It's certainly much more aware of the stakes. Humanity's plight is moved front and center and framed much more sympathetically. The villainy is driven by desperation and zealotry born from their situation then some childish misanthropic condemnation of humanity/advanced cultures. And it does still while keeping the aliens as the sympathetic focus, because they don't deserve to be invaded and other things I won't spoil.
