We can never fully understand the internal monologue or true emotions of an animal, but we can make some pretty good estimates on what a happy dog or cat looks like compared to a depressed one. I have seen what a dog looks like in abusive conditions vs thriving conditions and the behavior change is night and day in terms of body language or interaction. It's not rocket science.
