>It is up to taste really. Do you remember the Gifted versus the youtuber who defended the Mike Mo league? Tony commented under the youtuber (it wasn't Dumb Data, it was someone else, can't remember, black dude) saying something along the lines of "yeah man, I totally get you, contests are good" etc. And he also keeps a bit of the bias of the day, I think it is due to nostalgia.
I missed that I try avoid yt drama stuff.
From what I have known and even in that interview, that era of surfing was looked down upon by the public and I think comps gave some legitimacy to the sport. I guess they see it as the same today. But i think some of the bronzed aussies today are looked down on similar to that guy with the yt channel, a bit full of themselves. Apparently they were fucking wankers in the water getting in fights up and down the Aus coast.

Well, they were trying to set up a pro surf league (which eventually they did, they are the founders and owners of WSL/ASP) without asking anybody else and without taking in consideration hawaiian surf customs. They really viewed it as a sport and they sportified it.

But surfing and skateboarding aren't sports. They are games to be enjoyed and experienced.

If i hold a railing or a fence or sum i can actually land with both feet pretty much on the bolts, but as soon i as i try for real shit just doesn't work.

I was there already but the algarve when I was a kid. Bought a board with all my money (nicest board I’d ever had at the time element decks and wheels, independent trucks) and my friend just bought a deck to bring home because he couldn’t afford the rest. Skated this weird spot with homemade ramps and school lockers near our hotel for a while then a bunch of older local kids came through and started kind of fucking with us in a friendly way. Ended up playing a game of skate with one of the older kids where my new board was bet against the older kids trucks and wheels. Won by the grace of god, dude gave my friend his trucks and wheels and we hung out with those boys for the day skating and drinking

This was painful to read because I'm exactly there as well. In my case, I just don't have the ability to keep track of the board and know when it's safe to put my feet back on it. I landed one once and it felt perfect, but it was complete luck and I couldn't find the feeling again.

sounds pretty typical, I think you need to learn to float with/above your board. practice some kickflips where your only goal is to land your feet after the board. also hippy jumps where you get comfy landing softly on your board.
you might be doing weird flips but you should still be able to stick a couple once you get the float.

I started taking skating seriously and deciding to get good around the time I was obsessed with watching Cyrus Bennet footage. So I subconsciously started imitating his upright style and it fucked my shit up for about a year.

I started doing it without yet learning / understanding proper fundamentals (knees-to-chest motion, pop timing and pressure, etc), so I wasn't landing shit. I had to re-learn all my tricks and now suddenly I'm way way better. It's frustrating how much time was wasted.

Anyone else imitate other skaters and it causes problems? I used to have the same problem in little league by imitating MLB player stances and swings...

What is there to explain? That's been going on forever, in any sport or hobby that isn't lame. Girls find it attractive / masculine to skate so they make friends with the local skaters because it's fun.

Yeah they're not skating themselves because they don't know their potential, and it sounds like your park doesn't have any girl-skater regulars that they can see first hand (to inspire them).

If anything, how about you go talk to one and ask? And maybe even gives some tips and be friendly while you're at it
Anonymous No.237131
>>237029

Yes, I started at 27 because of a new WFH job and living 2 blocks from the skatepark. After 1.5 years, and treating it like the gym (going 3-4 times a week, 1-2 hour sessions), I got clean kickflips on lock, front 5050s, proper high and clean pop shuvs and front shoves, exaggerated decked out rock and rolls on 5 ft tranny, decent manuals, and a few basic tricks in there.

I skate fast af and prefer learning tricks FAST and CLEAN, so I don't "move on" from tricks until they're proper (hence my small bag of tricks). I also wasted a lot of time having fucked up weight distribution on my pop for like, a year, so if anything I should be much better.

My advice is to take your health seriously and start eating better. Then, learn ollies properly instead of just brute forcing it like little kids do. They have infinite energy, you don't.

Time is going to pass anyway. If you treat it like going to the gym for a year or 2, you're going to be flying around the park and actually skating it properly. Maybe not massive kickflips everywhere but you'll be olling gaps and banks and shit.

I'm 29 now and I can't believe I thought 27 was too late. Scientifically, 27 is your peak physical fitness level.

Just don't immediately start dressing in in 100% logo skate clothes 247, or massive polar big boy jeans. Gives high schooler vibes. Keep it simple

100% I took my 33 yr old fren who never skated (did surf) from barely rolling to bombing around the park (not many tricks). He prefers a weird shape 80's board but what ever, he now skates transition better than me a couple years later. My advice is do what ever makes you want to skate, if you get sick of something or stuck do something else. There is so much to explore and you'll probably find your niche. Also watch Mitchie Brusco.

I'm very thankful to the older guy at the DIY (at a place that is now cursed grounds on which a crossfit gym has been built) who took pity on my board -nearly old enough to tie its shoes by itself- and gave me his old board which just had a little chip off the nose and still fresh pop, that summer of 2005 I landed stuff that I wouldn't do again until 15 years later. I've never even tried to kickflip down a 5 again since that era. Scabs all over. Stealing candy at the shop. Hopping fences. All sorts of bad boy stuff.
Sure, give your old board if you have one around that's still decent.

8.5/thunders/55mm 92A OJ's (go 78a if you will be cruising 80% of the time, go 95a if you want to lean into tricks more eventually). I have a similar 'cruiser setup' with 60mm 78a OJ's and they handle rough ground really well. This is assuming you want a traditional popsicle shape. Some other anon can advise if you want actual cruiser board faggotry.

Buy everything normal except buy cruiser wheels (something like 90a or below).

Then when you grow out of your little girl mentality and decide to learn how to ollie and grind shit like a man, you only need to buy regular wheels before you throw away the old ones.

Get independent trucks (144)
8.25 board (most common, most designs, can't go wrong)
Cruiser wheels (pink or bubble gum blue, to match the energy)
Bones reds bearings
Whatever griptape
Whatever hardware (not allen, get phillips).

Then when you replace your wheels, get formula 4s, 99a or 101a

this is for snowboarding but the stuff on stance width still roughly applies, you can just use a ruler on the ground to see what actually feels comfortable for you. actually ollieing isnt too hard with any board just as long as you have a good tail. as for trucks, i really like aces for cruising

Understand you're not supposed to strain yourself. A kickflip should be lightwork when done right.

What worked for me was
1. Covering my front two bolts. MOST people set up way too far back.
2. Focusing extra on lifting my front knee into my chest (with proper timing, DELAYED timing, you want to feel pressure and release as you start to pop.
3. Popping at a slight angle behind you (in the direction of travel).
4. STAYING "wide stanced" while lifting my legs and crouching in the air (like a ball). That's what it feels like.

Focusing on these things means you're not just wildly flicking wherever inconsistently. If you do all the PREP properly, and have your weight distribution, timing, and pressure understood, the flick just happens. You don't even think about it, and doing the proper set up doesn't even let you flick wildly to begin with.

I’m having a weird problem. I finally got the balls to drop in and slipped backwards the first time. Whatever. I’ve tried it about 20 more times and have ridden it all the way out to the bottom but every time I make it to the flat I either fall forwards, or I slam the tail down and fall. I actually rode it out to the other end of the ramp about 2-3 times but it was sketchy as hell with death wobbles.

I had similar problems before learning to no slam at the bottom of a bank when it transitions back to flat, but at least with banks the ride is long enough for me to properly anticipate and adjust to the transition. On a 3’ mini ramp it takes less than a second to reach the bottom so I don’t really have time to think about what I’m doing so I’m not really sure how to improve. Any tips? It’s not really something I hear people talk about when it comes to riding ramps, all the emphasis is on the drop itself. I really want to get it soon, 20+ full on slams in 2 days sucks, even in full pads

You're no balanced over your board, you have the speed, you need to stay parallel to the board and transition you're riding, directly over the center of gravity.
You don't really have the concept of the center of balance, so you just send it all the way forward and pray it's good enough, so you lean way too far.
Also you need to be light on your feet, lifting them higher when you aproach any sort of an angle, yes even when you go down a tranny you need to lift the weight of your feet off the board.
It's hard to explain and get a feel for until you get it yourself.

Mitchie brusco has a tonne of stuff. Go watch it. Two tips from memory would be where you are looking, try to be looking at the transition at the bottom when you start your drop in, then lift your head and look ahead once going through transition. Seems beginners stare at their feet or something, which doesn't give their brain the visual information it needs to make the adjustments (like dropping in blindfolded). Second is once over the coping its a slow drop of the hips more than tipping forward. Like you're going down, not out from the ramp. Then keep your hips low all the way through. The further they are from the ramp the more you need to stretch (and end in that tippy toe position reaching for your board) So hips go down not out.. if that makes sense.

Also you need to squat lower the higher the angle you're going down from.
I recently got drunk enough to finally stop being a bitch and drop in from the QP with a huge extension in my local park. That shit is basically vertical as soon as you drop in for half of the QP and the feeling of the drop in is completely different from a regular quarterpipe where it starts to angle immediately and kinda helps you with balance on your front foot. I basically had to FS grab the board instinctively because i'm so low on the board.
Think about it like this, the closer you're to the board the easier it is to keep balance when you're vertical, practice just riding around transitions in your park fully squatted over the board.
Also do not grab the board on a regular QP, it will fuck up your balance because it's too short for that.
Also "staying light on your feet" is basically pumping, the point of pumping is to lift your feet just enough to basically be where they should be ON an angle before you hit an angle up/down. This is not only to help your speed but also will help you balance on the board because you take way less impact and have to do less microadjustments.

also a good low impact thing you can do to build up to drop ins is find a 6-8 foot ramp or bowl and just practice pumping up the wall and doing nose & tail taps below coping. riding a bigger ramp from the bottom-up will give you much more time to actually see what's going on and develop good form

Isn’t 5k/month considered an elite skater salary? Pretty sure Jaws has to work for his old man because he makes jack shit as a pro for example. I noticed when watching king of the road all of their accommodations are paid for but the skaters seem to get one good pub meal every now and again but mostly have to live off gas station rollers and cheap beer kek.

Anonymous No.237945 >>237949

turning is mostly due to the bushing shape, get two barrels and it will be really tight, two cones and it will feel loose/turny regardless of how you tighen them

the thing you look for in trucks is the weight and shape mostly.
I personally find ventures kinda frustrating becuase when you put them on - the holes for the screws are in this awkward position, it's just uncomfortable.
Indies are easier to put on in my experience.

Then again how often you change your boards? If it's once in a season then whatever, if you change them once a month it makes sense to buy something that's easier to disassemble.

Other than that all trucks are the same i think. All companies today have these hollow models as well as the regular ones. I don't think that weight matters all that much, the adaptation period is like a few days and then you skate normally.

Which is interesting to think about in terms of skateboarding. Outcast and antisocial hobby like that should be a breeding ground for trannies, yet it's the opposite.
My theory is it's a combination of sense of belonging to a group (which is a main driving factor of trannyfication), blatant hate of homo shit in the (pre-zoomer) skating community over the history and exercise producing high testosterone in the body (of those that actually skate, i'm not talking about pear shaped brocolli hair zoomer xisters).

there are tons of trans skaters. there's at least a few tranners in esg. slap is filled with trannys. i don't have numbers, but i think skating is closer to a breeding ground for trans than the opposite.
>blatant hate of homo shit in the (pre-zoomer) skating community
i had the exact opposite experience skating in the 2000s - 2010s. many of us were fags and we dressed like fags. i think homophobia was more the norm in general back then. there were certainly older dicks, whether they skated or not, started shit because we looked gay. in general though most people left us the fuck alone. i dont think your experience is reflective of the entire scene back then

You have the drop-ins, so you don't have to worry about it. Now try to reach coping, by beginning from the flats and pumping your way up. Up, down, up, down, forwards, backwards, forwards, backwards. Build those legs.

You can see from my fail video that I used to have steel toes bridging the gap between the end of the ramp and the concrete flat. I did that because I foolishly believed ChatGPT when it told me I couldn’t just lay Masonite flat on the floor of the concrete and call it a flat. It insisted that if I was going to have a Masonite flat, I’d have to frame it out and have the flat be supported by 2x4 ribs and plywood like the ramps are. It recommended building the toe out of 1/4” steel, and said the bump it would create would be negligible and I’d never even feel it. As Maury would say, that was a lie.

I unfucked it by building a little 5 rung staircase from the ground to the edge of the ramp out of some el cheapo 1/4” osb plywood I had lying around, adding a step every time the Masonite rose 1/4”. I cut all the steps out, glued them with wood glue, and just set them in place. They aren’t attached to anything, they’re just sitting under the edge of the ramp. The sheets of Masonite that bridge the gap between the bottom of the ramp and the floor are only screwed to the ramp, the rest just lays on the osb and the concrete. I had a scrap sheet of Masonite that was about 2x8 or so, and it is set in the center of the flat, not actually attached to anything. I snugged the two ramps against each other which holds the flat bottom in place.

Kinda sucks in hindsight, the pressed steel for the toe wasn’t cheap, and I had to take it to a machine shop to get a slight kink in it, and I meticulously buffed a pretty swirly pattern into the metal and drilled and countersunk all the holes to the exact depth of my screw heads for a super flush finish. Great execution if I do say so myself, just wasted on a shit idea.
