Baki Rahen
Jack has recently been posited as the polar opposite of Hanayama who is all inborn strenght an aesthetics. While fighting him, Mushashi saw an overwhelming whitness. "Nothing".
I think in Jack he would see "everything". Likely portrayed as a snapshot from a chaotic field of battle of his time. Everything happening all at once and none of it pretty or memorable. Sick and wounded men dying, ancient gunpowder weaponry going off, peasants stabbing one another with spears. The "true" nature of combat. Jack, even moreso than even Motobe will use every trick in the book to gain strenght. Let us not forget, he would even show his asshole if it meant winning.
Furthermore, Jack's introduction in Rahen parallels that of Mushashi in Dou. He fights the same jobber swordsmaster, he goes on to challenge the same castmembers as Mushashi did. His Goudou is a threat on the level of prime Mushashi, so more than anything, he would acknowledge Jack as his fellow "warrior", as in, a combatant unburdened by aesthetics, seeking only to "bite" the way Mushashi "cuts".

Interesting analysis, but if you're taking your premise to its logical conclusion, Musashi in front of Jack would see a black landscape. A different type of emptiness. Jack is a fighter born from despair.
>His Goudou is a threat on the level of prime Mushashi, so more than anything, he would acknowledge Jack as his fellow "warrior", as in, a combatant unburdened by aesthetics, seeking only to "bite" the way Mushashi "cuts".
I strongly disagree with this. Jack is still far from being on Musashi/Yujirou's level, and he uses biting as a means to an end (winning), whereas Musashi cuts because he likes cutting.
>>283166727
I wasn't talking in powerscaling terms, it's more about the storytelling angle. His fight with the swordsman and subsequent Pickle match really does mirror Mushashi's revival.
He is the same kind of a "threat" that has been unleashed on the Bakiworld.
In terms of scaling Mushashi was potentially above Yujiro, so Jack probably wont get there until the end of his journey, if ever.
>Uses biting as a means to an end (winning), whereas Musashi cuts because he likes cutting.
Imho that makes him akin to Mushashi still. He did enjoy himself, but it was also the way he went about getting fame/riches/fun. Been a while since ive read Dou, but i recall Mushashi talking about his cutting in terms of goal-aquisition on a few occasions.

Musashi enjoys the act of murder, much that he does the larp about his glory. He could get infinite glory by just existing and going on TV shows, but the first thing he does in one is the sociopath mode of thinking how to kill people around him, he is shown in the past being equally murderous with the headwear chapter where he cuts a dude in half.
Musashi's ideology can be defined in simplistic terms as:
"Musashi enjoys killing people with his sword"->"this is good and righteous because he is rewarded for it", even in the modern time his way of acquiring validation MUST be through murder with a sword.
Jack doesn't particularly seem to enjoy bitting, it is just a strong strategy that he has minmaxxed for because nobody really can defend against it AND his retard level striking and good grappling.
>>283167108
There’s an art to swordsmanship. Bisecting someone with a single blow is impressive, intimidating, and beautiful. Almost no one can do that, both in-setting and in real life.
Biting is what your little sister does after you twist her nipple. Jack is your little sister upset you can violate them at any moment and they can’t stop you.

there's a difference between being born in first world suburbia and going "god i wanna cut people to death", and coming from a time where sanctioned killing wasn't just acceptable, it was honorable, the basis of his career and lifestyle.

Kureha's body is likely better but not really that better compared to Retsu's, and while he has superior anatomical knowledge Retsu just dunks on him in terms of technique.
As much as Jack was an unstoppable juggernaut during MT I don't think he'd have it easy against MT Retsu either, then again MT Retsu was vastly overestimating himself and probably got even more careless due to his easy victory against Katsumi so he might probably get blitzed hard by Jack if he didn't want to humor him like he did with Garland, Jack's real feat during the MT was getting to the finals with next to no damage whatsoever compared to everyone else.

Retsu's an odd character in the cast in that despite his age he doesn't really grow technically or physically but only mentally.
Whereas Baki, Jack or Katsumi learn new techniques or come up with new stuff rather regularly throughout the manga, Retsu only really learns Xiaori from Kaku right before he's about to die, even during the boxing arc he doesn't really learn new stuff as much as he's getting used to fighting with a peg leg, on the other hand he has a massive mental and emotional growth compared to most of the cast, which is odd because usually that's something Itagaki does for the old fellows like Doppo or Gouki.
When you look back at all the previous arcs it feels rather strange, Retsu feels surprisingly static as a fighter but as a character he's one of the most compelling when it comes to growth, it's probably why he's so beloved despite starting out as an absolute jackass and ending as one of the most affectionate and cherished bros.

The thing about Retsu is that he embodies taking pride in the breadth and depth of his skills. In the Baki world, kung fu's various branches aren't just made-up bullshit and sufficient skill and discipline can make just about anything effective. Theoretically, Chinese martial arts already have a technique for everything across their myriad schools and Retsu's considered such a master that he's familiar with pretty much all of them to a degree. He lacks a few specific skills, but he's so adaptive that he can come up with a move to emulate just about anything. There's a reason he talks about how complete Chinese martial arts are. The biggest thing lacked until later in the story was Kaku's Xaori, but apart from that he has a ton of practical and esoteric skills at his disposal. Growing in maturity and understanding was far more important to his character than actually gaining new skills since he's always been a mystery box of seemingly endless techniques.

I think he was around 30.
A good deal older than Katsumi, but still a sizeable gulf between him and guys like Doppor or Shibukawa.
As for the chip on his shoulder, it's really a matter of perspective. His mentality opened up more and his understanding of his own pride broadened along with it as time went on, but he also descended into increasingly more dangerous spaces to seek out the thrill of challenge and to continue to prove himself and affirm that pride. He knew that Musashi was too much for him, but the changes he went through after Pickle inspired him to give it his all for his one true passion. For better or worse, he died doing what he loved, but had he not gone so far in that direction he could have lived to continue guiding others along the path of discipline and helped in Katsumi's endeavor even more as a mentor.
He forsook the future for the sake of his own ambition.

It's a real waste considering the most consistent Martial artists in Baki are a bunch of Karate Chumps, so the variety sorta drops afterwards. It's not like Jyaku or Kaku are going to come back any time soon and do anything cool anymore

Jack really isn't framed as being a "threat" in the same way as Musashi is though. If anything, Jack was presented as being much more dangerous than he is now during the maximum tournament. All he really does with his biting is make people bleed out, which is a non-injury in the Bakiverse.

The real answer is one of two interpretations:
1) He would have ruined the pavement by having his blood and guts spill all over them. He realizes he’s not as indestructible as he believed after being thrown and he’s going to be more mindful of his body’s safety in the future.
2) He would have ruined the pavement by leaving a bigger crater. Jack believes he’s indestructible and is going to be even more reckless in the future because he can’t be harmed nearly as much as he can harm others.

>The Ancient Greeks were the first Europeans to explore the world around them. The most notable of them was a boy named Alexander the Great.
>Alexander had his father, Phillip, killed, and took his crown for himself. Alexander believed that his true father was the God of the Storms, Zeus, and in his father’s name conquered the entire world the Greeks knew.
>They even say he wept when he had no more worlds to conquer. In reality… he wept when he was defeated by a coterie of Jomon wanderers, who sought to challenge the world not for worldly treasures, but personal enlightenment.
>The Jomon had warned Alexander of his defeat. When they heard of Zeus, they misheard it as “Susanoo”. They then called Alexander “Takeminakata”, and laughed.
>Enraged, Alexander challenged them to a personal duel. One of the Jomon gladly accepted, and called himself “Takemikazuchi”.
>It was as if the kami themselves fought that day, and it ended the same: The Jomon crushed Alexander’s arm like a reed using a martial art unheard of by Greece: Sumo.
>Defeated and humiliated, Alexander fell into a depression, and died far from home. History says he starved himself from the loss of his male lover, for that is less humiliating to Greece than the defeat of their hero by the wandering Jomon.
>However, Greece did have some humility. From the Jomon they learned sumo, which devolved under the Greeks into Greco-Roman wrestling.
>This was performed by the Greeks at their Olympic Games to honor their gods.
>One god was the God of the Sun, Helios.
>According to the Greeks, Helios burned the wax wings of a boy named Icarus, because he did not heed his father’s warnings about flying too close to the sun.
>The wax holding the feathers together melted, and Icarus fell to his death.
>So, too, did Jack Hanma fall, as blood gummed up the mechanism holding his glider together.
>For Jack did not listen to his father’s warnings of asking Hector Doyle’s mechanist to operate on him.

Not really, his death against Musashi was done right. Remember he still feel grief over being unable to put his all against Pickle, as in he wasn’t willing to face death to win
The boxing arc was him slowly coming to term that he is not perfect , and against Musashi he was able to overcome the mental barrier that is his own fear. Sad that it turned into cockiness but he have always been an unruly cocky child (read his debut). Itagaki didn’t just randomly kill him off for fun

I just like to think how impressive it is, despite being a fighting manga, Musashi is the first one to truly have battle instinct. Everyone started with a fixed skill set, but Musashi quite literally just came up with things as he learn all the movement of his opponent, so he is super flexible
Vs Hanayama for example, the first hit Musashi get to see Hanayama fighting method, the second one (when he tried to cut through his forearm), he get to feel how tough Hanayama is. That alone let him devise a perfect strategy to make him kneel

>During the Colonial Americas, Europeans would import captured African soldiers to the fledgling United States.
>These warriors, proud and fierce, were subjected to the most cruel physical punishments possible.
>Whipping, stoning, forcing them to work in fields under a scorching sun, and carrying loads equal or greater than their body weight were common treatments of these forced slaves.
>Yet, not a single African warrior wept nor pleaded, for these challenges made them stronger, faster, and more powerful.
>It wasn’t until General Toussaint Louverture, a self-taught tactical genius and former slave, began and succeeded with his Haitian Revolution that the Americans realized their mistake.
>They had imported and stupidly conditioned a foreign fighting force within their own territory.
>Mere hours before the African soldiers could fight for their liberty, Southern plantation owners attempted to dehumanize and conquer the Zulu fighting spirit.
>The white men called it… “buck breaking”.
>By forcing men to submit, the rebellion that had been planned in the United States was quelled… for a time.
>Frederick Douglass, a black American and abolitionist, eventually served as the United States Minister to Haiti.
>While there, he begged the Haitians to reveal the secret of their success in earning their freedom.
>”It is simple… to counter buck breaking…”
>”… one must learn how to bite… with their ass.”
>To this day, black men jealously guard their secret defense.

>There is one event that has left a strong impression on my memory.
>That was in 2014 when I spoke to Itagaki-sensei, author of Grappler Baki.
>At the time, Itagaki-sensei was finally ready to relaunch the Baki series and start a new series after a year long break. To the surprise of fans, the serialization of Baki-do, which revives 'Musashi Miyamoto' using cloning technology and pits him against modern-day Baki and his friends, has begun.
>One day, over the phone, I was suddenly asked:
>Mr. Itagaki: "Saito-chan, Do you know what Halo 4 is?"
>Saito: "Eh...?You mean that foreign game...?"
>Mr. Itagaki: "Yeah, yeah, yeah... that Halo background art. It's amazing. I'd love to incorporate it into Baki!"
>Saito: "……!!?"
>Mr. Itagaki "So, I' m going to revive Musashi Miyamoto, aren't I? Can you make the underground facility there like Halo? I'll send you the setting references now."
>I was immensely impressed by so much. Halo is indeed a very well-known overseas title, but in Japan it had not yet become a big topic of conversation, and even more so when Itagaki-sensei, who was almost 60 years old at the time, was impressed by Halo's game graphics and decided to use it.
Halo is strong...
What is strong?
It was never explained to us. "Strong is beautiful", but is strong an aspect of beauty inherently to anything else that is beautiful? Is a painting or a sculpture strong just as it's beautiful? Is the strongest father and child fight also the most beautiful? "Being strong is marvelous", yet, what is "marvelous"? Is strong a concept by itself or is it an amalgamation of other parts? When one is strong, he could be skillfull and mighty amongst his peers, yet is the one with greater skillfull and mighty stronger than, you could say, the one who has great resilience and will? Is Iron Mike stronger than Chiharu? Is Pickle more beautiful than Jack?
What is strong?

Must be towards the beginning of the second manga, New Grappler Baki.
A quick google search gives me chapter 39 of that manga as "Kaoru Hanayama Versus Spec, the Final Showdown!!", so a few chapters before it should start.
Did the convicts (or I guess just spec and maybe dorian since the others turned out to be bitch niggas later on) fit the criteria of a warrior as defined by motobe and musashi?
Like musashi they fought to kill or gain something from killing their opponent, their fights were 'anything goes' and they preferred using weapons to actual martial arts.

I don't know, did they really "get something" out of it? They were still just fighting for the joy of it. But yeah, I think the central theme of Musashi Dou is kind of retreateing the theme of the inmates.
Really, Baki is a story about retelling the same three or four messages over and over again.

As ive read more and more stories, i noticed the best ones tend to be about a few strong core messages which are then examined and displayed in creative ways.
Jack v Hanayama rethreads a ton of points already covered by most of Hanayamas fights from the past, but the sheer juxtaposition of the two makes it a standout moment regardless.
My favourite "tick" of Itagaki is when he reluctantly describes characters as fat or obese before backtracking immediately and stating that they are just that bulked up with muscle it looks like morbid obesity.

My fav part about Retsu'a boxing miniarc was his fight against Smokin' Joe.
You really could feel the respect Retsu had for a hardened fighter, even if he set out to discredit his martial art of choice.
I also don't think Retsu hated boxing, he just wanted to show the world that they can, and should attempt to build on top of his four hundred years, same way he does with karate practicioners.
It was more like, "I respect your martial art, but it's still in its infancy. Please be inspired by, and grow thanks to my martial arts, which have long been completed."

Motobe v Jack is one of the peaks of the series for me.
I love how Memtobe keeps glazing him throughout his no-diffing.
He really loves the fighters of the Bakiverse. It sells the idea that his protection isnt born of ego, but love...
One panel that always stuck out to me was this. It's incredibly poetic in spite of not saying much beyond a literal description of the scene.
>Even on his knees... He's still huge.
It's Motobe acknowledging that fighters like Jack, even in defeat are a sight to behold. It tells us a lot about his own personal philosophy. In his "acceptance" of defeat, he's an outsider to the cast. It showcases his warrior mindset. He's the ultimate doubtGOD. For him, every fight is uncertain and potentially lethal, and even Ogre isn't exempt from the chaos of the battlefield. That's why he approaches every battle with a killing intent, and that'a why he was able to win against Mushashi.
Not to glaze too.hard, but truly, no other fighting manga could approach these ideas in that way.
Cant wait for animeonlies to be graced with GODTOBE.

I don't even like Hanayama generally speaking as a character but I have to concede he has some of the best fights in the series.
Spec was always cool though.
I know he's kind of disregarded as a monster of the week jobber now but I still think he's terrifying. He must have been even moreso when that fight was first published because up till that point he was depicted as unstoppable with baki noting similarities to his father. Obviously in retrospect he was talking about bloodthirst or aura or whatever rather than strength but still.

Rahen is all about Jack but do you think we'll even get a fight between him and Yujiro?
It seems very Itagaki-esque to blue ball us at the end with some obtuse philosophical reasoning as to why there was no need for a fight at all.
Does Jack even want to fight him? Avenging his mother's rape seems to have been forgotten and he craves Yujiros approval now for some reason.
Even if he just wants to prove his strength then wouldn't Baki be his target since Baki "beat" (lol) Yujiro, thereby becoming the current strongest creature?
This last string of fights has been pretty lackluster desu but I really want to see how it ends and get some closure to these questions.

Animes rarely adapt character design over the episodes. That's just not how anime is produced. The animators learn to animate one character from templates, then use that template throughout the series. They usually do not alter the template as they go on, something that is much easier to do for a mangaka.

We all know Itagaki is a fightbrain, but I wonder if he's a big reader outside of that. I was reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and thought that it might have inspired both Dorian and Speck from the convict arc.
Dorian Gray is man who doesn't age after having a cursed portrait made of him that reflects his inner evil, the portrait becomes uglier as he commits evil, but he remains the same. Culminating in a finale where he realizes his evil nature and kills himself, causing the painting to return to his young form but causing his real body to rot into how his picture had. His characteristic as a hedonist that doesn't want to accept defeat reminds me of Dorian Kaioh, while his death and immortality is reminiscent of Speck aging after his defeat. Dorian Kaioh even goes on to become a painter, which is on the nose if Itagaki was leaning into it for the reference (although Dorian Gray isn't a painter, he just has a magic painting commissioned.)
Either that or Itagaki was just inspired by Dorian Yates when he came up with the name and he's truly a muscle brain that doesn't read outside of fighting books. Not unexpected because of Sergio Oliva, Gary Strydom, and all that.

I really like that Itagaki is sticking to his guns with Hanayama. He isn't altering him and doesn't feel any need to improve or explain him, Hanyama just remains as archetypical as he always was. This fits very well with Itagaki's writing style of taking something ridiculous, exaggerating it further while still adhhering to the logical framework of the initial situation, then pulling the rug by, for example, having a character point out how ridiculous this was in the first place. With Hanayama, you know what you get, every time, but Itagaki has a certain skill to make that thing interesting every time.

I'm the anon that brought up the Dorian thing, different from the German anon. I'm a Hanayama hater, I think he's cool but overdone. He always brings up his back tattoo, he's always aura farming, and I just think at this point it's lost some charm. I'm massively biased towards Jack, the exact opposite of Hanayama, he's always evolving himself and never gives up till he's completely unable to fight.
On the subject of /lit/ some my favorite works are The Kite Runner (not because of the anal rape), The Metamorphosis, The Book of Five Rings, and The Art of War. As you can tell, it's because they all have "The" at the start of their titles.

It definitely reflects the writing style of both works, Kengan is a story about fighting for, as in people fight for a goal. Baki on the other hand is about what fighting even is. A philosophical take on the meaning of fighting, winning, losing, and all that.
When a fighter loses in Kengan everyone calls him a jobber and edits him with a silly smile, when a fighter in Baki loses, everyone's discussing what it means for their philosophy. Things like Hanayama remaining standing even in defeat, Jack's constant Pickle rematches, Yujiro just ceding the win to Baki, are all things that don't just make a character a "jobber" deserving of ridicule (but we do love making fun of shit like the Jack cheek pinch).
Anyway writing these long posts is mad gay, I'm gonna go snooze now. Love you guys.
>>283221841
Thanks. He is talking about something that Nietzsche "supposedly said", atleast according to google translator. So I'm unsure if this means he actually read Nietzsche, or if he just read about Nietzsche.
He is talking about Nietzsche's re-evaluation of values, from what I can tell, and applies that to how he writes stuff by giving new, unexpected meaning to something that most people would believe to already thoroughly understand. It's an interesting take, mostly because when you think "Itagaki read Nietzsche", your first thought might be about the Übermensch, the will to power and that kind of jazz. It's oddly in-character for Itagaki, though, that he would focus on such a delicate aspect instead.

>Grappler Baki wa BL dewa nai ka to Kangaetsuzuketa Otome no Kirokutsutsu
>The story is based on an essay by BL researcher Junko Kaneda, in which she interprets the manga series "Baki" by Keisuke Itagaki as BL. The story follows the protagonist Akane Kojima, who hides her passionate love of BL, as she discovers the intense BL potential of the manga "Grappler Baki" and becomes obsessed with her fantasies for 30 hours a day. In addition to Matsumoto, Amane Okayama and Fuju Kamio also feature in the cast.

Would've beaten Jack if he didn't lose his pinky in a fluke attack, Jack should've removed his teeth to equalise the fight but he didn't so it doesn't count
Would've beaten Baki if Baki didn't cheat
Would've beaten Yujiro if he bothered to use his ancient anti-demon exorcism training, can call this one a draw I guess
He's just below whatever tier Kehaya is on basically

This whole arc made me want Itagaki to do more fights between armed opponents
The ending of Retsu v Musashi dominates all discussion about it but the choreography of it felt really unique compared to most fights in the series I thought, it was cool

The Japanese are weird like that. Araki likes bishounen men, Morikawa likes big dick jokes, and Itagaki likes men doing the gayest shit possible unironically.

Akira Miyashita might have had the most bizarre runs of works. Going from Otokojuku to that demon king manga that starts with the protagonist fucking a horse, and then turning into a stealth Otokojuku sequel where the protagonist gets kidnapped to assassinate Prime Minister Momotaro, who the villains try to frame as Gay so thst he resigns from office.
Seriously what the fuck did Jack mean by this?
Why didn't he say I was stronger or I was weaker.
Is it something about uhhh so he won the fighting contest but I won the I kill you contest?
Maybe Jack should just embeed metal claws to his knuckles, shin and knees next if that puncturing his opponent until he bleeds out is gonna be his strategy going forward.

You are the police man, anon. You don’t get what Jack is saying, so what you’re interpreting is exactly what it looks like. Jack got knocked down, and Hanayama bled out. It’s settled. That’s it.
>>283229494
I think it means the discussion reached the zenith and fizzled out. Hanayama "lost", and Jack was made to look like a bitch.

But what was the objective of the fight?
To "defeat" the other guy or to "look like the winner", what was proven by the fight? That anything goes for Jack as long as he can "win" even if he looks like a bitch while doing it?

It wasn't about weaker or stronger, it's about the idea of settling something. I think it goes for real life as well, Jack vs Hanayama is a fight people wanted for years. So having the "winner" open for interpretation fits well, Jack won, but lacks dignity, Hanayama lost but humiliated Jack. That and losing once doesn't mean you're weak, look at Oliva and Sukune.

The salient irony of Jack vs Hanayama is that he could have probably still won if he just fought "normally", but chose not to because he really wants to live by the "death by a thousand cuts" epithet.
That's why he will always be Baki's inferior, because he knows it takes only one hit to end a fight.

You sometimes see this in media focusing on fights, manga in particular, where author has a "concept" he wants to execute for a particular fight and because of that he makes characters act a particular way - they do things that they shouldn't (considering their intelligence or lack thereof) or don't really use the abilities they've been established to have because that would go against the "concept".
I think Jack vs Hanayama was one of these fights to a degree. Personally, I don't find is as jarring in Baki because it has a lot of fights like that and to me it's part of the charm at this point.
