they're actually both good, it's just the VA for holo has gotten quite a bit older so she doesn't have the same youthful charm in her voice anymore, and passione isn't exactly the kind of studio that can do these vibe anime justice. also mostly hand-drawn sovl vs. sovlless modern digital animation and illustration. but we finally have new animated stuff past the second season of the original adaptation. The first season only got to about 2/3rd of the way through the original anime because they adapted volume 4 that was dropped in the original. So my recommendation is watch Season 1 + S2 Ep00 OVA + Season 2 + shorts. THEN watch the new adaptation 2024 S1. You'll only get an idea why people love Holo and Spice and Wolf in general after watching the original first. The visuals of the original are also more charming in general.

I really should get to watch the original anime and ovas though, I just struggle to stick with it because..I'll be honest here the whole premise is boring as fuck to me, following a merchant and learning about economics couldn't be more unfun to me if I tried, and while holo and Lawrence being a couple is cute it's just not enough sometimes, but hey I might go back to it since I feel like watching a cute wolf again.

if you do decide to download them, I recommend the [Spirale] encoding of the latest release of the bluray for both season 1 and season 2 on nyaa. they don't include the OVA though that serves as EP00 of S2, so I recommend the [WSE] encoding of that one. Anything older than these has low picture quality because earlier DVD and bluray releases for it were bad, but they fixed it with a later release which is what those encodings use.

S1 did well enough both on streaming and in terms of sales, and renewed interest in holo merch. if S2 is also 24-26 episodes, then it would need at least two more seasons after of comparable length to adapt all 17 volumes that matter. it's fascinating to see the change in just 15 years of animation history between the originals and the remake (remember the originals had two different styles between s1 and s2 as well). they are both charming, but the OG s1 was special in a unique way. You know, you have a point. It's something that tends to happen to voice actors as they get more practice. They lose that "naive youthfulness" as you say it and their voice get more stable and standarized so to speak.
Also, if you guys like Ami Koshimizu I recommed checking Ashita no Nadja, her debut role when she was 17. It's kind of a soap opera with 50 episodes, but if you like Koshimizu and want to check her beginnings and how she fared then compared to her current self, I really recommend it.
