Real answer: It's about the human desire to be safe/loved and how that paradoxically leads individuals to both seek and reject others. While there's a lot of the religious symbolism and allusions that are more there to look mysterious and cool, a lot of the references to psychology are not haphazardly chosen and make sense if you take the time to understand them. Ehh I think it even goes more general than that and NGE asserts that living with yourself and making connections is worth it even if it doesn't seem like it. We also see a lot of the ways in which people can be traumatized for pointing out how to cut yourself and others slack because no one is perfect and whole. I think NGE is way too compassionate, despite what it might appear to be because of the torture through which the characters go, to be criticizing otaku and forcefully telling them to change.

In the middle of this Nerve comes to be because humans hope to use the advanced technology of the makers to achieve instrumentality (the combination of all psyches into a single omnimind). This is because the high command actually wants a limited instrumentality within Adam so that they will become gods, but failed that just instrumentality to avoid their destruction in the hands of the more powerful, but less capable of creation and reproduction, childrens of adam.

Now, none of this is ever fully explained in the Anime, movies, or even in the manga. Though the manga has a better view of Gendo getting Adamn into his hand. This is why Evangelion IS a vague anime, because the Worldbuilding is there, but only revealed in extra material and canon games.

The real meat of show is the psychological impact on the protagonists, that have a very limited understating on what's happening and why.
While using Adam and Lilith to create giant clones as weapons capable of battling the Angles (the Evas) Gendo's wife, and Shinji's mother, dies and is consumed by the Lilith clone that would become Eva 01. This makes Shinji a perfect Pilot for the eva, since his mother would accept him fully, giving him better control and more power out of the Clone.

Shinji is despised by his dad, because Gendo, being a misantropic asshole, loved Dr Ikari too much, the only person Gendo accepted into his her, and considered Shinji a competition for her love, but Shinji is too perfect a pilot, due to being young and, again, loved by Doctor Ikari who is now part of the Eva.

All the Angels are actually trying to do is reach Lilith in her ship, which is what Nerv is built above of.


Since, again, nobody that's fighting actually knows anything about this, the story focus more in their minds as they face apocalypsis and the concept of peace as part of instrumentality, peace but at the cost of any will, hopes or desires as a person, vs individualism and development at the cost of challenges.

When the Lilith Clone under Shinji (Eva 01) clashes with Rei fused with Adam at the end, the Impact ocurs and Shinji, in control of the Fake Lilith, gets to decide what happens, since Rei will follow his lead.

The first and second time he just makes the world again, that's the "Rebuild". The world started again with small changes, until finally they move past the the impact and the world of humans continues.

I would say yes an accident on Eva 01, because I really don't think Gendo wanted her gone. It seems like his motivations are mostly to be with her again in instrumentality, different to what the high command of Nerv might had wanted. Maybe they saw that and said "Oh, lets do this again but on propose" for Asuka, and to be fair she(asuka mom) had already killed herself.
Way I see it, Dr. Ikari got consumed while testing the synchronization system. Makes enough sense.

Gendo found light in the darkness of his life, and once it was gone he resolved to bring it back or destroy everything and everyone around him trying, going as far as to betray the wishes of his beloved in the process
Kaji, on the other hand, was too detached and made no attempt to hang on to happiness when Misato initially pushed him away, resolving instead to work towards something he felt as larger than himself, a lofty goal he knew he would never accomplish in life and that would only end up hurting Misato only to then burden her with seeing it to the end

We know from her conversation from Fuyutsuki that she planned to be absorbed by unit 01 as she knew the evangelion wouldn't work otherwise, and she wanted to be the one on board to have control over who got to decide humanity's fate, an honor she wanted Shinji to have as evidenced by the eva's rejection of the dummy plug and how it LITERALLY tells Gendo that it will only answer to her son
She also did not tell Gendo about any of this because she was worried that she might try to stop her, instead choosing to trust that he would look after their son and carry out her vision independently (and then Gendo failed to do any of this, which is why she's so hostile to him in EoE)

That's a bit of a stretch, the manga is extremely similar to the first anime, just with a lot more things in there.

Bottom line the anime propously missed information because the idea was always to leave a lot to the imagination and draw attention to the characters, so it's not that crazy to look for extra information in all the other, several, mediums that have said information.

Disregard the manga, anyway, and it is still clear that Gendo depended on his wife way too much, to the point of not giving a shit about his son once she was gone, or even resenting him because the Eva (which has part of her) and Rei, which is a copy, accept Shinji more than him.

Obviously, it's a minor detail in the grand scheme of things whether Gendo's relation with Shinji is that of lack of interest or straight up dislike and I am ready to agree to disagree. Bottom line Gendo loved his wife and disregarded everything to try and get her back (or join the omnimind with her) after losing her.

Ai is just another tool. It has a very low barrier to entry, and most people don't have enough taste to use it well, which is why there's so much "slop".
