I really don't think he did. Sasuke is the one who bent his fingers at the last moment for a less lethal strike. Naruto was reaching to hit Sasuke any way he could and all he reached was his forehead protector. On the other hand, if Sasuke hadn't put it on earlier, Naruto's hit would have knocked him out too for a double KO or a Naruto victory.

The war simultaneously being the arc where Neji dies while being the arc where he's shafted the most is odd to me.
In most arcs he's not relevant because he's either doing something else or just not there, but in the war he's fighting front and center and yet gets no focus.
His death is treated as an "impactiful moment" that ""nearly"" turned Naruto bad and also what drives Naruto closer to Hinata but it makes no effort to delevop their relationship or even the one Neji has with Hinata.
For all intents and purpose there's no reason to believe Naruto and Neji were any closer than they were in part 1 where their relationship boiled down to "mutual Warrior respect", but NO! We NEEDED to see Inoshikacho fighting Kakuzu again, we NEEDED to see Samurais that were never relevant beforehand and will be forgotten afterwards, we NEEDED to see Gaara fighting his father, a fight so ass people don't remember a single thing about it beyond how egregious Rasa's redemption was.
