It ain't as big of a deal to me however since I like the focus on characters outside the strawhats. To me my worry would be that with a series so long I feel like if oda kept his focus on them then they'd eventually start regressing. I do worry however that the bloated cast will make the final war terribly painful as he attempts to bring all these side characters satisfying conclusions.

These arcs weren't terrible and had plenty of great moments but the wider plot really drove to halt over these arcs to me. Now getting into the final saga it turns out Yonkos are in fact small frys and the real threat is way stronger. We also finally getting some of the many big mysteries solved too.

For me it's more the way it's clear Oda knows what he's drawing beneath the black blob. Imu remains very elegant and deliberate as a design under his hand but since Toei is just copying a formless blob with no idea what's beneath it comes out as deformed and monstruous. I disagree. Authors don't write evil characters with redeeming traits so people can like them without worrying about it. They have redeeming traits to make them different from other villains who are straightforwardly evil. It's variety. Plenty of plainly and simply evil characters are well loved by fans of the series they are in. Evil characters are often fun because they are evil, not in spite of it. You can find both kinds of characters that are popular; tragic backstory evil characters and pure evil characters.
Part of what makes Sommers so fun isn't just that he's a retard. It's that he's evil and loves the fact he's so evil. He thinks about it artistically and poetically. That's what gives him a fun trollish vibe. Characters with a tragic backstory are really interesting in a series where every other villain is pure evil, and characters who are pure evil are really interesting in a series where every other character has a tragic backstory (this is why I like Jagi from Hokuto no Ken so much).
