In the grip strength study from pic related there was a stronger correlation with ethnicity than per capita GDP. Note that the average South Asian male's grip strength is closer to that of females of any ethnic origin than it is to European, Latin American. Persian, or Chinese males. They're drawing from a very small athletic talent pool despite having a very large population and only so many of these athletes are going to specialize in any given fighting sport. I would expect the situation to improve only slightly as more Indians are raised abroad.

It's mostly due to diet. Indians raised in the West can grow pretty tall. They did perfom decently in wrestling in the past.
