Usually OPs last for one cour before changing it up. There are cases where it doesnt, but those are fewer and further between. Most animes want to have more variety and to keep things fresh. Furthermore, the OP will often include characters and hints at upcoming scenes of that cour, so if a character doesn't appear in the next one, or in the next season, it would be weird to still show them and not show different characters. In frieren's case, none of the new exam mages were in OP one, despite them being a big part of their cour. A new intro was needed to represent them properly. Notably, BD is a book on funerary rites. The kanji for this is ´葬送´ (sousou). Frieren is not set in Egypt. However, the passage of time is a common theme of the work.

Therefore, when Frieren searches for grimoires in a tomb or "dungeon", it's as if funerary rites are being performed twice or thrice over.

Thus, the anime is cleverly called "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End".

Narratively it took my first DnD campaign 17 years (2.5 actual) to fulfill its goal of assassinating our setting's tyrannical Emperor. Acquiring allies, establishing favors, and building a powerbase to be able to accomplish an incredible feat like that was time-consuming, and costly. In-setting, the best example of how Frieren and the gang get sidetracked on their journey to Aureole is how Stark gets wrapped up in the noble's Soiree as his late son's body double. Firstly, the party is hurting for funding needed for basic supplies let alone anything extra they might want, and the reward was substantial. Secondly, the actual event proper was quite some time away, necessary for the last point: Stark needed some training to properly fulfill the role he was assuming.
