WE ARE SO BACK

Hoshoryu losing the yusho after that disgraceful henka is perfectly fine for me.
A shame Waka lost his ozeki chance but he'll get another nex tyear i bet.
Aonishiki is cruising for the most consistent ozeki of all time.

Kotoshoho was disgraceful. Yusho hangover whatever sure but not fucking 12 losses

All around great basho. Glad both Yokozuna had a strong showing. Although some of Hoshoryu's wins were a little disappointing. However, I am a henka hater, so I have strong feelings there. Wakatakakage and Kirishima... Whatever happened there? I wonder if they will save one of them from falling too far, or if they will give Komusubi to Hakuoho. He's earned it.

Meanwhile, Hosh himself has negative records against:
Atamifuji
Chiyoshoma (!!!)
Ichiyamamoto
Oho
Takayasu (and it's not even close!),
among other rikishi who's unlikely to match against him ever again.
Shitton of almost-equal records with rikishi way below his rank.

I understand. I recommend picking up a book on it. "The Way of Salt" by Ash Warren has a bit of personal touch and tries to explain customs to westerners in an easy to understand way. It's not comprehensive and it's full of his personal opinions. That said, it has a lot of good information. Another I recommend is "The Perfect Guide To Sumo" in japanese and english by Katsuharu Ito, translated by David Shapiro. It's very direct and informational and covers things I haven't found in a lot of other places, especially historic connections and differences. I would recommend 'the perfect guide' first, way of salt if you're still hungry after.

The point where your "road to rank X" stops being about you is Ozeki. You can get all the way up there on nothing but 11-4s, as a certain man is likely to demonstrate. But that last step is entirely dependent on whether or not you can be better than everyone else, twice in a row.
Anonymous No.243701 >>243705

>I'm not very familiar with how the ranking system works
Sumo is divided into six divisions. The top two, makuuchi and juryo, are the only ones where wrestlers get a regular salary. "Maegashira" is any rank-and-file member of the top division. The guys at the very top are collectively called "sanyaku." Komusubi is the lowest sanyaku rank and easiest to get; if you get winning scores every tournament then you'll eventually make komusubi, even if it's only 8-7. It doesn't matter how many komusubi there are, someone at M1e who finishes 8-7 will get an extra komusubi spot. Sekiwake is when it starts getting a bit harder: there's a minimum of two spots so if someone drops out then someone lower will get promoted to take their place, but if there's already two or more sekiwake then a komusubi needs 11+ wins to force an extra sekiwake spot.

Ozeki is the most complicated. Someone needs to already be sekiwake and a record of "high success" over the past three tournaments. 33 wins over three tournaments is a typical rule of thumb, but it also depends on the quality of their competition, quality of their sumo, and whether or not the rankings committee likes them. Once you're ozeki, you need to win the title twice in a row to make yokozuna, or have one win and one "equivalent" runner-up. What's considered "equivalent" is likewise vague, but regardless it means you need to be at minimum the second-best guy in the tournament with a strong record.

In a combat sport, it’s a lot. Otherwise there would be a lot more yokozunas.
For nearly all of these guys, they are beaten to a pulp by the end of a tournament and they are able to ease off the gas a little for the next one. If you’re going for Yokozuna, you have to dive right back in at the highest degree.
Moreover, since you’re an ozeki, your 15 matches will literally be the hardest possible schedule. You don’t get to Smurf against the lower maegashitters.

>Do the big wigs behind sumo take advantage of this to promote sumo wrestlers they want to "push"?
Sort of. They tend to be more lenient to the senior, well-established guys over the new up-and-comers.
Conspiracy theorists will claim that some wrestlers are held down unfairly due to collusion by the elders, but it usually just comes down to seniority like everything else is in Japan.

Specific is fine if it's something with a good chance of happening imo. I just don't consider an Oho kinboshi likely enough to warrant a spot. I'd say it needs an over 50% chance of happening at LEAST, and preferably way higher. Remember, in normal bingo every number WILL come out eventually. Like how Asakoryu has been so henka happy lately that it's probably a safe bet I can put henka (Asakoryu) on there. Also since I intend for there to be more options for boxes than 24 you can keep generating bingo boards until you get one you like.

I also like the idea of putting in attempts at rare kimarite as opposed to winning via them. Last time the bingo had tsuridashi but afaik despite a couple of attempts no one pulled it off. We could say the same about uchimuso too since I believe Dan only did it to Atamin and that match ended in a torinaoshi.

No the entire thing is retarded. It's not Kisenosato's fault if someone else commits crime. What, should he be personally combing the finances of everyone associated with his stable? Hakuho was put under higher management because he attempted to lie to and mislead higher authorities in order to save face for himself and cover up the problems at his stable which were partially the result of his own negligence and absenteeism. He wouldn't have suffered so badly if he had behaved in a trustworthy manner.
Kisenosato does not engage in similar underhanded behavior and alerted the bosses as to what was going on as soon as he found out about it himself.
Foreigners who screech "muh racism" every time they're not allowed to flaunt authority is one of the best arguments for keeping foreigners out of sumo altogether.

Now that I think about it, a loss to Juryo isn't a gimme since we don't have a guaranteed injury so might not even get Juryo guys fighting up in the first place, and M1 makekoshi is sort of lame since it could come so late in the basho.

Roga is such an odd case. Before September he's had four 7-8s in Makuuchi, and only been demoted once off them. Going off Spiffy's instant banzuke video he's going to survive demotion on 7-8 AGAIN. I wouldn't say he's guaranteed a makekoshi, but "Roga Isn't Demoted" is something I'd put on the list if I wanted it to run that long. Sadly KK/MK just takes too long to confirm desu. Ideally this stuff will happen day 10 at latest.
>Tamawashi beats a sanyaku
Likely landing at Hiradoumi's current spot, where he started facing Sanyaku day 6. This works.
>Abi wins by henka 2+ times
Nope. He didn't henka once last month so the odds of him winning twice are basically zero. I already have him getting a single flowchart win on there anyway.
>Oho beats a 'zuna
Too slim imo. Him losing to both would be a decent addition, but it took until way too late in the basho for S1w to face both Zunas last time.

Its a shame Keisho pussied out and quit so young. He should've done the take six months off to recover his health and drop into makushita or sandanme then make a big comeback. 28 is way too young to give up at unless you have a permanently crippling injury thats going to prevent you from competing and Keisho had nothing like that. Yokozuna being allowed to sit out and nurse their injuries instead of exacerbating them and dropping down the banzuke anyway is a huge deal. Teru would never have hit 10 yusho if he had to fight every basho because his injuries would've ended his career much sooner. Even if we Ozeki him and say he has to fight every other basho, his injuries still would've retired him before 10.

A Kirishitma who roped and could sit out without losing rank would probably be on 4-5 yusho right now.

Also what the fuck there was an Ozeki called Ouchiyama; sounds like he was constantly injured.

If a rikishi is cut down by injuries then it just means they're failing at one of the core pillars of sumo, which is strength of the body. Part of being a rikishi of such high status is the responsibility to build up and train ones body to achieve success in a manner that does not lead to injury. This is why Kirishima was a below average ozeki.
The same criticism can be applied to Takakeisho but the difference is he was at least able to win 3 yusho as an ozeki (4 total) before his body failed.

At the end of the day, who got it, got it and that's it. That said, not all injuries are preventable nor recoverable, especially depending on a rikishi's build. It's just dense to consider every injury a personal failure of the wrestler. Sometimes bad luck ruins everything.

As you know, promotion standards in ozumo aren't exactly consistent, so you will find plenty of underwhleming yokozuna and the occasional ozeki who shoots above his rank. That's a large part od why people come up with these "what could've been" scenarios every now and then. They'd rather believe their favorite got shit luck rather than that he just didn't have it in him and it's rarely obvious which of the two is true.

Making sekiwake twice without ever making komusubi in their career happened with 3 wrestlers. The record is also 3 set by Chiyonoyama back in 1947, 1948, and 1949. He's also the most recent, so this seems to be something less likely ever since they went to the 6 basho, 15 days schedule.
