Well first I will preface this by saying that PSG and NPSG are the kind of projects that you can’t really assess the whole by one episode, the whole point is that episode to episode it looks a little different, it’s a playful/visually experimental show.
I absolutely adore the aesthetic of PSG, it’s probably my favorite thing about it. I love when individual animators and episode directors get to influence how the show looks to this degree, I particularly like more abstract “cartoony” art, they had excellent taste in influences with McCracken’s UPA look with a dash of Zim and anime all blended to one. Among the many things that makes PSG a pleasure to look at for me, is its willingness to be flexible and loose with its artstyle, how off model they’re willing to go cut to cut, there’s a median look for the characters but there’s multiple variations of how detailed or chibi/abstract they can get. My comment was merely meant to express that episode one kept that element fairly tame, the characters felt more conventionally concrete, which is normally what most animated productions go for, but I missed a bit of the playfulness, even sloppiness if you want to call it that. Episode 2 definitely trended in the right direction for me on that front, but my autism over this is not completely satisfied yet. FLCL is another such show and to a lesser extent Golden Boy. If I’m unclear, ask and I’ll try to clarify what I mean.
