They definitely can if you're willing to live all over the world.
Between internet randoms and real people I met traveling, there have been quite a few who work in oil and gas.
I think one of them spent most of his time on a boat doing something related to searching for oil. But it's not like he was on the boat all the time, it was like x amount of time and then y amount of time off(where y was pretty good, and more time than on the boat). And the pay was well into the six figures iirc(and this was many years ago, would have gone up a lot by now).
Also knew a guy irl who worked in something related to gold mining and he seemed to make quite a lot of money. He would work in Indonesia for a period, and then spend all his off time in Thailand.
The main theme was really high salaries with required travel, but lots of time off to enjoy your money.
Also not directly related but it was the same shit for an IT guy friend working for what was once the Saudi/American oil company(Saudi Aramco). He had to live there, but got a lot of time off and made 2x US market rate and could basically retire any time he wanted.
With how important stuff like rare earths, batteries/anything energy related, precious metals etc are I never understood the meme that geology was shit.
Maybe people are thinking of it only in the sense of someone staying in academia and not getting out into the world.
Never met anyone in a geology related field irl while traveling, or even online that wasn't very successful economically.
