i initially didnt like one piece because i thought all the characters and powers were wacky and lame. then i realized that the powers being wacky and lame WAS the point. Luffy had a suboptimal devil fruit and when fighting stronger fruits like logias and legendary zoans you realize its his grit and combat prowess, and sometimes funny matchups (enel) that carry him through. It's not about the power or strength you are given for free (via a good fruit) but what you earned.
The timeskip where they come back and wrecked the pacifistas which split them up two years ago was soooo peak because it showed what they accomplished with their hard work and effort.
Having a legendary fruit suddenly undermines all of that.

Secondarily, I really liked the idea of "inherited will" as more of a "found family". Whitebeard is Ace's "pops" even though they aren't related. Similarly, someone will come along and inherit Ace's "will". Luffy too inherits the wills of several people and "carries their dreams on his back" during many story arcs, and the funny part is he doesn't even know he's doing it. He's just a stretchy boi who wants to become king of the pirates.

Yes, Oda has really ramped up the world building with the world government, gorosei, imu, exploitation, slavery, all that jazz, and its cool... but the BEST part about it, is that it is layered on top of a "simple" story of action and adventure and the dreams of one young boy.

Turning everything into "oh well actually he is related to..." and "oh well his fruit is ACTUALLY", in my opinion, actually UNDERMINES the foundations of the story that we've built up to this point

Ah, that hasn't really changed though. It is true that Luffy inherited Roger's will and Joyboy's will. However, he wasn't really "chosen" in terms of there being a prophecy which said that "one day a child from the monkey family will inherit the blah blah blah". In fact, Roger didn't even know who would possess the Nika fruit. He actually assumed it was Ace and probably asked Shanks to steal the fruit and hand it to him. But alas, the fruit chose Luffy instead. And it only chose Luffy because of who Luffy's personal qualities which matched Roger and Joyboy. Not because of some "fixed prophecy" which said that only Luffy would be the one to have it. Hell, if Shanks went to another village, the fruit would probably "escape" and find another user.
Also one thing to keep in mind is that Luffy was not the first user of the fruit. We know from the gorosei's words that the fruit has had many users in the past. This suggests that Luffy isn't really a "chosen" one in the sense that he was the only one to have the fruit. He was just the one after a long series of failed successors to finally awaken it.
