I don't think the story was as good as the Dangan games, but the characters are great: Eito, Darumi, Hiruko, Kurara, Kyoshika, Shion. Funny enough the worst character is main heroine. Kodaka must've seen everyone complaining about how Chiaki was a Mary Sue so decided to make Nozomi even blander.

I think it won't ever be as popular again. I have a theory that once you pass a threshholds of quality you can't go back to low effort and expect people to be satisfied, and that goes for low effort Studio Deen animated shows. We do get those low effort idol boys and joseimuke shows and no one watches them. A new Boueibu season aired and nobody cared because no one picked it up for simulcast. Newgens just will not watch anything that isn't good quality and that's not released globally. Yuri on Ice was the breakthrough that killed fujobait sports ani after because once people got full homo, they never wanted to go back. A lot of shows after that flopped, except for Sk8 which had Utusumi and Bones animation carrying it, and even that was a fraction of YOI's popularity. But studios didn't learn from this success, they didn't try to make more homo in shows with stakes or with adults outside of cute boy idol shows. They moved on to shounen, which has gotten less fujo friendly over the years.
Studio heads don't want to keep up with the trends when it comes to fujos. We can complain all day about the reduced attention span and zoomer trends and it's true but also it's not going away. Companies need to adapt. Everyone watches the shows that get promotion and good animation and that have some sort of plot to talk about, and they don't want to do that with anything cute boy related.

The problem is with gacha that they pander to both and yumes are much louder now thanks to twitter where they can spread their ideas that they're a better fan than fujos because they don't their husbando with any guys. Titans kamille is being popularized by even official sources. It's fun to think about how a quattro ship would start. Kamille would definitely meet him at some point whether through a battle or otherwise. So they made two. The original manga is a lot more different. weirdly enough the movie is gayer than the manga. The manga also has a "chapter hiro" compilation manga that was made in the late 80s that takes the original manga and reformat it + has bonus scenes. it's a little hard to get but i asked a few booksellers if they had it and it's in the mail to me. I would say if you like the movie ten you'll like the manga. I would say it's not so much scifi than just war. the main cast uses fantasy bikes rather than something made up. similar to sukeban manga if i'm honest. if made 15 years later i would imagine yas to take more inspiration from that

Try not to get scared off by the music videos, to follow the story you only really need to see the transformation ones (they don't sub the songs at the end of episodes so you can skip to the stand alone videos, however ep 107 has one in the middle of the ep that is a response to dialogue so fuck whoever decided it didn't need subs in the episode).

I never read the translation and there's no official translation so I could not tell you how good it is or how accurate it is especially now with MTL being common. I did look it up and it seems like they only finished translating it a year ago so I don't know if it's just an MTL or if it's a true translation but I could always compare it with my versions if you feel like something doesn't sound right!
I won't pretend that I've been a fan of his for years at this point it's probably been about a year since I started reading all of his works. I think if you can like at least two of his works you'll most likely like them all. Moving on, I finally finished SaYe, a danmei novel series, with all the translated extras included, after a month or so of reading with plenty of breaks. Excluding the Seven Seas epilogue, the last two chapters and its extras are a bit harder to read since they're partially MTL, though they do give closure about a lot of the characters, so I felt it was necessary to read.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between the two male leads, and how it didn't shy away from life in poverty and mental illness. Do I think there's room for improvement? Of course. For instance, some characters were put to the side and never mentioned again, like Li Baoguo's two older kids. But it was at least realistic in some way, as there's many people in life you'll never meet again. And, the focus on the smaller cast did give way for stronger characterisation for the protagonists. So I don't feel too bad about skipping over them.

Overall, I recommend this to people who want to enjoy a modern melancholic SoL BL/danmei. There's plenty of insignificant moments about living in a shitty broken part of town, which for some, it might feel stretched out. But for me, it makes the setting feel lived in and...cozy.

Seconding the other anon, the scanlation does a great job identifying cultural references and historical locations. Also S1 of the anime is quite butchered, the voice acting is great, but it doesn't find its legs until at least S2, and several parts are relegated to OVAs you'll have to timeline check and reinsert yourself. We've got another missing arc coming in OVA form soon and it's one I remember really enjoying with /a/ when it came out. Noda's humour on the page is brilliant.

Thank you for the kind words, anon. I acknowledge that novels, especially multi-volume series, tend to not get discussed here much. Thus, I never went in with the expectation of getting many responses, if any. You don't have to pick this series, but I always love it when others sperg about BL they like, even if it isn't trendy to talk about here. A few parts are a little wonky but other than that its fine and pretty readable, though being fair my standards are a bit low and given the premise I can just pretend the wonkiness is a part of it being a creepypasta.

Illusion Hunter's actually one of the other series I was thinking of when I mentioned fujo audiences getting merch. They came out with plush toys of the MC's alien form, and the fans were shocked because they'd been making their own, not expecting the publisher to indulge them. Previously I'd seen a few acrylic stands, box sets with fake documents, or notebooks, but three dimensional stuff like plush and figures feels new. Beacon of Light in the Dark Sea and When The Third Wheel Strikes Back also got plush merch at book fairs, but they were much simpler (a whale and a red panda).

There's actually two! Weirdly the one that's less obvious, "What A Bountiful Harvest, Demon Lord!", actually has joke caricatures of Lloyd and Javier appearing as their ancestors. While it's way more a gag series than the others, it spells out that Lloyd and Javier were literally destined to one another's company. Since ancient-er times. Wild to just throw that out there in a Dark Souls pisstake comic. The series itself has only lightly suggested that the Demon Lord's right hand man owes his entire life to him since childhood and is greatly concerned for him behind his cynical exterior. Might get gayer, we'll see.

Continuing. Apothecary Prince I've found harder to get into. I think I might have said in another thread that the MC practices quack medicine and his whole thing is based around herb soups and acupuncture working on Korean chakra zones for realsies in the fantasy novel world. It's rough to start with because he monologues like it totally worked IRL before he got isekai'd, people just didn't believe his wisdom, etc. After getting further in he's using the Asrahan Core Technique to do silly shit with his skills and you do suspend your disbelief because whatever the fuck, it's magic, he can eat the red sunflower seeds, sure. There is such a focus on treating people and getting his extra life points out of extending theirs that he doesn't approach other characters very honestly. He's pretty detached. I know Lloyd was all about the money and it's a subversion on that, but something feels especially impersonal about this guy at times, and his male companion, a swordsman who could awaken into a world destroying monster if he doesn't play things right, is Lloyd-minded and only ever talks cash. There's small hints that he does care more than the wages the prince pays him, but I'm not feeling much. The Prince like-wise, has a smidgen of sentimentality about his relationship with the King, but not like Lloyd and his new parents.

The last arc of the comic's first season though? MC disguises himself as a chubby fuck and gets himself kidnapped by the forceful leader of a rebellion who has terrible migraines. The gay fucking spikes tremendously. In a very stupid gag manner, but it was the most fun I'd had with the series and definitely speaks of a trend in BK Moon's writing. I'd recommend it for that if you can endure past fake engaging a Princess (she needs treatment).

All this long-windedness to say that nothing can compare to what Lloyd and Javier had so far, but the possibility of a good ship in each isn't zero.

Noted. I think that Estate Developer also started out pretty slowly for me at the beginning. It wasn't until Lloyd's heart stopped and was rescued by Javier 30ish chapters in that the story started to pique my interest. It especially helped that the joke about Lloyd being ugly begun shortly thereafter. The comedic tune eased the story into a more fun direction, which helped a lot imo.
All of this to say, Apothecary Prince might get better from here onwards. It might be too optimistic for me to say this, but I have faith.

It cuts out so much that I dropped it quite early on. The story is about character exploration, yet I found the chemistry between the two male leads to be lacking in the manhua because of how much of it was edited down. Doesn't help that despite very heavy censorship, it was still forced to be cancelled at around 2/3rds of the story. So it'll forever be an incomplete mess. At least the art was nice.

Speaking of cancellation, I'm still salty that the increased Chinese censorship banned the live action and donghua from airing. Not sure about the animation, but the live action wrapped up production in 2021, yet never aired. Though I have heard rumours last year that the live action might be released in Japan under the (what was originally the Chinese live-action title) "Chasing the Light" (rather than "Act Wild/Run Free" in the novels/manhua), but who knows if that's true.

The future looks very grim for danmei regarding censorship, not gonna lie. The only way for it to air in China is to remove all romantic physical gestures like ABO Desire did, which despite showing a homo couple who evidently had sex, I've been told that they couldn't even show them kissing on screen. Other than that, the best way for it to be authentic to the source material is to air it outside of China in places like Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan, and that's if there's no licensing issues, which there usually is. This is my biggest pet peeve in adaptations whether it's novel to comic or comic to animation. Whenever it happens there's either a series composition staffer who is blind to social/emotional progress and only determines their priority plot points by visible events, or the editor/director must be incapable of isolating their plans from the full context of the source material in their mind. It's not just bad for newcomers, but for people looking to relive a coupling it feels especially hollow and dissatisfying, and brings with it people who view the overall title poorly from only knowing its lesser iteration. Seriously a death knell to romance fiction, but non-fujos must hate it too since it strips general action titles of understandable character motivations and narrative payoffs.

I feel those frustrations too. But honestly, for fujos overseas, the majority of danmei novel translations have been done poorly by inexperienced translators often heavily relying on MTL. It's only recently that we've seen an uptick in professional English translations, all thanks to MXTX's donghua really blowing up internationally. So I can't hate on those adaptations in their entirety, nor do I fault readers for going the better translated route, even if I feel that SaYe's manhua is hollow and unsatisfying like you stated.

The saving grace for SaYe novels is that except for the last couple of chapters, the translations were done by people who speak English fluently and Mandarin well enough to understand and explain pop culture references and somewhat difficult Chinese sentences. As a result, I never felt lost reading it like I have with some other danmei novels. Can't say the same for other danmei, especially if they cover less popular genres/themes ie. a modern setting.

Sadly, I think that licensing issues and China's firewall prevent these sort of leaks, lest they risk getting arrested. Wish there was a more robust way to circumnavigate that.

That's true, I hadn't been thinking about it in that context. It's easy to forget when with anime/manga you can often choose to do the adaptation first so you're less picky and the manga feels like bonus content. I admit I'm one of those who will stick with an official translation of a donghua/manhua/manwha for longer than a MTL'd novel, but I do approach them with the assumption something is missing, and sometimes that sensation is a good driving force to look into the original. I also used to read any and all danmei TLs without thinking back in the 2018-19 boom, the excitement overrode all standards and people were optimistic about how deep the emotions/relationships were. What troubles me now we have so much choice is that people will loudly write off a series based on either a bad translation or a mediocre adaptation. Suppose that's true of all weebery, but maybe I'm protective of the "newer" medium/genres since they're always under fire for one thing or another.
