>A comfy and compelling start to a laidback story, with emotional impact and a promise of a story that'll evolve to something grand.

Orange Town arc: 8/10
>Feels like what it is, a fun, short romp with Luffy adding a couple of friends to his crew, doesn't overstay its welcome, and manages to introduce the marines as a faction that, while Luffy's enemy, isn't just all black-and-white

>Tad too long, but still a fun arc, Usopp is immediately a standout character in many way, and his addition feels genuinely exciting as the cowardly lion

>The first arc that starts to feel more like a "proper" shonen, the small setting makes the arc feel longer than it is, but Mihawk and Zoro's defeat brings about some intrigue. Sanji's backstory is cool, but adds length.

Arlong Park: 9/10
>First really good arc since the beginning, this where the story really hooked me. Nami's backstory, the themes of the arc and everything about it felt really good. There were a couple of parts that felt like a bit fillery, like Luffy being stuck underwater.

Loguetown: 9/10
>While the story has been going on for a good while, this is where you get that "holy shit, this really is just the beginning, isn't it?" vibe. The world starts to feel like it really is much bigger than just the Strawhats, and that Luffy may be in over his head.

Reverse Mountain: 7/10
>Shit starts to get kinda wild with Laboon, and it'll only get wilder from here on out. This is where it really hits you that this is indeed a fantasy world with absurd shit in it, and that the comedy can extrent beyond gags, and become "reality" in the story. Very fun, nonetheless, and feels like buildup to what's about to come.

Whiskey Peak: 8/10
>Continues with the setup theme, and manages to be very cool where as the shit with Laboon was funny first and foremost. Zoro gets his moment to shine, but the fight with Luffy feels like forced fanservice.

>More of the fun absurdity of the series starts to show with dinosaurs and giants, and it's clear at this point that Oda is just unapologetically having fun, adding whatever he wants to the story, but it works. A whimisical and interesting adventure, that just adds fuel to the fire that is the threat of a Schichibukai looming in the background

Drum Island: 9/10
>While Nami's backstory was sad and amazing, this is where the emotional punches get nigh unbearable. And while Drum isn't the first arc to have social commentary (like Arlong Park with racism), it's almost surprising how direct Oda is being with the theme of access to healthcare here. Overall a very good arc.

Alabasta: 10/10
>The first BIG arc, Alabasta manages to actually fulfill the promises of the earlier setup arcs and is a grand adventure, our first step out of the comfy island-to-island adventrues into a grand story with great stakes. Crocodile not only defeats Luffy, but does so twice, and manages to feel like a threat in a way that no one so far has.

Jaya: 10/10
>An often overlooked little arc, Jaya is a culmination of what we've had so far with a mix of themes, emotion, comedy and adventure, it introduces us to Blackbeard in what I feel is genuinely the best main antagonist introduction ever. This arc got me excited for what is to come, if this was where the story started, it'd be just as amazing a start to an adventure than what we actually got. Reignited my passion and calmed my fears for what can Oda do to keep the momentum going after Alabasta.

Skypiea: 9/10
>Another big arc, a bit too long at times but genuinely THE best adventure arc. Amazing that Oda can make me care enough of Noland and Calgara, to the point that I was excited for their flashback when it began. While many hate Skypiea, I feel like it's just because it's in between Alabasta and Water 7, and people didn't pay too much attention to it before the Nika stuff happened.

>After the grand adventure that is Skypiea, it manages to be a bit of a breather full of comedy, but it's actually not only surprisingly relevant to the story (the chance to lose crew members) and setup for Water 7, but it also manages to subtly showcase us something that's about to be relevant: Even after two monstrous Logia users, a weakling with weird abilities can give you a run for your money, and be a threat you may just lose to if you don't take them seriously

Water 7: 10/10
>The best arc up until this point, Oda once again switches gears and almost changes the genre by making this a suspenseful mystery with a lot of moving parts. One half of what I consider to be the peak of pre-timeskip One Piece, W7/EL is seen as a defining arc for good reasons.

Enies Lobby: 10/10
>The action-filled payoff and conclusion to the mysteries and questions laid in Water 7, like Loguetown and Alabasta before it, it again expands the scope of the world and the powers that be in a way that makes the crew feel, in a good way, a small fish in a big pond, making big moves and gaining the attention of the bigger fish.

Thriller Bark: 8/10
>The only real downside is the Skypiea Syndrome, it's between amazing arcs and often overlooked by many, but Thriller Bark, like Skypiea, is a great adventure and in many ways a return to form. Brook's backstory remains as the most harrowing of all the Strawhats, and I love his character. Feels a tad separated from the rest of the story, as if there's no "intention" to it, but Kuma and Lola ground it when going forward. In addition to current theories about TB being God Valley

Sabaody: 10/10

Amazon Lily: 7/10
>Starts to setup what's about to come in an intriguing way that has some neat adventures going on, but I miss the other Strawhats and still am kinda annoyed at Oda for relegating their stories as anime fillers. The first arc where it feels like Oda is cutting important content for the sake of the anime. Hancock is funny but gets a bit too one-note after falling for Luffy.

Impel Down: 9/10
>An amazing arc, the setting feels genuinely hellish and we get again all of the elements that Oda is best with in the same arc, with the emotion, adventure and the action. Magellan feels like a genuinely unstoppable force, and Blackbeards presence is sinister and acts as a cool setup for his own grand plan. Mr. 2 will forever be my goat, his sacrifice was the emotional high-point of the arc.

Marineford: 9/10
>This is the point where it becomes clear that for all of his progress, Luffy truly still is a rookie. I've yet to see any other Shonen MC get this sort of a character arc, and Ace's death was so sudden and unexpected that it really made me skip a beat. But it's an incredibly effective choice from a storytelling standpoint, and Luffy needed it to happen. Ironically enough, in a story where it sometimes feels like there are no stakes, this the one arc where there were far more at stake than the reader expected. "Of course Ace wouldn't die, this is setup for him to take over the Whitebeard Pirates", is what it says to you, just before Ace gets killed in a way far more brutal than anything we've seen so far.

Return to Sabaody: 9/10
>Again, like Jaya, this feels like this could be the first chapter of a story in many ways, and it feels like we're really setting out for something even bigger. The new Strawhat designs are cool for the most part (Aside from one: Franky's my favorite character and I'll never forgive Oda) and it's neat to see how much stronger they've gotten, yet they still feel like the same characters, which is important.

Fishman Island: 10/10
>The MOST underappreciated arc in the story, genuinely has some of the best social commentary of any manga I've ever read, and it has the single best analysis of racism I've seen in fiction, ever. The overtly colourful, fantastical and inviting world of Ryugu Kingdom is the setting for one of the most realistically depressing stories in One piece. It's ironic that a Japanese man is able to grasp the nuances of racism in the western world, especially in US, far more effectively than most actual real-life Americans, black or white. Genuinely a masterclass of dealing with actual, serious matters in a cartoonishly fantastical setting.

Punk Hazard: 8/10
>A setup arc that feels exactly like a setup arc. It's cool to see the other rookies come into play, and this is where we start to see the trend where Luffy starts to surpass old threats like Smoker. It's also the first arc that mirrors an old arc in many ways, something we'll see in EVERY arc going forward.

Dressrosa: 7/10
>A great arc, basically a "what if Crocodile succeeded before the Strawhats came" type of retelling of Alabasta. I don't mind the mirroring, since Oda gives us a different story with the same themes. But while it was clear it's more setup for future stuff, the entire gladiator arena thingy did feel like it was just stretching an already bloated arc further.

Zou: 8/10
>Short and sweet, has mirrors Skypiea in many ways, and acts as another setup arc. At this point it's clear that Oda's arc are growing so large that they NEED separate setup arcs to function. It's fine though, since they're generally worth the wait, but it does slow the story a bit.

Whole Cake Island: 9/10
>Aside from slight stretching (WEDDINGU CAKE) it's one of the best Post-TS arcs in One Piece, and Big Mom actually is a great character and feels exactly the kind of threat you'd expect from a Yonko, while still managing to be a funny character at times.

Oda doesn't expand on Zoro's background, we don't get a big Kaido flashback, the Kokeshi dolls go nowhere, some obvious matchups like Brook vs. Apoo don't happen, the Smile users were a dud etc. but we DO get pointless shit like the Ice Zombie plague, Yamato, and Tama's convenient Deus Ex Machina DF to nullify the Smile users Oda spent years building up. The worst thing though is Oda rushing, he clearly jammed Big Mom into the same arc just to get rid of both her and Kaido at once without having to write a separate arc to take her down. She got done dirty, which is ironic since her setup was better than Kaido's, but Kaido's actual takedown was better than what she got. Wano could've been a 10/10 arc, but Oda kinda dropped the ball here and mixed his priorities.

Egghead: 10/10
>We're in the endgame, now. This is the best Post-TS arc so far, and there's not much to add. While after Wano it felt like Luffy isn't REALLY a Yonko yet, this is exactly the kind of "incident" that feels proper for a Yonko. Taking down Kaido may have made Luffy a Yonko on paper, but this is what earned him the title.

It's an absolute waste due to the story it is set in. One Piece characters do not have strength in any consistent way, it's not that Zoro can lift, I don't know, 2 tons, but won't lift 3. This stat is so arbitrary with normal humans being capable of achieving such absurd feats that this is entirely meaningless. It's like Kizaru was only given a Speed fruit instead of a Light. Nah it's unironically far better to have a fruit that boosts your natural strengths, rather than a completely different power. Among top tiers Devil Fruits matter less and less as it becomes all about Haki and physical strength. See Garp vs Aokiji, or Luffy vs Kaido. Devil Fruits at that level just gets you a couple of other attacks, but are not game changers. However, nobody can deny that Garp with Burgess strength fruit wouldn't instantly become more powerful than Roger.

I've noticed that a larger proportion of newer One Piece readers like the more "secondary" characters than a lot of lifelong readers, probably for that reason. I still think Franky, Ussop, etc. that people complain about "not having done anything" have done a lot. It's just not as outright as beating someone up. The characters are growing into their roles more, I never felt that certain characters had become useless just because they didn't have a 1v1 battle with someone and win.

Law is the only one I could see Luffy getting angry about, since the opponent is Blackbeard and Law wasn't looking for him. Kid and Barto fucked around and found out, Shanks is a pirate afterall.
The Hearts are the ones I'm sure are fine, since Bepo said they won't be killed so easily. Law and Bepo are also the only ones that got away for sure and are now in a safe enough place to hear about Vegapunk transmission. The big problem is that Law is a fucking emotionally constipated(tsundere) and won't look for the Strawhats' help, especially with all the attitude at the end of Wano(I don't see Luffy caring about it, since he obviously know Law is a good guy and was bluffing)

By the way, will the anime take a break or return to fillers? It's catching up really fast.

It's impossible to separate it from atlantas; and therefore Greek mythology, when seen from a western viewpoint, even if Oda hadn't intended this when coming up with it. They are managing a world scale revolution, so they don't have time or resources to go around building strength. Most of their operatives have tricky skills, not 100% battle oriented save for Sabo after getting mera powers. Yonkos are ultimately pirates, so they would suck at building a power or movement that lasts beyond their years. Even the revolutions in One Piece are easily squashed, with almost no leverage and time consuming. Pirates usually have short carreers, and those who have extensive and meaninful ones are retired or already gone.
