Anon, you wouldn't... ESCAPE the tower (missing out on endless comfort in the process), right? Ms. Tanabe wants to give you an award, and it'd be very rude of you to leave without accepting it.

Episode 5's hype was real. KyoAni found a way.

Hi! I'm a Tsuchinoko!
People always seem to be looking for me, and I'm not sure why! I'm always running around town, trying to lose some of this weight. But no matter how much I exercise, I'm still wide! Ah! Maybe they're looking for me so they can tell me how much my hard work inspires them. Everyone... I'll work hard for your sakes!
The next episode of CITY is episode 6!
You shouldn't have any trouble finding it!

Was that the same blue bird spirit at the end, flying away, after the special ED, that came and visited the original Tanabe at night to bless him and his progeny?
I think the modern day Tanable has made her ancestors proud.

This episode achieves a level of magic so wonderful that anybody trying to do the usual 4chan contrarian shtick is on the same level of a cockroach. But even a cockroach is one of god's creatures and therefore better, so they are on the level of a horrible criminal, one who's crimes can not even muster edgy fans who support them for political reasons, because their motives are just utterly beyond comprehension and disappoint anybody wishing to assign moral justifications to. And even that criminal is better because they do not have the mental capacity to do good, and in a cruel fate, are acting in their own disturbed nature. No, they are below both of these, and are on the level of a deranged criminal who has been reincarnated as a cockroach for thousands of years, being given the sisyphusian task of doing something good with the time they have on this earth, but have made no such progress because they are just that big of a fucking loser.

Also, I wish they moved the subtitles up to whichever scene actually had dialogue.

The same thing Tanabe is rewarding in modern times, and the reason we see so many branching parallel stories breaking off from the initial acts of kindness, it all began with the first Tanabe. It's how the CITY was built out of a VILLAGE. Being generous, being kind, raising people's spirits, and rewarding those who do the same. It multiplies. It spreads. It grows. It snowballs. Even the blue bird spirit and Buddha show up to provide blessings eventually. The frames are just a metaphor for this wonderful virtuous cycle.

At this point I believe Kyoani intended this anime to be for fans of the CITY manga and assumed you already read it. I highly recommend any anime only to read the manga. There's so much from this episode that you missed. I do question the decision to move the introduction of Tekaridake earlier when he's not involved in the tower arc when they could've done the introductions of the Adatara family and Shia instead.

Again, literally all the reactions I'm reading on Xitter and Reddit say otherwise. Many are rewatching the episode. What's so difficult for an anime only to understand in many of the split screens? It's piss easy to infer the information. You will obviously get confused a bit on first watch, but on rewatch it's easy to pick up on details. I'm not sure why you're trying to speak for other people when they're saying the opposite of how they felt

This is the type of sequence I would expect them to pull off for a final episode, since it feels like a culmination of the core idea of the show of having all these different stories that intertwine in a city. I like it, but it feels oddly wasted here. It kind of makes me wonder what they are going to do for the last episode, though.

Live action tower?
The live action model backgrounds with characters animated overtop is interesting.
Kinda funny he just admitted it's to keep people from escaping.
I thought the girl climbing the tower might have moved but I guess not. The spinning camera around the model is a lot, if they had done it in stop motion on top of that, damn.
I would guess all the paintings are reproductions since the real mona lisa is tiny.
Would you wait for your fabulous thankings or would you try and escape anon?
Quite like the idea they are so rich they employ these weirdos to sit in a tower all day just in case someone tries to escape.
Dead
That's the second time we've seen one of them by a giant robot.
The famicom with CRT refresh rate is a nice touch to show the tower progress.
It would have been nice if the lazy localizer had even bothered to translate the game screen though.
As expected of a butt.
Lol, now a four way split. Now five. Now six. Seven. Eight. Nine.
This is way too much shit on screen. All the jokes being missed.
Good lord that's a lot of small animations.
Cute dork got her free food in the end.
Very where's waldo feeling shot. It's nice that every one is still animated.
That was a nice segment at the end.
Kyoani really put in a lot of effort for this. It's amazing to look at every week. This episode might be the best one of the show, who knows yet though.

this the first instance where i think the manga looks better than the anime. while the animated version didn't look bad, and still looked very pleasing; the original's shading really gave the cave extra depth, particularly with the tunnel in the background and the wall in the foreground
also i can only imagine how long it took to do the shading on this panel, i've tried to do stuff like this in the past and it takes HOURS to cover even a small amount of the background

Here's the anime version of THAT scene. I wondered how they would do it, and Kyoani managed to creatively fit in a lot with all those different bubbles merging but not everything. Nobody made a webm of the full scene including the bubbles part, and I would've done it myself, but it simply isn't possible to fit all of it in under 4 MB.

>would be tough
it wouldn't just be tough, it'd also be horrendously time-consuming. difficulty is just half of the challenge with traditional shading, it's also very tedious and to my knowledge arawi does his work the old-fashioned way (on paper); so he likely also has to do it slowly since the risk of fucking it up is a lot higher than it would be if you did it digitally.

>This is the type of sequence I would expect them to pull off for a final episode
And they should have done that. I was surprised last week when we moved to Nagumo being kidnapped because I was sure this would be the season finale.
Instead we got it now, when a considerable part of the characters involved are barely known or even introduced at all. The whole enmity between Nagumo and the landlord only appeared in one quick scene before this.
It was a complete waste to have this when we basically only know 10 characters by name at this point

I love Shaft, but CloverWorks has been way better this decade, even if they had a rough start. For example, in this very season (and regardless of what you may feel about the manga), Sono Bisque is receiving a -pretty much- perfect adaptation. There is also Kaoru Hana, but I've only watched one episode, so I can't say much about it for now. I need to catch up there.

Frieren was obviously a perfect adaptation, so that's reasonable.
Looking at their recent history, though, they aren't quite as consistent as Cloverworks.
They'd be #2 by a considerable margin if everything they made was Frieren-level.

Being honest, while the overall execution of GBC was better, I think the directing of Yorukura was way better than GBC's. One of the main problems I had with the direction of the latter were the goddamn concerts, as they felt fucking null to me.

I wouldn't want it to be every episode like this, but once, with the theme of everyone interconnected in a CITY that was built specifically on giving hospitality and kindness to everyone, so that it would spread and grow and multiply, I think it's brilliant. The characters just keep connecting, and spinning off more stories.

Feels like I just saw one of those historic influential episodes that people will be talking about and referencing 20 years from now. I had a blast watching it the first time and then again rewinding and following each individual arc, not to mention poring over that final Where's Waldo shot for all the little details. Shit like this is why anime exists. FUCK I love this series.

Yeah, the manga always felt like it did a really good job of feeling like the city was an actual city. A lot of characters that interact with each other. It's kind of lost in the anime since we don't get to know the characters as in depth.

>this episode had more and more scenes pile on until the big bubble moment that eventually climaxes with the party to tie in with the ending's point about good deeds and hospitality making the city grow bigger and bigger to where it is now
such brilliant framing devices, you really cannot compete with kyoani's artistry there.

What you described was my experience too, but the thought of having to rewatch it multiple times to catch all stories when I still have at least 4 other episodes of anime to watch today just annoyed me as I was watching. Honestly, they can reasonably fit every single story the manga did in order to get the mega payoff where the whole CITY is there, but this is a good episode.

It still suffers from the recurring issue of characters that haven't been actually introduced simply showing up. Anyone that says it doesnt detract from the experience is honestly coping. Awari wrote it like that for a reason. I know theres budget and time limitations at play but that doesnt make it good. The Tanabe party happens in what, volume 5? Theres dozens of chapters of character introductions and buildup to those wonderful panels. By then youre we'll acquainted with a majority of the characters and their place in the story. Its the whole reason why its so satisfying to see all their stories converge. Its masterfully done. The anime is clearly "making up" for not being able to do the buidup properly by making the whole episode very hectic and detailed. Its good, even great visually. Definitely gets better on a rewatch after you've seen the whole anime and are fully acquainted with all the characters. But a first time viewer isnt getting the same experience they would have gotten reading the manga.

That all being said. I enjoyed the episode.

I think I'm gonna re-read the story time.

I agree with your points, but anime-only watchers may view the show more like a puzzle. Even though the manga is never confusing about what motivates the characters or when events take place, I could see someone noticing how the show makes a point of having side characters walk past one another and thinking that makes the lack of certain details deliberate. Something like, if everybody in the city is part of a new adventure, wouldn't it make sense to meet them at different points of their stories, rather than always the beginning? I've seen it happen before, like with how people have given a lot of thought to Haruhi's broadcast order despite that being an anime-only decision.

Or maybe by the end of the show all the remaining character dynamics are introduced, and viewers just have to stick it out for a while longer.

i've already replied to you before, but i'd also like to shed some light on the extended panel sequence from a (relatively) experienced artist/editor's perspective.
i can tell you right now that what you saw was NOT lazy by any means. synchronizing all of those scenes and making sure they all flow together, designing +animating them, AND the numerous transitions between them all; takes an ungodly amount of time and is anything but low-effort. most of the time taken to do something like this is during storyboards, because it all needs to be laid out by hand. sure once it's all planned out most of the tedious work is those transitions, but getting that scene boarded (remember, it's several minutes long) and ensuring it all flowed perfectly must've took kyoani months of fine-tuning before it was even ready to animate.
now it being lazy from a story perspective? i can actually understand this argument (though I disagree heavily) but don't look at it that way! look at that sequence from the perspective of an artistic achievement, and pushing the genre forward with new and ambitious techniques. : )

As a matter of fact I don't have a single (you), and I'm not sure what you are talking about, but if the key word here is "lazy" I would assume it has to do with the content and not the visuals, putting together a bunch of random scenes with random people that lead to one scene only seems tedious to do so, as you say, but won't require major planning which would in fact make it "lazy", now you say you can understand the criticism towards the content not being handled in the best way, well, that would be my only criticism because I cannot care for visual flare without getting invested into the story, but that's me.

This takes me back. Does any studio even animate in less than 1080p today? I remember around 2010 a native 1080p mastered anime was novel, I think Henkeko or Nyaruko-san or something were the first, with one at 1080p a season.

Last I checked was in 2018 where I remember Megalobox was mastered at 480p for max VHS quality, with some percentage (a third?) less than 1080p. I don't even remeber the .jp site to check the native resolution.

Surely that everyone including the animators are using 4k monitors has killed sub-1080p, right? I presume the native res is closer to 3200x1800 for ease in drawing.

>download the 720p streamrip release of a show listed as >720p by anibin
>download the 1080p streamrip release of the same show
>play them both back with mpc-hc or mpv default settings in fullscreen with a 1080p display
>take a screenshot of the same frame with both releases
>compare
Had you taken the <5 minutes to do this yourself, 10 years ago, rather than simply blindly believing incorrect information like a moron, you would have seen very fucking clearly that the 1080p release would be sharper, with more detail.
That's all you had to fucking do. 10 years ago.
Instead you've been downloading inferior releases for like a decade or more because you're a lazy fucking idiot.

I thought you guys were arguing over whether or not you should ever downloading 720p. Not that a source could never be native 1080p.
I thought you were making the point that you might as well download 1080p regardless of the native res. And I was adding to that point by saying how CR's 720p isn't even the original 720p. Might as well watch an upscale rather than the downscale of an upscale.

I enjoyed Ninkoro but that's not enough for me to say SHAFT is back when it didn't get much attention from general audiences. They've been a zombie studio kept alive by Monogatari and Madoka sequels for too long. It's too soon to determine what impact Ninkoro will have on the studio. It may just be a fluke. Plus, after they used AI in Monogatari, it's going to take more to earn back my goodwill.

Check anibin on internet archive. Way more shows were >720p native than not, even in 2015.
>bitrate starving
The 720p releases were also bitrate starved. They were also downscales. The Funimation ones were even very badly downscaled.
>>281187796
>I thought you were making the point that you might as well download 1080p regardless of the native res.
You should download 1080p whenever the native res is >720p. The result will be greater detail/sharpness.
Back when anibin was an active thing, the right way to go about it was to download 1080p for anything anibin listed as >720p.
Now that anibin isn't a thing, if you don't feel like being a turbo autist and doing his testing method yourself, you're better off just downloading 1080p for everything, as *most* shows are >720p native these days.

I hated it. This is the weakest episode by a lot. The only one that's made me feel an emotion other than total joy (that emotion being total annoyance). If I wanted to watch ridiculous multiview nonsense I'd put on ESPN and be bored to tears by that instead. Half of the mini-plots were pointless, the other half would have been better with the focus on them.

It's well-animated, but then the entire series has been so far. So if that's all it has going for it, it's not much of anything.

You could cut half of the screen off the first episode then play it out again with the other half visible, that doesn't mean it has rewatch value.

Call me a retard who got filtered but I didn't care for this episode at all. I really enjoyed last episode after feeling ambivalent about the first 3 so I was hoping I would enjoy the rest.
Visually it was impressive and very well executed. I think my problem is that I simply don't care about most of the characters, and the humor is more miss than hit for me.
If it was all or mostly Wako, Eri, and Matsuri being cute and goofing around it would be so much better.

I think manga readers can't appreciate how hard it is to care about a bunch of stories going on at once when you're only acquainted with half of them and the other half are brand new, in what's already a decently disconnected show. They got a lot of buildup over many chapters into the sequence. They'll also tell you this is your fault for not reading the manga, and that's probably the case.
Still, these stories could have been strong enough to stand on their own instead of being relegated to 1/8th the screen and something a new viewer isn't going to care about.

I'm sorry, everyone, but I would be lying if I said I didn't hate this fucking episode. The series was going perfectly so far until this episode went all avant-garde. It felt like a complete butchering of the source material, they included like a dozen subplots from the manga and reduced them into tiny frames in the corner of the screen for seemingly no reason.

It felt like this was the final episode, and they ran out of budget, except this wasn't the final episode, and it probably took a lot of work to make those tiny animated segments just to waste them like that.

I also didn't like how they introduced the granny who in the manga is Nagumo's landlord that she's always avoiding, but here, nobody who hasn't read it has any idea who she is or why Nagumo was intent on not submitting to her. It was all just so random and unnecessary. Not to mention Shia and the sisters being introduced in that tiny box gag so you don't even know their names (can you even call this a gag?). I like Kyoani and Arawi, but this was simply not it,

Why? If it tries something avant-garde and fails horribly, then it just downgraded itself. The story is strong, it deserves proper execution.
Experimentation for experimentation's sake is idiotic, it needs to have purpose. Thinking that it's good is literal first-year liberal arts student behavior.
Not really related, but I do agree about the "practical effects", they're awesome. Practical effects isn't the right word but I know what you're getting at. It's really only the simulcast sequence that I have problems with.

CITY is a slice of life with some light humor added a la Nichijou, not some OC anime where the studio can do whatever they want with it. There was criticism within an hour. That was, of course, after scholarly thinkers had time to digest and process and come to the unfortunate conclusion (they fumbled it). Meanwhile easily-impressed zoomers, such as yourself, flocked to make your insipid opinions heard. KyoAni is capable of fucking up. Nobody likes a fanboy.
Don't bother denying your zoomer status by the way, I can tell because you jumped straight to the "thirdie" cope.

>You don't need context for everything that is happening
Well, that was part of my issue with it. Without the context, why the fuck would you care about 75% of what's going on during that sequence? With the context, I'm left wishing 75% of that sequence got more attention than just being shoved to the bottom corner of the screen.

(You) were happy when the fire happened because (You) don't like the genres of anime KyoAni animates. Because (You) perceive those who like those genres as your enemies.
(You) were disappointed, even angry, when Maid Dragon season 2 and Hibike season 3 were just as good as the seasons which came before them.
But now? (You) are absolutely furious, because KyoAni found a way. (You) are absolutely furious, because KyoAni actually came back better than ever. Because it's visually compelling and you're interested to see where it's going? Without context why care about anything? At this point why care about a "proper introduction" without context beforehand, an intro to the intro? Everything has to start somewhere, I think it's interesting to start some character stories in the middle of a scene instead of having to do introductions nonstop, certainly for this kind of story.

Agreed. Someone earlier said the party was in volume 5, if that is the case it's kind of a shame they're rushing through everything so quickly. "A decently disconnected show" is a good way to put it, which is ironic and unfortunate given that a large part of this episode seemed to be about the connection between all of the different characters in the city.

Why should I answer, so you can blow it completely out of proportion into a total strawman again? Someone without context won't care "where it's going" when half the sequence is just looping images. They'll only care about the fleshed out parts, including the story that was already in progress and massively disrupted for this gimmicky sequence. The context is important. Even in this very thread you see anime-onlies missing the entire point about some of the plots within the sequence.

>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ITS NOT LIKE THE ORIGINAL MATERIAL REEEEEEE
Is this your first KyoAni anime? Real question?
K-ON! is famously 80% original content.
In their clannad, they hard focused on Nagisa route and ignored everyone else because they claimed they were pointless and a waste of time.
Silent voice movie doesn't even convey the same message as the manga and they rearrange shit in order to have a climax without the last 2 volumes.
Kyoto Animation always had a specific view of the concept of "adaptation" meaning they adapt in the way they interpret the story.
They clearly wanted to display the multitude of little scenarios occuring simultaneously as a metaphor for the city itself, that's why every bubble is assembled in the end for one glorious shot with every residents.
