And nothing more I think. In terms of writing it's pretty mediocre, it's better in the first half where Askeladd is the leader. The farm arc it's overrated but the Ketil family, Snake and Einar made it worth it.

I always disliked Thorfinn. In the first part he was the typical edgy character, then he changed to a living corpse and finally to a guy who thinks he have the moral highground after all the shit he has done. Also I don't wanna start with his stupid kung fu moves. The only good thing about Thorfinn is his sister.

I think everyone really likes Vinland Saga for Askeladd and his philosophical lessons. He was evil, but he new the nature of man, and he knew who he was without trying to hide it.

The morally correct character of the series for most of it. Realizes that conquering savages and monsters is the only way to bring the world forward, with his flaws of pushing it to far or incorrectly. I think the series did a good job of displaying how a leader should actually think.

Some decent moral lessons from Farmland Saga, especially the Young Master realizing there was more to life.

I think the first half of Vinland is extremely enjoyable for different reasons and anyone could like it depending on those reasons you want to gravitate towards. The second half of Vinland is a mixed bag of extreme highs and absolute abysmal lows.

Overall, I give The first half of Vinland about an 8/10. I give the second half a 4/10.

Farmland doesn't have an individual character as compelling as Askeladd but because everything is ultimately smaller scaled, Thorfinn isn't incredibly aggravating to sit through when the context lets him 'work' on a 1 on 1 scale with people he knows individually or has some history with. During farmland a reader or viewer can still understand where the characters are coming from when they do what they do, and it's believable enough that there were people stuck in similar-ish situations or decisions at one point in the past. There's A LOT to shit on Vinland Saga for overall, but there's also some confusion thrown into the mix when retards incapable of understanding a few basics of structure try to talk about it

It was presented abysmally as everything after the farm arc is Thorfinn assuming an authoritarian role, effectively attempting to disarm all of the others while he tried to do everything himself with his super viking ninja skills. He rendered his own people vulnerable, and the only reason any of them survived was because the sensible ones built a wall and armed themselves. If only they had those defenses earlier, way more of them would have lived, the violent tribes would have been deterred, and the friendly ones would have been lent an olive branch.

All of the deaths are Thorfinn's fault, because his warped idea of pacifism was terrible.
In a way, Thorfinn ended up doing exactly as his father did: making retarded concessions where it wasn't necessary, endangering his own in an attempt to placate others who would take advantage of him anyway, and refusing to decisively stop those threatening him in a vain belief that they would capitulate peacefully.
At least Thors kept to himself and made sacrifices that primarily impacted him, he didn't wrangle a couple hundred people on boats and get them killed.

First off, I haven't kept up with the manga since they left Iceland to America, but I've seen general summaries of what has happened in the final Vinland arc. I think more than any disappointment in the manga, I'm just feeling baffled at Yukimura. What was the point of it all? The confrontation between Canute and Thorfinn about how to achieve paradise on Earth? The refusal to listen to Thorkell that forgoing violence isn't possible? Or his father's final words about a warrior not needing any weapon? None of these points that the manga was seemingly about has even an attempt at a real conclusion if Thorfinn still has the same mentality about absolute pacifism that he settled on about halfway into the manga, only to fail utterly in Vinland.

I was always curious but generally convinced for most of this manga's serialization that Vinland Saga was Yukimura's attempt to show Viking society in a way that would lift a lot of preconceived notions for modern notions. That's why instead of just the fun low-stakes pirate raiding that we had in the initial chapters, we also see how some Vikings were involved in the larger politics of the era and had difficulty adjusting to the emergent kingdoms of England and Scandinavia that wished to centralize some power away from them. That's why we had an extensive arc about farming and slaves, because Vikings ultimately lived in an agrarian society and the slave-trade was a major aspect of their society. And that's why I also thought we would get a Miklagaard arc, because Vikings were also renowned as traders... But of course, we never got that trading arc, and Yukimura instead wished to hurry to the ultimate destination. And for the record, that's not why I dropped Vinland Saga. My life just got busier at that point and since VS was always popular enough for other scanlation groups to compete with my releases, I decided to prioritize finishing up a few other series like Ad Astra before taking a hiatus from translating altogether.

He didn´t achieve his goals but they have not been proven impossible either. He is not really utterly defeated so there certainly is room for him to try again, he is also not dead so we don´t know if his quest was enough to sate the conflicting spirits that haunt him or if he´ll be able to achieve peace. He hasn´t even meet Canute again.

In any case, I'm confused why Yukimura wanted to rush into the final arc so much when it's clear that he didn't even have a good resolution for his manga's central themes. The historical fact that Vikings came to violent clashes with the Native Americans meant that it was settled from the get-go that Yukimura NEEDED to give a proper answer about the uses and limits of violence in the final arc. I mean, there's no way he would have drawn a manga for two whole decades without having some sort of satisfying answer in mind, r-r-right? I thought for sure after chapter 112, Yukimura definitely had a good answer in mind. In that chapter, Yukimura does show that he understands how violence, or more accurately, the possibility of violence, served to moderate violence and bring about social cohesion. And the sad irony to Yukimura is that in the setting of his manga the wholly correct Thorfinn is himself the anachronism.

The last point I want to make is whether an alternative peace even exists at all. I don't really know what kind of pacifism Yukimura believes in, but from the scenes I've seen posted from the manga's final arc, it seems like the society that Yukimura/Thorfinn longs for is one in which a shared humanity allows one person to feel another's pain as his own, thereby allowing for social cohesion and cooperation. Admirable as this sounds, the obvious problem is that it ultimately doesn't scale up. Modern societies require solving coordination problems where hundreds of thousands, many completely unknown and anonymous, are involved in basic transitions such as buying a good from Amazon. This is a scale so large that a belief in shared humanity, even if shared by all members, would be so diluted that it could never pose a significant check on violence or instability.

And the problem with this shared humanity was seen long before the advent of modern society too. A particularly relevant example would be in Confucianism, which is essentially a philosophy about how to bring about human flourishing via teaching them their shared humanity. The Legalist critique of this back like, 2400 years ago, was that you can't just show people the Way. Sure the enlightened man can easily be convinced to walk the Way but there needs to be things like actual laws backed up with the threat of violence in order to truly compel the masses. Meanwhile, the Confucians said that being forced to "become good" through laws and punishments was not only completely futile, but would actually encourage bad behavior. Both sides had a point though, and so even though Confucianism and Legalism started off like oil and water, Chinese civilization synthesized the two together with good success.

The problem with this is that there's no real dividing line between the premodern and modern world in terms of the usefulness of violence. It's a difference of degree, not kind. While we definitely do live in more peaceful times than ever, all of that is possible because human societies are now regulated by an enormous state which generally claims a monopoly on violence. Yes, you no longer need to kill your neighbor if he stole your TV, nor do you need to call all your friends and family to attack your neighbor's kin, because we can generally rely on the police and legal system to sort out any interpersonal conflicts. The police and legal system is thereby empowered with enough force to handle individuals who dare to not abide by the state's system. So the violence and the possibility of violence is still very much a part of modern society. It's kind of why I always felt that Canute had the right answer (by right, I mean historically achievable), but I looked forward to seeing if Thorfinn could at least offer a reasonable alternative... which I don't think he did.

I'm just trying to interpret what he's written for so long. To me Yukimura has been writing this as a tragedy from the get go, with his foreknowledge of the colony's failure he has to. The tragedy to Yukimura is that Thorfinn was just too foreword thinking for his time and doomed by others.

I'm disappointed not because I'm ideologically opposed to Yukimura, but because ever since the end of the farmland arc, there doesn't seem to have been any thematic progression. Thorfinn basically finished developing as a character by the end of that arc, and the manga has continued on without adding anything that I felt was new and substantive. My ideological disagreement with Yukimura only has relevance because I had mistakenly believed that the manga was building up to something more than merely offering pacifism as an ideal, in order to build upon some of the previous character and story arcs as I referenced in >>280876073. Kind of like a classic thesis-antithesis-synthesis progression, I thought Thorfinn's pacifism that he developed as a response to his previous life as a mercenary, would too ultimately come under pressure and he would end up modifying it so as to offer something more attainable and convincing to not only his community, but others as well. But it seems like even in the manga's final moments, his fellow Icelanders don't really see eye to eye with him.

It really peaked for me when Thofinn lamented his life and said living his life was meaningless.
Then I felt like his redemption arc wasn't panned out at all. like the story isn't even about him anymore, and every other major characters that was introduced before all became tertiary.
and the manga didn't really focus on the viking lifestyle that much either. it was a lot more about the interconnected relationships between new characters that I don't care for too much.
I am personally kinda sad that Thorfinn simply stopped progression as a character after becoming ninja jesus,
and some characters like Hilda and Garm are just completely out of place. like they should belong in a fantasy setting and it made no sense how they lived.

And his conclusion, despite fighting in multiple wars, across multiple continents, watching friends, family, strangers, and others get killed vs their aggressors or otherwise, his conclusion is "Just run far away". I know what you mean, and I think the female mangaka generally pay more attention to details like the skeletal structure (like collarbones) and the lines of the overall figure, whereas male mangaka are more concerned on getting the faces and boobs right. Kaoru Mori's a good example of this, but it's still a very rough generalization and I think another important reason is that these female mangaka are influenced by a completely different set of artists (other female mangaka working in shojo/seinen/josei in the 70s-00s) compared ot their male peers.
