As others have pointed out, the second season is a mess and drags the show as a whole down. Quiet Zero makes no fucking sense. Why does Guel get so much screentime when he's not one of the two main characters? Why did they hype up the Schwarzette only for it to appear in less than a full episode? Why does Suletta have no agency and basically no character growth? Why did Nika get basically a slap on the wrist for committing serious fucking crimes? Fuck, why do Nika, El5n, and Norea spend basically the entire second season trapped in a storage room with no interaction with the rest of the cast?

It was an absolute trainwreck of an ending, worthy of Okouchi's previous trainwrecks. I suppose I shouldn't have expected better from the guy who wrote Code Geass R2.

Not really, it literally never takes off. Usually the duels would be just a way to establish why these kids know how to pilot giant robots and then they would all be involved in the horrors of war.

Instead this is purely yuri bait (which is the only enjoyable part of it) and school life, and duel after duel after duel until some marginal kids that can´t afford education go full columbine and things really get serious... except they don´t. You have like one real fight at the end of season 1, Miorine snapping against the Tanuki for taking reasonable measures given the circumstances to save her life, then more nothing burger, and then a "ah yeah, the tanuki is a clone because this is technically a gundam show, at least that´s what says in the title" and a forgettable ending.

It was shit. It made Iron Blooded Orphans look like Shakespeare in comparison.

It's actually an exceptionally cool setting, if you think about it. It's basically some hyper-corporate AnCap sci-fi setting where the major companies are nation-states unto themselves, with what's essentially an indepenent military force ruled by a dictator keeping the peace between them out in space, while Earth has been reduced to a ghetto. And all the individual companies were neat: Jeturk, Grassley, and Peil all had their own unique tech, and all their stuff, including their mobile suits, had a unified design language unique to them.

It was an extremely cool setting and it sucks that the show set in it was so shit. I actually wouldn't mind them taking another crack at the Ad Stella universe, I'd like to see it again with a better show.

That's actually not even how the setting itself works, as the lorebook and manga itself counters this. Corporations have power and influence in politics, but they're not on the level of nation states. Both Earth and space have independent governments that are separate from corporations themselves. The corporate "armies" are pretty much just a private security force, that mostly guards their fronts and assets, and occasionally performs counter-terrorism (or eliminates their rivals). Even Benerit is just one of the many conglomerates in the setting. It's influential, but it has many different rivals, and most of its influence is stuck at Lagrange 4, where the school itself is. Space itself is officially governed by Lagrange governments and the Space Assembly League. Similarly, Earth still has nation-states, economic and administrative blocks and regions, and multiple separatist forces and states. All of these different forces have their own armies, who are the people the corporations create MS and MC for. Earth is like the third world, but living there does not suck for your average Earthnoid, as Earth has its own rich and poor areas, its own corporations, and so forth. Even the terrorists we see in the show are literally just one small group of a couple thousand or so different terrorist groups across the setting.

We literally saw almost NONE of this in the actual show, except for a couple of throwaway lines here and there.

There would have been a lot of interesting stuff to work with, that the show itself clearly wanted to do and could only allude to. For example, Sophie and Norea aren't even members of Dawn of Fold, but Ochs Earth Corporation's agents. Prospera/Belmeria actually says this in the show itself in episode 19, but the lorebook confirms that they were "provided" for terrorists alongside the machines. That's literally how I realized that they were meant to be counterparts for Number 4 and 5, and that Olcott's Gund-prosthetics were foreshadowing Ochs Earth's existence (also he's apparently missing his benis according to the book).

The staff should have just stopped working on the second cour/season. It sucked.

Gundam fans want one thing. A space opera about two factions battling each other that seems very good vs evil at the start but as the show goes on you see what War really is and now it was all so black and white.
Gundam Seed did a decent job of this. Even Gundam 00 with it's multi polar worlds that then unites and it becomes more about politics and human development had it.
But then it's like they decided they just wanna fucking make trash.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE was total absolute trash. It's like the set out to make a kids show to sell fucking gunpla and the plot and everything was second of concern.
Gundam Reconguista in G was just Tomino skydreaming.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans was some retarded plot that nobody cares about it's basically a Gundam deigned to appeal to girls and get them into gunpla.
Gundam Build Divers is just fan jerkoff I'm not interested in that.

Then we get Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury again not a Gundam show. But I actually liked it probably because just like 00 it shows how exceptional technological progress can disrupt society and warfare, and how dangerous it can be in the hands of the greedy. I like it but it's STILL NOT GUNDAM.

I feel like Gundam and Gunpla is so deep into Japanese culture now after 40 years its basically their culture. Just like Tokusatsu shows I don't think you need to apeal to kids with a wacky new Gundam.

Its exactly what it needs to be. Kids already growing up by cultural osmosis know about Gundam it's not a new concept. You can't walk into a larger store that doesn't have them. So instead of making something new and trying to get kids to like it just USE what you have and show it to them. Make them care about that Exia or 00 on the shelf they've seen a 100 times when they went to Aeon, Yodobashi, Bic Camera, Yamada Denki, K'S Denki.
Just about every kids in Kanto Area has been to Odaiba or Yokohama to see the life size Gundam. Same goes for anyone in Kyushu going to Fukuoka.

The biggest thing I remember from G-Witch was how fucked it felt when nearly every villain got forgiven (due to muh Tempest ending) except for the Earth Witch child soldiers. Who just had to constantly suffer their whole lives before dying alone. It wouldn't really have bothered me in a more normal, gritty Gundam story where child soldiers dying is a daily occurrence. Just felt dissonant in G-Witch since you had stuff like Suletta crying because her girlfriend dumped her while Norea loses her sanity in a basement. Stuffing the dueling subplot in the same plot as terrorism just did not work.
