Why isn't this show taking off? It's got everything you could possibly want: great music, great direction, solid animation, huge...muscles.
With OPM Season 3 being a wash this show should be stealing that audience, what's happening?

Samurai Flamenco took off with a very similar pitch (if not actual premise), but maybe it directly referencing an existing franchise instead of building a parody one is throwing people off?

I don't know THAT much about showa era riders except that their costumes are way cooler than everyone else's but there's really not much to get. Kamen Rider is a good guy that jumps high and kicks. He fights ̶N̶a̶z̶i̶s̶ Shocker. The people in this show watched a lot of it and are kinda nuts, That's about it.

I think that's part of it. And yeah, the show is pretty understandable even if you think they're obsessed with some fictional series, its giving you almost everything you would need. All an intensive knowledge does is add spice and the knowledge you would need for a lot of that is almost as autistic as the characters themselves. Like you would need interviews with the original creator to get the joke for why Tojima is always crying.

That’s it. That’s literally it. People will watch the most mid thing on earth like Ninja Kamui as long as there’s sakuga in it. If you only watched the teaser of both shows you'd think they were the same but they're very different in tone so far.

Flamenco is...let's call it experimental. I honestly don't know if watching it today would provide the same experience without the week between each episode and the lack of spoilers.
In my opinion it was a pretty slow burn at the start, then it was amazing for a very short period, and then it wavered up and down until it crashed and burned.

Also it was extremely gay so if you're not into/willing to forgive the yaoi bait it's probably not worth it.

It's really worth saying just how good the direction is, the cuts being made and the specific use of music and all the little editing choices all really elevate the material.

The decision probably has less to do with Kamen Rider but is kind of a call back to the author's previous work Tanikamen. Toujima should be around the same age as current Tani, they have the same fighting style, tard strength, the mask and very passionate.

To be honest we haven't seen a whole lot of actual evil from these shocker goons (although the whole point is secrecy so that might just be them doing their jobs well).

So far everything we've seen shocker combatants do is:
1) Stop a robbery (out of pride, not selflessness, but still)
2) Live a peaceful undercover life attempting to maintain cover by bribing people with food
(and possibly spare both the kids' lives and the yakuza guys by ignoring the cry he heard)
3) Go rogue for love in a weird Bonnie and Clyde obsession and get taken out

So far the only actual thing they can be called out for is overkill when their secrecy is threatened.
As for monsters the Spider Monster did kill the streamer and his own combatant, but he let the protags live so he's not bloodthirsty.
Yukarisu seems to have gone native and is clearly about to betray Shocker in/after this upcoming fight.

I watched everything starting with the first one (1971) untl the last season.
Showa-era Rider are amusing on its own rights, and I think some of the theming (which becomes recurring in the series) is really cool, it's also interesting to see the cultural influence of those shows in other media, but really the "flashy" Heisei era are the best ones and it's not even close, specifically the shows from year 2000 up to around 2017 or so.

Ultraman is an example of a toku franchise that kept their designs really simple and close to the originals, but that also resulted in everybody looking kinda samey in my opinion, but that also reflects the philosophy of both franchise: While Ultraman is a stable/conservative franchise that tries to keep the experience relatively pure to the oldschool shows (most of the time at least), Kamen Rider is always reinventing itself with experiments with its ups and downs, nobody is going to like every season but certain seasons can vibe with you in a higher level than Ultraman (it's my personal take at least).

Talking strictly design-wise, personally I like how Rider plays around with designs, at least a lot of base/main forms still have a balanced creativity about them (especially when you get to know the season themes/plot) but yeah some "power-ups" can go very overboard in ways that I don't like.

I think you described my overall experience with Ultraman and Kamen Rider. I can generally finish any season of Ultraman because the quality is going to be mostly consistent. Meanwhile I bounce off of KR series pretty frequently after just a few episodes. But when Kamen Rider hits for me, it hits hard with seasons like Kuuga, OOOs, Stronger, and W. Those are the shows I go back to every couple years chasing that high. But the only Ultraman season I've rewatched is Nexus despite having watched both series for decades now.

I do want Ultraman to really experiment with things. But when they did I think it resulted in seasons like Ginga more than we got stories like Nexus and I hate the toy-line stuff on reflex.

Almost every Kamen Rider season during the Heisei era proved to be hit, with many of them being considered some of the best toku of all time, causing Kamen Rider to reach this legendary status ever since Den-O where even if a show is bad for a whole quarter, as long as a portion of the show is good, it's guaranteed to succeed financially. Couple that with Kamen Rider toys being amazing, the belt/trinkets have a lot of interactivity and they would release special editions and figures that would cater to their older market.
Ultraman would make copycat toys of Rider which would prove to be successful alongside making toys for older fans. They also made easy to acces subs early enough for it to matter and while the shows had lower budget for a while, most seasons from the 10s onward have been a visual spectacle causing it still perform well even though it isn't exactly doing gangbusters.
With Super Sentai their toys have been behind their competition ever since the 00s, their mecha just don't have enough playability or articulation when compared to Takara Tomy kodomo IPs, their changers also aren't that interactive as to not overlap with Rider. Pretty much the main reason why Sentai kept selling well for a while was because its legendary status, but when Yokai Watch got a boom cannibalizing the sales of other Bandai properties, Sentai got hit way harder than other franchises because it happened the same year the season before the anniversary season Ninninger aired, which is one of the most hated seasons. This made people have higher expectations for the anniversary show Zyuohger but ultimately the show ended up being really standard and from Kyuranger to Ryusoulger shows ended up mixed bags, so it kept underperforming. They also cannot distribute Super Sentai outside of Japan or make games that release on western platforms such as Steam due to the contract Toei signed with Saban for Power Rangers.
