Well bros. Real chance my sweet boy has reached the end of the line. He's in CKD (end stage) and despite everything I've done, doesn't seem like I'm gonna be able to get him eating again. I have him on fluids (was gonna try upping it and seeing if he improved but no luck), and on mirataz to stimulate his appetite but it doesn't seem to be doing it. He acts hungry but will only eat churus and such.

Any last suggestions of anything else I can try? He's losing too much weight as it is and I can't delay it much longer otherwise. I was willing to try maybe some other medicine but if he's not eating then he's gonna fade pretty quick given that he's already underweight and I'm not gonna force him along

She's gone. Put her down like an hour ago. I wailed like a siren. She bit the vet and did a low growl when the anesthetic was administered. I held her and told her how much I loved her. Only 8 years old. I'm just so crushed. Just 5 days ago she was trying to steal my spicy chicken sandwich from Chick Fil A again and now she's gone. I hope I did the right thing. She had congestive heart failure and although she was struggling to breath she still ate, groomed and headbutt me. I know I had to do it, and I know she wasn't gonna get better, but a part of me feels like she had more time. I dunno, I'm just all over the place right now.

Could really use some "this can happen and it'll be okay, anon" stories. Still feel very emotional about it. I hope she'll be like old, no permanent damage, still adventurous like she used to be and so on. But convulsing can't be good right? Or is there a good chance she'll fully recover and be fine, like the vet said?

Love them now anon. Take pictures, write down their personalities, play with them, feed them the foods they love. Pets have reminded me how important it is to take advantage of the present moment. You don't want to look back in regret. Also there's no reason that your cats don't have more time. Lots of cats live to be 20. Just keep taking care of them.

My first cats were littermates and they died around that age, not too far from each other, think it was roughly a year or so, though from different causes. The dumbass brother refused to chew his food and developed megacolon, went real fast, though it was the sister that went first, she had a stroke while outside and somehow managed to climb her ass back inside, but deteriorated super quick the days after. We had a third cat that we got later on after the others were full-grown and he's 20 now,. Though I'm pretty sure I just heard him fall down the stairs, he's been having seizures every few months and I don't think he's bouncing back from 'em anymore, so I'm starting to mentally prepare myself. Treasure the time you have with 'em.

After a big storm last week I found a kitten crying outside, wet and alone. I couldn't find it's mom so I took in in. We think it's about 7 weeks old at this point.

My question is: How can I tire him out with play when he gets so distracted? He'll be hyper and ready to play but only bat around the toys a few times. Then he'll suddenly stop and get distracted with anything else (cleaning himself, wandering around, sniffing, scratching, etc.), even if I wave the toy directly in front of his face. After a minute or two he remembers we were playing and bats around a few more times, rise and repeat.

I'll sit and do this for an hour and he's still not tired because of all his meandering and will cry if I walk away.

The only thing that keeps him interested a bit longer is "wrestling" with my hand but he scratches and bites the heck out of me and it hurts so I try not to do it. I got him a kicker toy and redirect him to it but he really does not seem to care.

After 2 years of chronic illness, including FLUTD and FIC (most likely from anxiety), we made the choice to put my cat down after the medicine to prevent/ease an obstruction on his urethra failed and even with emergency surgery, it would most likely happen again with a drastic decrease in his quality of life. I held him in my arms as they put him to sleep.

His name was Boots, and he was my first cat ever. We got him from the wild when he was 6 months old. He was only 4 years old. I hope when we meet him again, he will forgive us and that he knows we loved him so much, even if he was a major bastard to us, and his younger brother cat.

First, stop being a pussy
Second, flip them, elbow to ass, arm down middle, hand around neck. It won't be able to scratch or bite you and it works as a submission hold. Just, obviously, don't choke the fucker. My cat does it all the time and it's a fun way to play. If the other anons are right and you get yourself a companion cat, then you're in for a treat if you treat it right. I hope your shoulders are broad enough for its ass.

Hello guys. My cat has a lump in her breasts. Behind her breasts there is kind of a big lump that comes to my hand its kind of hard too not very soft. Its like very big and hard pimple. There are scars in her skin also.

Should I take her to a vet? Or its normal and will pass If I just wait it out?

>FFF triple for being so young

I always thought he was going to watch our kids grow up when we start having them. I was hoping he and his brother would be our childrenโ€™s childhood pets. I feel so robbed of that future, but what can we do now.

Take as many photos and videos while you can, so you donโ€™t forget the minor details. I feel like a crazy cat person, but I am so grateful that I took so many pictures and videos of Boots before his health declined rapidly.

I actually install bird traps in my catio so my gatos can enjoy torturing birds while not being endangered.
Its basically a bird feeder but with a flap that a bird can fly into but not out of. It stays there for a bit, living its idiot bird life, then when catio door slides open and the boys get to tear a bird apart over the course of hours and hours.
Somtimes I even get them a guinea pig to change things up.

I love coyotes and I love cats so I keep my cat indoors so my cat can live longer (coyotes or no another cat, a dog, a pissed off human who just replaced pissed on patio chairs, or a car would get him) and the coyotes wont get toxo. Coyotes with toxo are more attracted to eating cats, when they should be eating marmots.

If you are any different you shouldnt be allowed near cats.

My cat lays around in goofy positions, but yours seems to be anti-gravity?! Is she "laying" vertically??

>>4997047
Don't introduce them right away.
Quaranteen the kitten in a room with necessities (NOT you resident cats room), spend lots of time with the kitten. Put something that stinks like your current cat in the kittens room, and after a few days take whatever the kitten has been sleeping on into your cats sleeping space (not directly where they sleep) just so they will find it and check it out.
Some people feed the cats on opposite sides of the door to create positive association.

If your cat isn't marking outside the door or acting up otherwise, you can try letting them see eachother. Seperate at the first sign of hostility; yowling, hissing, aggressive posture, and etc...
Minimizing negative interactions is key.

Once they've met and not killed eachother you can let the kitten take supervised walks around the house.

The real killer will be that the kitten is going to want to play with your cat constantly, so you may need to maintain the quaranteen space for when your cat wants a break.

Bros I am at my wits end. My cats been with me about 2 months now. He's relatively friendly and generally stays near me wherever I go. But he's really touchy about getting too close to him. He will randomly walk up and let me pet him but only on his terms. If I try getting close to him any other time he will keep moving away, if I follow him too many times he will run further away. I haven't been able to trim his nails/claws ever because he won't sit still for that long.

Much more importantly his eye seems to have something wrong I think pink eye maybe but it's getting worse and worse and I absolutely can't get him into the carrier. I've been trying constantly for several weeks now. I've missed several vet appointments. He won't yield. I have gotten clawed multiple times trying. The "wrap in a blanket" thing is pointless because he's way too fast and he absolutely hates anything going on or around him. If I even slightly lift a blanket near him he bolts. Would CBD work? Already tried catnip but that was no help. I'm getting desperate for solutions now, his right eye is looking horrible.

Hi /kot/, something that's been bothering me for over a year: While stopped at a red on my way to work I saw an orange and white stray, a rarity in the godless shithole that is the SFV. It was walking amongst some parked cars on the side of the street. Fast forward to the next day and there's its corpse where a parked car would be, likely crushed by some faggot beaner who wasn't looking before driving off. I should have stopped to save it the day prior. I dunno, I'm just bummed about that. I hate this place. /blog

There should be plenty of corner protectors and things like that usually meant to protect toddlers. Otherwise nothing will stop your cat from brushing against things. Some people even have marks on their walls because some cats do it so frequently. So if it were my cat i wouldn't worry unless there are signs of damage like dried blood on the cheeks. But then the cat wouldn't go that far as that hurts.
Get a cat tree if you don't have one already. maybe allowing some scratching and jumping around will calm the cats desire for violent brushing.

Carriers are usually also open-able from the top right? Why not try to get it to sit in a in a carboard box of their liking and then put the cat with the box in the carrier? Maybe then even try wrapping a blanket over the cardboard box to make the transport into the carrier easier? Worst case scenario get some oven mittens and get the cat in there that way. Some of my cats are sometimes rebellious and i usually just slightly squish them into the loaf form, that also helps. With a second person manning the carrier it could work in one swift motion.

I tried to hide the pills on the food, it worked the first time, but no more so I have no choice but to restraint her and force the pill in her mouth. How much will she hate me because of that?
I don't want to hide more pills in her food because she is already eating very litte and the hidden pills (even grinded to a dust) are discouraging her.

I don't think that it will have long lasting negative effects on your relationship. I had to force feed pills a couple of times and they did not really care long term. Its at most like cats that don't like being combed walking away from you when they see you holding a comb. But even then its temporary.

Just make sure to do it properly and safely. Its easy to give too much liquid too fast for example. Maybe ask the vet for a pill popper or pill gun but be careful still as these can be used wrong and cause the same issues. Its just that it has a smaller footprint than a finger and should cause the cat less distress.

Take a big spoon and a little spoon. Put the pill between them, then use the little spoon to crunch the pill into dust.
Mix that powdered pill into the wetfoot, and add just a little bit of water so it gets a little soupy. Mix it up well, and put it out for the cat.
Also my vet puts all their medication in syringes that I can just squirt down his throat. No cat likes it, but its fast and quick, and if he got painkillers you'll get a lovey-dovey doped up cat.

some cats are way harder than others to give pills to. they'll get over it though once it's all said and done. I found that using the pill pockets only worked for my car when I put it in some dry kibble. otherwise he would just look at it and know. he's such a dry kibble fiend though, once he realized there was a pill it was already gone.

My cat has chronic sinus infections every month or so. I put her on antiobiotics, she clears up, then it just comes right back. Starts with some discharge, always in her left nostril, then sneezing and heavy breathing with worse and worse discharge, then to her eye and finally right nostril. Got so bad last time she stopped eating and I had to take her to urgent care. She has been tested and found negative for FIV and any viral infections.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I feel like giving her antibiotics is just a losing scenario. I've tried lysine supplements, making sure the place is clean including her litter and food areas, air purifiers, making sure her food is LID, etc. The vet wants to do a rhinoscopy because they think it's structural but that's like 5K to potentially find nothing. Cat is a rescue I've had for a year, the foster said she only saw a sinus issue once and it went away on its own and they had her like 2 months. I kind of want to get rid of her, but I feel bad about that (she's like 12). This is my first cat.

There is this old tabby/white cat with a massive back scar that claimed our apartment building's back yard like 10 years ago for it's power station that stays warm in the winter. He chases off any male cats that try to tread on him and every few years he'll have a new young female cat hanging around him, sometimes several, I suspect he has fathered most of the neighborhood cats at this point. First he had this orange/black cat hanging around him that I've seen pregnant like two or three times in a few years time, then he had a second younger orange/black cat that would come around with the first one a few years later, now he's always followed by a female cat that looks almost exactly like him except smaller with more white on the back, is he the cat Jozef Fritzl?

How common is it for male cats to keep females around them for a good part of the year? I haven't seen grown street cats in groups often outside of this.

If animals are good at any dietary discretion, it's not eating things that taste like a naturally occurring poison (most medicines are intolerably bitter)

You need to get your cat into a treat acceptance routine where they will just swallow treats with their head tilted back in preparation for the next one before you move on to pill pockets. Feed them a little less so they're hungry enough for it.

Got a couple of new kittens yesterday (brothers both 13 weeks old). They are doing well - I've got a "base camp" set up in my bedroom/ensuite and play to introduce them to the house (5 bedrooms/quite large) gradually in the coming days. The only issue is that they are favouring peeing outside of the litter box currently - the breeder said they were toilet trained without issue. What I have currently done to try and correct this:
>introduced another box into their space (total of 2)
>their food water and box were in the ensuite so I have moved both boxes away from their food and water into their big play/chill area
>popped a paper towel i used to clean up the pee into the boxes to scent it effectively
>moving them into their litter box after they eat, sleep and play
>reward them with a treat when they go into the box/interact with it
Any other advice you could give bros? Our last cat was completely fine and only ever peed outside her box when she was physically ill.

that guy is shitting you. my last neutered cat lived to fucking 23 and never got fat because i wasnt a retard and always spent time playing with my cat. neutered cats can stay fit even if they're locked in a box 24/7 and free fed, intact cats can't, that's the only difference.

you should always neuter your cat as soon as possible because 1: intact toms are behaviorally closer to vermin than domesticated animals, due to 10,000 years of evolving in the role of meta-vermin, and 2: the little anxiety boost/confidence loss keeps cats out of a fucktonne of trouble. every time a dog eats a cat it's an intact tom that pressed its luck if it was not simply extremely retarded.

Almost 100%. Cats run on pure instinct, and spraying is one of their essential instincts for not getting attacked by other male cats so they do it all the time as a matter of personal safety (they are not aware of this, and their sex hormones likely make them less aware of things and less able to think in general)

For all but the past few hundred years, cats weren't really pets. They were meta-vermin, a semi wild animal like the UK's garden foxes or new york's street pigeons. They mooched off the fat dumb city mice/rats in perfect harmony and didn't require humans to survive, so they never developed natural house manners. Nor did they ever have anything resembling them because they are not highly social animals.

You need to neuter a kitten because the adult cat that develops otherwise makes a really fucking shitty pet and is difficult to justify keeping around especially now that we know they don't actually impact pest rodent populations (the rodents co-evolved with the cats and just hide better).

Nobody replied.to my previous post, but does anybody have any tips to get them both reliably going in their boxes? We are still putting them both in there every hour or two, as well as after they sleep, play, and eat. It is day 3 and we still have them contained to a small area of the house - is it better to keep them inside this room until they both use the box reliably?

Absolutely don't neuter as a kitten like that person suggested. Pediatric castration causes bone issues in all species.

Can't chain them up or something? So you just leave trashbags out loose? Not sure how to not get a cat to not tear them open, if there's food in there he's going to go for it. Could try some citrus peel, cats supposedly hate the smell of it.

tl;dr My cat got away 2 weeks ago. Do you think he can still come back?

My parents have 3 cats, two females and one male (all castrated and vaccinated). It's a house, suburban. The two females prefer to stay indors, they can climb some trees or the roof, but they soon come back down. But the male cat loves to get out, specially at night. At first we tried to lock him up, but then as soon as we opened the doors, he would get away anyway but always come back. He has been doing that for 8 years, we even had (and lost) other cats through that time. Installed fences, got the fences destroyed, etc.

One time, he got out and did not come back for 4 days, then he appeared in the middle of the night with no explanation. Another time, he was lost for a day, then someone called, he had fallen in someone else's yard and couldn't get out, only the next day they were able to approach him and read the identification to call us. We lost a cat four years ago like this, he simply escaped and we never heard of him again, but he was young, this one is experient and smart. I'd like to think he just took a weird turn and got lost and as soon as he is in the neighborhood he will be running back to us. Do you think there is still hope for this after 14 days? My parents only told me about this yesterday, because I was very busy at work and they didn't want to bother me. They put a sign looking for him in the neiborhood's online group, but they didn't print out any pics, which I think they should, but perhaps now it's too late, I never hear of these things working.

It's not optimal, but I wouldn't worry about it too much, specially if they are sealed. Just check the exp date and keep an eye for any weird reaction, but I doubt it.

I usually keep those out of the fridge until I open them. If there are leftovers, I put them in the fridge. When I'm about to serve it, I boil like two spoons of water and throw it in to soften and warm the mix (also hydrate them a little more I guess).

I wouldn't say to do it as soon as possible. The ideal time to do it is when the cat has reached almost their full height but still in the lanky adolescent phase.
Or just check with your vet and see what they suggest, and if you have a kitten you should have a vet already.

As long as it is sealed up its fine to keep in a cupboard (that how it's stocked at the store).
I've never had a cat that would eat cold wet food, remember they'd naturally be eating warm flesh.
For a kitten I would suggest using the whole can (get the littlest cans). Just dump it in the dish, and add a tiny bit of water and mix it up with a spoon until its really thick and even with the consistency of a thick stew. The extra water will keep it from drying out and going stale too fast (and you can add a bit more water if it does), and the kitten probably wont be drinking a lot of water, so its good to keep them hydrated through their food.
Go ahead and free-feed the kitten through the first couple months, the little guy will be doubling his size month to month so you can't really overfeed them. And the best feeling in the world is a kitten falling asleep on his back, across your chest, while his pudgy little tummy gurgles.
As the cat gets a little bigger you don't need to mush it up as much, and you can transition more towards feeding times, but you can worry about that when it starts to level off in growth (6-8ish months old).

Siamese cats are kinda like that. Mine enjoys chilling in the same room as me, but not necessarily cuddling all that much. She likes pets sometimes, but is usually pretty fiesty and will bite you if you pet her wrong. She loves sitting/standing on my shoulders and will gladly hop up if given the chance.

She likes to sleep behind/on top of my legs at night.

Take it slow, dont give her too much attention unless she wants it and let her come out of her shell on her own time.

Got a Kitten recently. Was helping my mom try and find her a home but no one wanted her so she's been stuck with me for the last 3 weeks. Already named her and everything.

She's barely 2 months old and wondering what wet food is decent for kittens. Currently just got her Fancy Feast Kitten food and some dry food that she likes mixed up. She has a habit of trying to mix her dry and wet before munching on it and was wondering if anyone knew a better wet food that would mix better for her.

My cat just randomly and for no reason clawed the everlasting fuck out of my hand shredding the fuck out of it. There was absolutely no reason for it. He just walked up to me, walked away, then came back again and sliced my hand. I'm pretty fucking pissed. I see online people saying overstimulation or invading their personal space but I literally was standing still doing nothing and he is the one who approached me and just out of nowhere decided to claw me. My hands bleeding in several different places. I'm really angry. Wtf is up with that? Had him for about 3 months and this was a first.

Cats need to scratch their nails all the time, if they don't have trees or boards to scratch, they will ruin your furniture and you. Sometimes their nails are so sharp their pierce our skin quite easily, even when playing around. Always wash your bruises with soap and water immediately, otherwise it itches like crazy.

You can trim the nails if you want to take some of that edge off. Just look up a tutorial and be careful.

Usually I don't worry about it to much because a name will present itself.
My first cat I named dog. My second cat was an Abyssinian who was 95% fluffy tail as a kitten and hyper active, so we named him squirrel.
My next cat I was reading clockwork orange, and the phrase "kots and koshkas" got stuck in my head so I named the cat koshka.
My current cat was a super sweet kitten and no name was really coming to me, and I had been just calling him "buddy" and when I scheduled his first vet appointment they asked his name and I realized "buddy" is a fine name for a cat.
And ultimately it doesn't matter because you will never refer to your cat by name, its just going to become an ever evolving list of nick-names.

I see. It's your first time with a cat, right?

>i mean he'll like scratch it for maybe 15 - 25 seconds then stop. and only his front paws/claws.
That's how they do it, it's great that they have that. They also love those heavy rough door mats. If the cat is young, it's good to get him accostumed to scratching on the right things and playing with toys instead of your hand so they know how to play (eventually with other people too).

>i have tried trimming his claws before but i can not get him to sit still hes a wiggly worm and even if he isnt moving away from me he still wont stand still but like keeps moving in circles and stuff whenever i try.
It's quite tricky to hold a cat still, some are easier than others. Some cats are near impossible. But there are techniques to it, I like to sit on the floor, put them on my lap, hold them by pinching the skin from the back of their necks and gently press them down. It's hard to explain through text, either check videos online or just take him to a pet shop and ask for them to trim the nails and give you tips.

Otherwise, it's normal, he will scratch you many many times. I always have one or two bruises, it's part of being a cat owner.

Can they give him any medication to sedate him while he heals? I know when my boy had his first FIC attack, they gave him gabapentin that made him still for like 4 hours.

Probably a good idea to have a cone on hand too, so he won't irritate the area. If not, you can ask for a referral for possibly a cheaper visit.

Give the vet a call. Nothing I ever noticed before with my cats but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Keep an eye on it, if I had to guess it was probably a little bit of the shot that made a subcutaneous bubble. If the cat doesn't seem to be too bothered by it, and it doesn't get worse, I wouldn't worry too much.
Still, nothing wrong with a phone call to the vet.

It's hard to figure out what you mean through text, but could be that it got a little infected, forming pus. You can clean the area with some cotton, if it's red and ugly, talk to your vet, otherwise just wait a little longer. Cat skin is thicker than it looks and kittens often recover really fast.

absolutely

he's probably more towards the "impossible" side of the spectrum. He will sit still for a few moments sometimes but usually he will like, walk back and forth to rub against my legs or just generally keeps shifting his position and stuff. I've been slowly trying to give him treats every time he sits still and lets me push down on his paws. But still have a long way to go.

>He will sit still for a few moments sometimes but usually he will like, walk back and forth to rub against my legs or just generally keeps shifting his position and stuff.
That's just about almost all cats. Also, he is young, still a kid, he won't sit still, then he will become a teenager and run around, after a couple of years, he should be calmer.

>I've been slowly trying to give him treats every time he sits still and lets me push down on his paws.
Careful not to get a fat cat lol. Cats can be trained, but it's never like a dog, they are their own boss. I find a good advice for taming a cat is to never confuse him about when he does good or bad, it's specially hard when the cat is cute because we tend to side with the cat. What I mean is, if he does something wrong, say it with a serious voice and give him the cold shoulder for a few minutes, let him cry a little more for treats before giving in. Cats are a joy, they are crazy and cool and they love the humans that first care about them when kittens.

>i've been trying to figure this out but cant seem to do it correctly
Pinch your own elbow skin and notice how you don't feel much, a cat's skin is similar on the back of their necks. To immobilize a cat you press him down so his paws are in a bad position to jump away. As I said, it's hard to explain through text, but nothing life confidence to make the cat feel confident too. It takes practice and familiarity.

Cat tree with danglers. One of those thingamabobs with the 3 balls on the tracks they can bat around. Putting carpet on your walls somthey can climb around. Release or breed flies in your home for your cat to try and kill. Mice, lizards, or small birds could also work. I think there's robotic mouse toys you can also use. A good view out the window. There are lots of stationary cat toys that mine likes playing with. Oh yeah! And one of those kitty treadmills!!!

My cat likes those little ball-track things. One looks like a bunch of plates stacked together with ping-pong balls stuck in grooves so he can bat it around in circles.
Otherwise I just have a lot of toys laying around. He'll pick something up and play with it for a few minutes then move on.
I also leave out paper bags from my groceries. He hates those things, and he will pounce on it, then start tearing it into thing strips (he'll bite at one end, then hold it down with his paws and pull back).
I can only assume he really likes the sound and feel, sort of like cutting construction paper with scissors as a kid.

thanks anon for helping me out. and definitely good note there about fat cat. I will NOT overfeed him. I think obese and overweight pets is straight up abuse and despicable. I have him on a good diet but im definitely very very careful about feeding him too much. Thankfully he isn't particularly food motivated, he doesn't eat a whole lot anyways. Even when I leave food out he self regulates really well.

I use cats pride clay litter because it does a good job at absorbing odors and doesn't make me sneeze. Some cats don't like scents because they like being able to smell their own shit so keep that in mind.
I used pellet litter in the past but I wasn't a big fan because my late cat had kidney disease and it would stay damp around her piss spots. DON'T use wheat or corn based litters. Causes grain beetle infestations. Learned that the hard way.

I've heard this worlds best is maybe second best I might give it a try, clay just seems more messy and like itd be a dusty mess. Apparently theres tractor/farm supply stores that sell pellet litter in bulk like 40 pounds for 10 dollars

So my sister is bringing her cats over to my place tomorrow since she needs to leave them here for a day while she finishes moving things to her new place.

Thing is I have my own cat. She's just a week or two under 3 months old and hasnt really met any other cats beyond her twin brother and her mom prior to coming to my place. Sister's cats are both boys with one being a little over a year old and the other just about 4 months old. Do I need to worry about them staying for the day? I feel like I need to keep my cat held and safe to slowly get her cats used to her so they dont fight. Any advice?

If it's just a day, just isolate your cat from them for the duration of their stay.
No one is going to be happy about this, but no one is going to get hurt either.

Issue is we're using this to get them to know each other at least once cause we might leave them together for a weekend when my family takes a international weekend trip. I personally doubt a day is enough for them to get used to each other.

Personally I rather leave her with her mom and twin brother for the weekend since those 2 still live together.

Even if you manage to do a proper introduction, which would require more than a day, they'll become strangers again after some time.

Okay anons, I think I fucked up real bad. I didnโ€™t change my catโ€™s litter box for more than one month and now my cat doesnโ€™t use it anymore. She did pee yesterday afternoon outside but not once today (itโ€™s 3pm where I am). Did she get sick?

Yes I did do that yesterday morning. My cat seems to avoid it. I showed it to her this morning and she was able to defecate but no pee. Sheโ€™s been very avoidant these last 2 days, doesnโ€™t follow me anymore when I call her. Stays in one spot of the house, doesnโ€™t move and she looks very sad. She has the same appetite though.
I only could get an appointment for the vet in 24h, I know itโ€™s 100% my fault but I hope sheโ€™ll be okay.

You have to have the mindset that this is another cat and not a replacement for the last one. The last one lives forever in your heart but you can have room for another in there.

How do you guys keep the little water fountains clean? There's so many nooks and crannies in them it's hard to make sure there's no buildup or mold.

Anon you really need to change the litter regularly, even if you're sifting.
I sift daily, and change the litter about once a week. I usually just put an inch or two in the box and as I scoop over the week I add a little fresh litter on top, and then do a complete change once a week.
Cats want a place to piss and shit where they can bury it, if its just a shit and piss stinking box of rock hard piss-clay, they're less inclined to use it.
You also need to make sure every few liter changes that you're scrubbing the liter pan out with some hot soapy water and bleach.
The litter box is the worst part about owning a cat.

My cat generally stays around me and he'll do this thing whenever I leave to another room for a while or go outside, where he'll pick up a toy in his mouth (always the same one) and meow through it loudly until I come back or enough time passes, like 5 minutes. Sometimes he'll knead something at the same time or walk up to me while still meowing and holding the toy. I'm not really concerned about it but it's a little strange, why does he do that so regularly?

Yes youโ€™re right, this was my mistake. Iโ€™m just really worried, I believe she hasnโ€™t peed yet (she was outside but didnโ€™t move from her spot in front of the door, nothing in the clean litterbox) and weโ€™re 13 hours away from the vet appointment. My cat seems fine, she still runs in the stairs. However she looks like sheโ€™s lost in thoughts, she has a different behavior that her usual one. I really donโ€™t know if sheโ€™s hiding pain or if Iโ€™m just paranoid.
