Prior to the modern century the biggest asset was land. If you had land you had wealth. So they became utilitarian and used land as a way to entertain themselves between buisness or leisurely retreats while still showing off. This is how you got golf and trap shooting, if you could make an entire golf course or a trap shooting range it subtley showed you had a lot of assets to do it. Women however were excluded from such activities, so noble women or the wives of wealthy entrepreneurs did what women could already do with men prior by breeding and ridimg horses.
