He was also on an edgy gothic horror stint starting with Oniisama e, and Black Jack was basically just building off of what Oniisama established. Thanks anon, I'll definitely start it next and i appreciate the information. I really enjoyed episode 2 as well as episode 8 of the OVA so if it's really similar it can indeed be right up my alley with the interests. I think one think BJ has gotten down is the perfect amount of creepy within the eyes. It might not be intentional but eevn within episode 4 when the MC was shown to be with catina she often has large open eyes displaying the whole pupil and it adds a crazed look to her. Even though the direct reason was parasites in the end, an added side note could be mental health issues exacerbated the symptoms. It's a nice touch overall because when she gets older she loses that crazed look (dormant?).
I'm rambling a bit but i really like a lot of blackjack. The surgical scenes are gorgeous and knowing they're cel work is even better.

There was this black jack episode where a guy gets a skin transplant from his fusilated mother. The original chapter referenced the civil war in El Salvador, but the adapted episode moved the conflict to fictional not-serbia. I wonder if they wanted to avoid political stances or just did it for aesthetic reasons. Still that chapter is one of the few references to El Salvador in manga.

If you really feel this way and can't enjoy things for what they are then I suggest you try some of the World Masterpiece Theatre anime. Since its based on literature it has an elegance to the characters and plot that most anime cannot compare with despite being for children

The manga is great, the anime is good when it closely follows the manga (like with Mariko's party) but 90% of the stuff it adds is corny and badly thought out. Like later in the series there are thwarted suicide attempts every few episodes. Not to mention some major differences in St. Just's plot between the manga and anime. Despite the production values they didn't have characters wearing different outfits in every scene like the manga either.

There’s still a lot of outfit variation throughout the series though. Nanako alone has like 8-10 different outfits she wears over the course of the series. I think Kaoru and Rei are the only ones whose wardrobe is limited to 1 or 2 outfits, but that’s because it’s in character for both of them.

The fact that Oniisama e got an anime adaptation at all is also a miracle. Even if it is an influential manga, most studios nowadays would laugh in your face if you said to them that you wanted to make a high budget 39 episode long adaptation of a 70s shoujo manga. My guess is Dezaki had some serious pull in the industry at that point, because I don’t know how else a passion project like that would have gotten past the pitching stage.

Episode 6 is probably one of the best the medium has to offer. I know I am a sucker for jidaigeki but the animation and direction were impeccable. Tsukiko from ep. 10 was top cute but the visuals go to shit at the last stretch of the show. Started watching Kuusou Kagaku Sekai Gulliver Boy, and it's about what I expected from the creators of Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru. Only I was sure it was going to be an isekai, given that Wataru is an isekai, plus the main character's name is Gulliver. The main characters are kind of boilerplate and frankly not that interesting so probably won't try to watch the whole thing. I do like it better than Wataru so far though, it feels more focused on the serial narrative and less villain-of-the-week.

For me I try to watch about 2-4 hours of anime a day and when you watch that sheer volume of a show that quickly what you value about it shifts compared to more reasonable amounts.
So in this context I think I enjoyed ZZ more than Zeta simply because the fights are more varied. With Zeta there was this factor of 'I've been watching mechs dodge and shoot in space for an hour' that was nowhere near as bad in ZZ. That being said I think I'll pick out individual episodes from Zeta to rewatch more.
Even though ZZ is a nearly 40 year old show I don't want to spoil it for you, I will say contrary to some claims (despite some surprising and frankly upsetting deaths) it never becomes as bleak as Zeta and ends on a much more hopeful note.
Bright continues to be my favorite character.

I recently watched Nadeisco for the second time. I enjoyed the meta elements more, caught lots of jokes I'd missed, and was engaged the whole way through.
Also, I think Yurika should have just opened fire on the Jovians when they betrayed the Earth during the peace talks . Which is neat, because it's an example of a commander making the (very debatably) wrong decision due to a subordinate's good advice!

The fights in ZZ are definitely better but what kept me so constantly engaged and enamored with Zeta was its characters, particularly Kamille and Quattro. The Shangri-La crew + Roux and Puru/Ple are all great and likeable for one reason or another but they aren't quite resonating for me quite as hard as the Zeta cast did. Still liking ZZ a lot though, it's definitely a much better show than I was led to believe.

Anyone else miss the look and craft of cel animation? Both in anime and in general.

I don't know about anyone else's process for z Gundam but mine was bewilderment at first being confused and laughing about how weird it was that everybody was just hitting each other for no reason. it seemed pretty dated for that but then as I kept watching I really enjoyed the dynamics and growth of kamille and the different intricacies and play by plays that you can infer from char into his life now as Quattro.
You also tend to see quatro as someone who finally gets a little break from his past to just enjoy his life before everything sort of catches up to him and just how frustrated he gets when it does.
I just feel like there's a lot to take away from in zeta ending aside there's so much more that you can see.
Especially something like Camille being almost directly a parallel to amadou but he never took the childish root. He took the root where he made the choice to go rather than it forced upon him. I feel like Camille and amuro are honestly a little bit of a copy and paste character of each other but how they develop their motivations over time is different. amuro to me feels like he never wants to pilot a Gundam. Whereas Camille doesn't necessarily want to pilot a Gundam but he makes the choice to do it rather than it feels like thrusting the Gundam on him.

This is long but it's even a condensed version of my thoughts and maybe one day I'll write it all out completely when I'm not also dead tired.

Im sorry beforehand, this is not the right place since its a post 2000 show (2003 20+ years old now but still) but i need to vent and i dont think making a whole thread just for that is worth it.

I just recently finished the first season of gunslinger girl and loved it, it was moody and sad without being overly edgy but it was also sweet and beautiful in the more poignant moments. I had heard bad things about the 2nd season but i thought it was just a common case of trying to fit too much in one season or maybe and original plot or ending that was stupid or maybe the animation just sucked so i just went and watched the 1st episode.

They...fucking raped this anime. Its gone. The gorgeous atmosphere, the enchanting italian vistas, the stoic nature of the characters, the somewhat subtle and subdued storytelling, the not great but decent enough animation, its all fucking gone. I wouldnt be as mad if it was just the complete voice cast change and the terrible artsy op but its like they didnt even fucking try to make the show have any remaining quality compared to the 1st season. Its not like the new studio didnt know how to make a darker toned show either, its fucking Artland, they made Mushishi, what the fuck man. at least the cars arent cg i guess

Any oldfags here know details on what the fuck happened? How can a 2nd season so badly comprehend what made a show good? I dont think i've seen such a jarring change in tone in any anime ever.

I heard Tobikage had like no budget and they were forced to reuse a lot of scenes, but man that shit is just comically bad. There's actually a scene where thier fighting in a snow field and it cuts to a reuse shot in the desert they always fight in.

The thing I miss most is shots that made use of the actual physical camera. Pans, zooms, focus and refocus shots had a ton of soul when physical cells were actually moving or the camera was actually zooming / refocusing. The little jitters and judders it adds made you intensely aware of how human it all was, and more importantly, emphasized how high quality the art was. The manga author complained that the first season was very different from the manga. Teatrino (S2) was made to be specifically as close as possibile to the original manga in style, pacing, art direction etc.
