backlog status?
Anonymous No.281699605
All too alive and well. I have a show or two from last fall to watch.
Anonymous No.281699806
Not much progress, but at least it's not getting much bigger either.
Anonymous No.281699819
Haven't been able to work on it since I'm still catching up on stuff from this season.

Why waste time on that when i could just be here?

Make friends with a guy who has a huge Plex server. I'm pretty sure you can shuffle your watchlist.

Unless I suddenly become rich and stop working, I'll never clear that fucker. I'm not exaggerating for comedic effect or anything like that, my work-life balance is that bad.

it'll take a minute to catch up
Anonymous No.281704848
I finished a show about a week ago, one yesterday, and I'm on track to finish one tonight. I think I have a dozen things or less and most of them are either single-cour or things I don't remember adding to my list and don't know if I really care about. My goal is to get it cleared out by the start of fall season, and maybe even picking up an extra thing or two before then if I missed anything that's really good.

I finished Votoms a week ago and finally got around to the newest shinkai movies too.
I've made peace with the fact that I'll never finish my backlog. It's ok, I'll just watch what I feel like watching.

I'm on pretty good progress on everything despite watching 15+ seasonal shows, reading a VN and a LN alongside juggling two shows and watching movies (I just watched the Eva Rebuilds one a day over the past 4 days, with today being 3.0+1.0). It helps to be a NEET.

Yep, I started learning Japanese about 3 years ago and the only times I've used subtitles since is whenever I'm seeing an anime movie in theaters since I don't exactly have a choice (but I do ignore them.) The only thing of note that's given me an issue too as of late is the technobabble in Eva, being a NEET also means lots of study time.

Hey nice, really happy for you. NTA but I started getting serious a few years ago myself. My listening is way behind but reading is getting to be pretty low effort. I really need to listen to more stuff.
Anonymous No.281705538
>>281705424
Thank you. Once your reading becomes low effort learning Japanese becomes so much easier, your listening will grow too. Youtube helped my listening a lot, though I still do use Japanese subtitles whenever present, just too convenient when looking up a word I didn't know.

It's going ok, and I'm not bothered by its length. I've even managed to rewatch a few things.
Helps that I drop shows at the slightest provocation these days.

I've had the same backlog for the past decade. I should probably go through them all, although I will just drop most of them because of how my tastes have changed.

nta but get a pop-up dictionary and just read stuff
manga with furigana would be perfect too
never read a Japanese work in anything except Japanese

I stopped when I realized I don't even like these shows nor even interested. Dandadan or mushoku might be great and all but I think I would rather rewatch shows that I liked back then.

Just what >>281710480 said. Set up Yomitan or an equivalent extension, get a few of the usual dictionaries but also grab JP-only ones and when you get more comfortable move them to the front. Manga and news articles starting with NHK Easy Web, also play games set in modern Japan (e.g. Yakuza) and commit to reading a bunch of the shit you see walking around, or take the game aspect out of it and use Street View on Google Maps.
I also went all in on stuff like Wanikani and Bunpro when they had discounted lifetime subscriptions because I knew they were something I could stick with and made it at my laziest an hourly part of my life.

I was posting in a hurry because I didn't want to leave you hanging and the thread was about to purge so I left a few things out:
It took me forever to notice that you could just put images into google translate because I was so used to looking them up the hard way. Don't stop doing things the hard way when you can, but it's nice to just screenshot and paste a novel compound if everything else is flowing easily.
If you're still actively learning kanji (or it wasn't included when you were) look up some resources on semantic-phonetic construction. I don't know why the hell we weren't taught about it when I studied Japanese in college, but I went a long time with random gut feelings as to how certain kanji were read and it turned out it's no coincidence. There are Anki decks for it and a script for Wanikani that adds a section about it. There are probably other good references but I haven't looked extensively.
If you're frequently using a site that has furigana without a toggle, write or look into a script or style override to blur them if you're not moused over so you can't just lapse and get lazy for a moment.

Unironically getting through it. I've finished more anime from my backlog these last two years than the past decade combined. Started the last season of Zero no Tsukaima yesterday. Now if only I could do the same for manga...
