Especially kizu, though the fights were interesting, changed too much of the style and felt extremely rushed (though maybe that was intended...). It's kind of crazy to think that the best fight of the trilogy was against the weakest member while araragi's running like a bitch half the time. Quite the disappointment. Though I had no problem with the more calm and exposition-heavy scenes, they were still... inferior.
I liked nise because it took on the artistic and conversational style of bake, but the phoenix episodes also felt quite empty. It seemed like more of a mimic than it's own thing.
I guess what I want to know is, when did the series truly peak according to you? Or what the consensus is.
It'd be kind of a disappointment to see nothing else be quite as good as baki.

Tsubasa is gonna be the focus next so we just get a bit of a glimpse of her in Nise. Karen and Tsukihi viewed as cases are also closed, though again the important part is how Araragi begins to view things going forward. I will never understand why people think Nise is weak just because it's not as focused. It can both serve as an epilogue and a setup for the future and glues things together very well without trying to be dramatic or eventful.

Bake was in part them doing random stuff to find what direction they wanted for the series. Kizu after, while the good watch order, may have felt a bit weird because it was a movie made a lot later that tried to parody Bake in some ways to feel more connected to the early stuff. I think Bake was originally planned as a one off series, or just it with Kizu. So they gave it a pretty big budget and put a lot of effort in too (although it is important to remember that Bake initially had a lot of errors when first airing that were only fixed later on). The fortunate thing though, is the latest Shaft works kind of feel like a return in a way. The newer talent have gotten a lot better and grew up on the original Shaft anime. At certain points I get the feeling that it's all just a bunch of chuuni inventing monsters and shit to deal with emotional problems and trauma. That everything supernatural is only imagined, serving as a device through which they solve their problems without confronting any of the actually ugly, objective truth.
Sort of like a play, where everyone universally acknowledges and pretends not to be in a play.
I guess I get this feeling because a lot of the time, the supernatural stuff does feel too "convenient", sort of like "I block your unblockable block", and lo and behold, our familial, existential, romantic troubles have been solved.
There are couple lines that would reinforce this theory of mine, but I'm not in the mood to actually go dig for all of them. Though the stylistic choices are enough as well.

The main recurrent theme seems to be Araragi having trouble accepting himself and being somewhat paranoid. Of course, that will never fully fix because it is a major character gag and pushes forth many arcs. It feels like Nisio is also building onto the idea of oddities being unchangeable, just adaptive. It kind of ties back into the whole mental issue thing. The issues that are present and unavoidable that must be addressed. Araragi and Shinobu will always be monsters (or at least as long as they keep their vow). I feel this makes conflict with those trying to suppress it unavoidable at some point. Maybe he wouldn't do such a storyline. But I don't feel it really goes against the point of Monogatari, mostly due to not being that related.

For those curious, I finally got the stuff about Kagenui's sister. Her name was Yowari/余割. It means "Cosecant", to match her sister's 余弦 (Cosine).

Araragi specifically comments on Shinobu being just the same (and if I remember correctly says about the same about himself). The entire arc is propelled by his paranoia. It is pretty obvious and one is missing a lot if that goes over their head. He is freaking out about last names in the typical way he does about things. He starts by fearing that it'd be wrong for him to erase Hitagi's last name (even planning a trip to a place that shares the name). He then also becomes afraid that Shinobu's name seal is weakening. So he comes up with the idea of adopting her to give her a much stronger name. This has the added bonus of helping her blend in. The adoption also ties into another key point in the story, him wanting to get Hitagi and Shinobu used to each other. He shows obvious paranoia about it potentially going wrong. In the scene where he discusses his future with Hitagi finally, it reaches comedic levels. He has to go as far as to talk to Hanekawa in his head over it. But Hitagi takes it all very fine despite his antics. There are other miscellaneous gags like this throughout too in typically Monogatari fashion. At one point he fears that he shouldn't have a gun despite it being part of his job. Another, he fears Hitagi is going to berate him for being a pervert. In general, he still acts pretty Araragilike.

>Gaen sends Oshino and Kagenui to the site where Tooe's car accident happened to gather information, saying it'll be vital for the project. Oshino ends up renting a bike, so the whole chapter is just them talking while she clings to his back (a pretty damn long chapter, too)
>Kagenui asks why Oshino doesn't just punch Gaen. He says he and Kaiki aren't the type to do that. She then asks why nobody else punches Gaen.
>Eventually, the "punch Gaen" conversation leads to her talking about her sister. Despite her family hunting immortal oddities for a living, her sister Yowari really loved immortal oddities for no particular reason. At one point, she went off to meet her oshi (the book's term, not mine) Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicidemaster and was promptly killed. A young Japanese child somehow meeting a western oddity leaves Oshino scratching his head, but he doesn't really bring up any objections.
>Then there's a stretch where they're just walking around near the "car accident" site and realizing Gaen's probably right about it not actually being what happened. Also Kagenui apparently has a probation officer.

The book's good so far, but it's REALLY hard to convey why in a plot summary. Tone-wise, it reminds me a lot of Musubimonogatari: Very grounded (despite the supernatural elements) with a strange melancholy lingering over it. But it's also got a lot of fun banter and really fleshes out the specialists as characters. It very much feels like a story of youthful ignorance that's all about to go very wrong for all of them.
