Really? I prefer this to just completely erasing the old characters in spite of keeping the series name. Heck, Idolmaster Cinderella Girls had the OG Idolmaster characters reduced to ACTUAL background characters who never get lines or any role. Then you have Pretty Cure which actually does what you're saying, completely erase the old cast after their season ends outside of special crossover movies. I think that ends up feeling much more cynical and corporate.

S2 is intetesting because it throws you into the story knowing you understand the universe now and doesn't need to focus on a complete newcomer. That's just the nature of any gacha/pick your waifu or husbando franchise. That's why I generally dislike them. Even with Uma Musume I can respect the amount of work that goes into each horse girl given they're based off real race horses, but if you actually give a shit about specific characters they'll get one season at most of the limelight before they cycle in the next girl. It's easily the most profitable model to generate actual profits which sucks since it can lead to some of the worst writing decisions. I've seen too many series turn to shit to due selling out as a gacha and introducing cast bloat, see Madoka Magica (the production team spent more than a decade on a gacha sidequest), Yuuki Yuuna (they ruined the third season by shoving in all the LN characters to please the gachafags), and Revue Starlight (they started focusing on extra content for the other schools that only fringe diehard fans care about).

Haven't watched precure but I think the opposite. Still having the umas of irl dead/retired horses just wasting away in the background feels like a corporate cashgrab meant to hold on to their fans. I wouldn't even classify Precure as a gacha-type franchise, it's just a toyetic franchise like Yugioh or Digimon that brings in a new cast every season for the next set of toddlers to latch onto for a year or so. Gacha franchises are those that start with a large cast and continue growing it so that there will be at least one archetype that a person playing the game can latch onto. As the cast grows the original "main characters" will sit around in the background with nothing to do and generally only that first or second group of characters were the breakout stories that brought the biggest audience in the first place. So by a few years in gachas are already "abandoning" their main audience by focusing on new characters with stories that are less compelling but supported by paypigs and whales of those specific characters since they can't milk as much from the earlier characters. It leads to a decay of the franchise every time until the franchise finally pulls the plug or they do a hard reset.

Season 1 is the most soulless season. It's simply a pure gacha ad. The very premise of Suzuka continuing her career in America instead of going through the fatal injury is basically promoting career aspect of the game. It's there to sell you the "alternative path" -- the one you can build. And then to cap it all off, they have a grand race where horses from multiple generations come together and race off. A pure fanservice slop scenario. Which is honestly okay, because that's what the game is all about. But it's not an intriguing story to say the least.
Season 2 turns the "dream" of it all over but cleverly retains the hopeful side by adapting a true story, having Teio go through her(his) career ending injury yet win the Arima Kinen despite the handicap, something that actually happened in real life and dubbed 奇跡の復活 (miraculous revival) Teio never managed to run like that afterwards just like she admits herself in the show but god damn if it wasn't a performance of sheer will and this ended up being the season that made the game popular.
And then season 3 finally introduces the concept of "hitting your peak" to represent the end of the real life horses 3-to-5 years old Classics runs. The harsh reality of uma musume's measly small time careers are finally put into spotlight. Meaning your times in the big leagues are over, so you get sent to the retirement league. Obviously real horses don't have that but "retirement league" is not a foreign concept in the field of sports, most well known examples being Messi in Miami or Ronaldo in Saudis. Sure the writing of season 3 was subpar, but it had so much more emotional maturity than season 1 with its worldbuilding that I have to commend it.

S3 is worse than S1 purely on an execution standpoint. It failed at even making us care about Kitasan's journey. S1 might have the more generic and soulless plotline but it at least hit the story beats in a way that makes you care when Suzuka breaks her leg and Special Week triumphs in the end.
