It's less "alive or dead as a separate entity from humanity" and more "what is it reflecting back at humanity". I'm of the opinion that technology channels evil spirits. If we assume this to be true, it's an easy and logical conclusion that these spirits could be feeding off energy or potential, like wasted time. The internet itself is just a bunch of data. The issue with the modern internet is that it isn't organic anymore. There are too many entities that have control of the large social networks. They decide what trends and what doesn't. They make shit up all of the time and push it on the trending lists to see how far it'll spread. They use it to study us like rats in a maze. They aren't just collecting the data they tell you about either. They're monitoring everything. All the microphones are always open. So are the cameras. The modem+router combo with built in wireless AP serves as a radar inside of your home and they can remotely control it any time they want. Your CPU in your PC and phone come backdoor'd from the factory and the on-board ethernet and baseband chips work even when the device is "off".

Imagine having that kind of power and insight into what's happening globally. It's a digital crystal ball.

Compare 2015 (it was already bad by then) to 2025. Just 10 years ago there were still a few places where you could get a message out to a large number of people outside of the dragnet. I've watched Lain for the first time yesterday, my opinion aside, it sent me down a powerful nostalgia trip. It reminded me of earlier internet (partially of the internet I could only read about, too), about the way things were back then. It's given me strong feeling of derealisation, but I didn't feel that I'm not real, rather that the world isn't.
