Does sitting near someone show them you're not afraid of them?

No. With social conventions, the person is more likely to think "why couldn't they have sat over there?"

I won't read requests to calibrate OP's sense of what is normal, on an advice board, posted by a formulaic, subhuman, autistic retard.

sitting face to face would probably have that effect, combined with staring would make someone uncomfortable pretty quick and make them confront you.

No dumbass. It just makes them uncomfortable if it’s empty and it makes you look like a creep if they’re a woman and you’re a man.

Wontler... how can you call others formulaic when I've seen you post this exact text, word for word, with the exact same retard pic, in several threads over the past few weeks? Come on now...

Yes sitting near someone is prosocial and so is saying 'hi how's it going/how's your day treating you'. Being prosocial shows you are not threatened.
You don't have to dig in for a conversation, that's annoying. What you've done is put the ball in their court and it's their choice if they want to kick it back to you

It's not the only strategy, you could also go for the lone ranger approach where you single mindedly claim space and focus on the needs of your ego. This one makes a pretty big splash and bonus points it works for autistics
