AI would, in all likelihood, be told to forgo TL Notes since that requires more effort in the cleanup / typeset process than simply having a long sheet of dialogue subs.

No, because academic works are not entertainment works. Those are completely different worlds and sets of standards for translation, and I know for certain NOBODY here is treating anime like an academic exercise based on the discussions I've seen here.

>Guess how you can understand anime? With a tl note.
With good understanding of both languages. By having a good translator as well as a good linguist, someone who can convey intent and meaning without cluttering the screen and forcing people to read paragraphs of text explaining benign shit.
TL Notes for stuff like Hinamatsuri dolls or specific festivals, those make sense. Those are things that would need to be explained.
TL Notes for words does not make sense. For a meme example, not translating "nakama" because "It could not possible be translated" is fucking retarded, and that is most general word TL notes, it's shit that could be translated but either they were lazy or up their own ass working on it.
I do not gain a deeper understanding or appreciation by having that forced on me. When Seed of Might revised the Steve Simmons subtitles for Dragon Ball, I didn't need a paragraph explaining the intent behind using "Android" for the translation of "Jinzouningen", because that's not what the subtitles are for, it's not a dumping ground for those base level decisions.
If they want to explain those translation choices, that's what a txt file is for.
>I bet you shit your pants when people leave honorifics untranslated
No I don't really care about honorifics. Most of the time it's fairly needless in its inclusion though, very rarely does an anime make use of honorifics in a significant way that isn't conveyed through the scene or dialogue or voice acting.
