Modern Digimon has 2 gameplay styles world and story.
Story was initially a kids monster collection rpg like pokemon/monster rancher and the like, but with the 5th installment it started targeting an older demographic so it's more like persona/SMT/caligula effect basically a light novel/teen aimed anime when it comes to tone.
Most people would recommend with digimon story cyber sleuth and or the recently released time stranger which is doimg extremely well so far.
The world games are more akin to a tamagotchi monster raising sim where you get a single mon that you need to feed it, take care of it's literal shit and train it.
In world 1 for the psx you have an entire island that you must explore and fight your way through with the mon you raised and cared for
Not sure how the sequels play out outside of the monster raising.
There is a bit of a divide between digimon fans about which is better.
I personally prefer the story games, but I will admit that the world games are far more unique.
There is also a game called digimon survive which is a VN with some SRPG fluff to basically have a digimon game that plays out more like the anime(character driven plot where a bunch of kids/teenagers get isekai'd and need to survive with the help of their partner digimon)
That basically covers all the modern games.
If the story games interest you then play cyber sleuth.
If the world games interest you play either digimon world 1 for the psx or digimon re:digitize for the 3ds(there is psp version, but it has less content)
Play survive if survive sounds interesting to you.
The pre 2010 games are a bit of clusterfuck that can wildly vary in gameplay even within the same series(digimon world 1, 2, 3 and 4 were all different genres and redigitize was basically a soft reboot that standardized the world 1 gameplay for the rest of the series)
But like the anime all games are their own standalone entry
