Yeah, around 2012-2014.
It was around the 2nd Obama term where things started to shift culturally, the media, etc. The 1st Obama term was still somewhat optimistic culturally despite the financial crisis. People hadn't given up hope on society, the tumblr crowd hadn't taken over the media and culture yet.

People use Gamergate as a milestone just because it happened to be a result of that shift at the time, not because it was that important itself. It was just a sign of what had already happened. The shift was happening anyway, everywhere.
