finally watched it. that was a lot better than i thought it would be. the music was great it's so cozy and fit the rural setting, the atmosphere was on point, and the animation was expressive enough for me to enjoy it though some parts still look janky. i don't know how to feel with them changing some things around and introducing all the casts and foreshadows this early, i guess that's a good thing so that some reveals doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere? i also like the VAs for the two i think it fits the characters well

I've said it before but this anime will most likely only adapt the best parts of the manga so that anyone who tries to read ahead or if they ever adopt a second season will just end up reading shit.
I think a lot of people don't realize the fact that most people are dismissive about this manga is because it had such a clear point of decline where you could tell the mangaka didn't give a shit about the manga anymore and just decided to fucking go full force into ending it as soon as possible. Most people I know dropped it around chapter 45 ish or so.
I think people would be a little less hostile to the manga if it actually kept up it's good quality despite the author Rick conning any of the bl. It’s neat so far. I’m going to need to see more from all the characters before I can make any judgements. I didn’t think that alien hunters and a village ritual gone wrong be a part of this and so early on. I assumed it that it would just be mc dealing with his an alien replacing friend his friend and just dealing with that alone until things escalate, but this could be a fine direction too, that there’s already a lot going on beforehand, and Hikaru probably being one of the villagers that was in on it. I definitely want to see the next episode sooner than later.

Also, part of what killed any chance of that story turning out well is that the director (Keiichiro Kawaguchi) didn't really see Higurashi a serious character drama, but more an exaggerated comedic story, where you push the horror, gore and overall situation so much to the absurd it becomes funny to the audience (he compared what he was trying to do with Gou/Sotsu to 80s b movies in an interview).

Ryukishi07 did give them bad ideas too, but they went along with it, and their additions were often stupid too since they had that distorted view from the top of production.

I'm pretty happy with the first episode. I think my favourite moment was when Rie sensed them riding past on their bikes, great sound design and direction there. It feels like a confident production taking some creative swings but knowing where to restrain itself. Hope it keeps up the quality.

Fantastic first episode, my goodness. The direction and production values in this were incredible, sasuga Cygames. I'm pretty blind when it comes to this series despite having the manga on my radar and I'm pretty glad, I had no idea what to expect and I came out incredibly surprised. That was a great first episode. I'm interested in whatever secret these adults are keeping that has them afraid of Nounuki-sama, I liked all of the emotional manipulation the fake Hikaru was doing to Yoshiki, the monster and situation are suitably scary. The scene where Yoshiki was crying in his room alone hiding that he's grieving for a seemingly still there Hikaru while his parents fought in the background was my favourite.

Stories about actual gay experiences aren't even labeled BL because fujoshi aren't into that kind of story. The author didn't want the BL label because it would've made new readers think the story was going to be not grounded in reality and just another female author slamming two male OCs together with a horror backdrop. Now yuri doesn't have the same "baggage" that the BL tag since the genre isn't an exact inverse of BL with 99% men writing yuri for men, instead around 60~75% of yuri authors are female and the audience split is about 50% men and 50% women depending on the publication. So if Hikaru and Yoshiki were both girls the author probably wouldn't have had any issue slapping a yuri tag on it but since they're both boys, she doesn't want her work to be seen with a tag signifying something super catered towards fujoshi. This decision and her using "queer", which is a very "woke" term by Japanese standards, may have alienated some of her initial Japanese readerbase but the anime may bring in enough new viewers that it won't even matter.
