This doesn't happen in reality.
What happens is you get a literal Ottoman harem situation where the most powerful men gatekeep the women and then castrate the potential competition to make sure they don't cheat on them.

There have been several circumstances where this has been a thing in the past.
A matriarchal society tends to be actually patriarchal with humans, like it was with Great Britain with it's "queens" that did nothing but be a figurehead. The only exception I can think of is Minoa and that ended up turning into a cult of sacrifice or something that lead to it's own downfall.
