They were the villains but for an entirely different reason. If we remember SC arc, it was pretty clear that the criminal system in SC was trash. There was a very large classism issue for people and it was very feudal. A lot of people very obviously went to become soul reapers to stop being broke not because they necessarily loved the idea of it.

Originally you could tell kubo was going in the direction of "soul society bad" but dropped that idea after the Aizen twist and any of the commentary or possible world building got forgotten. The problem with the OP anime is the direction. The tendency to stretch every page out to its absolute limit has been there for a long time, and post-Wano there's a huge overuse of effects. Look at something like Garp's Galaxy Impact which was a single double spread in the manga resulting a simple explosion, but stretched out to a full minute in the anime with flashing lights up the ass. Some of the Wano fights were even worse when they added random lasers to melee attacks, like when Yamato was clashing with Kaido.

The problem is that Kubo, and especially Narita in the novels, wants us to care about the politics and all the ""darkness"" surrounding Soul Society, but it's all half-assed. There's little point in making the good guys morally grey if you're not gonna delve more deeply on it. Especially like another anon said with how comically evil the Sternritter are, this war feels one-sided morally, regardless of Yhwach's complex goals that aren't supposed to be purely evil, but this isn't emphasized enough.

Espadas, Fullbringers, Sternritters - each one of them is a bunch of retards with varying levels of retardation, no mutual interests and in fact nothing in common except their race. Yeah, that's how Kubo wrote it. Yhwach was an absolute jackass but he was precisely the karma Soul Society deserved. They have paid for their sins in almost their entirety. The only sinners left are the ones necessary for the balance of worlds; ie Ichibei and the Royal Guard. Yhwach got his just desserts too.
