do you have control over your empathy? can you feel the cogs turning in your head everytime you feel it or does it come naturally to you? being hungry is different from understanding what your body needs, and what your body needs may be something you don't even want to eat at all.
both things can coexist tho, i never said non npcs are all unfeeling psychopaths, i just don't like the glorification of empathy as this ultimate human virtue when it's an instinct like any other, which many animals have.

npcs having simple inbuilt feelings, on a massive escale, is easier than manually "coding" every interaction to appear as if they do
