My pet bird, who I had for a decade and considered my best friend, died at the end of July. Since then I have been drinking almost every day, sometimes with only a day or two break in between streaks of drinking. So I am technically an alcoholic. Why can't I stop doing this? How do I stop? I don't believe in a god so not doing AA. Its not affecting my work life but I fear it will if I don't do something. I had a dream about my bird this morning and was devastated when I woke up.

I don't think AA has anything to do with religion.

God is very centric to their program, its all about doing God's will instead of your own. At least where I live

Look up SMART Recovery. It's like AA but less God.

I'm sorry for your loss, anon. I did the same thing when my cat passed. I wasn't ready to face the full force of my grief. I slowly stopped drinking when I was. It took time.

>Why can't I stop doing this?
Because it's preventing you from feeling grief. The problem is, until you let yourself feel the grief, you can't process it and get past it.

How do I know when I'm fully facing it? Its not like drinking makes me not care that he's not here, I don't even know why I do it fully. I can't even look at my pictures of him without getting upset. I love him so much. I can't describe how bad it hurts, not having him.

>AA bad cause God
you don't have to believe in god, just a higher power greater than yourself. that can be anything you want. a doorknob, Led Zeppelin, doesn't matter you just have to have one. my sponsor's higher power was AA lmao

I drank more than you for no good reason. If you stopped at all any days then this is rookie stuff.

Don't brag about how much you used to drink. Makes you look like a tool.

Sorry for your loss.
You should get a new pet. Maybe another bird, maybe go for a lizard or something instead. Having responsibility for something is good for you. Having companionship is good for you. Having new experiences is good for you.

Wouldn't a new bird be cheaper?
