those checker patterns, its more like black and white. what they mean is that the tendril is not gray, and it isn't colored. the pattern represents the partitioning operations at the base of the universe. those are, more or less, the living "pixels" of the universe.
recall that in the beginning, the first division happened, creating a 2 regions, one of light and dark. that is the semiotic structure of the origin story of as many religions as we can find.
the second division created a 2x2 pattern consisting of 2 light regions, and 2 dark regions. as this process continued, the continued process of orthogonal division along axes, creating checker patterns, volumetric cube patterns, linear dash mark patterns, etc...
as the creator begin to apply deformations to that pattern, it emerged eventually such that particles could form, energy could transmist in waves, magnetism could exist, and so on.
not all of the total pattern is in the deformed and living state. some of the pattern is still under active control of the creator. in your image, demiurge is getting snuk up on by it.
fitting, considering demiurge attempts to imitate a single tendril of the infinite depth and breadth of the pattern, knowing nothing of the creator controlling it.
in our place, where we live, it is a tiny part of the total pattern being used, bent into shape of this universe with matter, energy, time, etc...
beetlejuice was a bit of a controlled release towards all of this. the film was a fun flick, but as always, there are deep deliberate esoteric and semiotic messages in the beetlejuice flicks.
