Was your school a shack in the middle of a moor surrounded by sheep? Everywhere I look, others in the UK say they learned both North and South America. Leaving them as one big America doesn't even make sense logically if you're also considering Europe and Asia as separate. The isthmus of Panama is narrow and a perfect place to split the continents in two; Asia and Europe have no perfect boundary between them, especially not in the Ural/Kazakhstan area.
Also you forgot Antarctica, so maybe I'm just falling for bait.

I work at a wildlife rehab where i get to work with these goobers. so stinking cute, but man does a room full of them reek. only been nipped once, most of the time they just sit there with their mouths open and growl a bit.

The Virginia Opossum is pretty cool when you think about it.

Possums are the cutest critters but I don't care for rats. I think it's the superior cone shaped faces and the bigger eyes.

you generally can't handle an animal enough to wash it. a lot of small mammals will just die from shock, so it's better to not touch them at all. they're better off a little dirty. that, and they just stink! even a fully domestic possum would be a smelly guy, they're wild animals. dogs and cats have been bred to stink a little bit less but animals besides them tend not to smell very good.
