I had cats do this in the past. Tried filling the sink with foil, but they'd just piss in the foil. I filled the sink with water when I wasn't using it, which stopped one. Another then started pissing in the shower. Turns out she had a UTI, so might be worth getting your cat checked out if it continues after you try filling it up first.

My neighbor's outdoor cat just had kittens. They currently exist in his closet beside his water heater cause it's dark and warm there I guess. I don't have an apartment large enough for a kitten. It's an incredibly bad idea for me to get a cat just space wise.

I've never had a cat so finicky about their litter as this one. Even the usual stuff he has to bury his shit six feet deep, and then he will drag anything within the vicinity of his litter box and try to bury that too. I can't tell you how many times I left a pair of boxers or socks on the bathroom floor when I'm getting into the shower, only to notice when I get out they're sticking out of his litter box.

Could use some advice, lads. Long post incoming.

This kitten ran into my house the other day while I was grabbing a package. He has claw caps, so he clearly belongs to someone--but there’s no microchip and no one has come forward despite me posting all over. He's eating wet food and using the litter box, so I'm guessing he's at least 8-10 weeks old? I’d love to keep him if no owner shows up--he’s super friendly and I've wanted a buddy for my other cat (he's 8) for a long time. The timing of this all could not be worse, however--I’m leaving for a 3.5-week trip overseas in two weeks. I was already worried about leaving my older cat that long, much less a kitten.

I had already planned to hire a drop-in sitter, and I don’t mind paying for extra/longer visits for the kitten. Right now, I've got him isolated in his own room while I slowly introduce him to my older cat--but even though my cat has a very gentle demeanor, I would imagine they won't be comfortable enough with each other in just two weeks to leave them unsupervised together, and giving a kitten free rein of the house while I’m gone seems like a bad idea in the first place.

The best plan I’ve come up with is to keep him in his room during the trip. I’ve asked several local vet clinics and shelters and they say it should be fine, but I still feel bad about leaving a kitten alone in a room most of the day with only occasional visits. I’m trying to kitten-proof and enrich the room as much as I can. I don't have anybody that can watch him full time. Boarding isn't an option--I don't have proof of vaccination and there’s not enough time to get him vaccinated w/ a booster. Surrendering him to a shelter doesn't seem like a great idea either.

I don't have any experience with kittens, so maybe I'm stressing out over nothing. None of the options are particularly ideal, but what do you guys think?

Go look for someone who seems trustworthy on craigslist or facebook or whatever, idk, maybe an old lady who's willing to take him in for the time, but for god's sake, don't leave him alone in a room for 3 1/2 weeks.

Hope you find a good solution

bro don't leave him alone for so long just because you plan to keep him, that would be a very wrong decision. it could seriously damage him, being alone in a room for weeks is literal torture for a cat of that age. they need sensory input and company. if there's no alternative, please, just give him to a shelter as the last resort.

I think giving him up to a shelter so he can be alone in a tiny cage hearing constant barks and meows of the other animals for who knows how many weeks or months and having a good chance at not ever getting a home is far worse than being in a room for a few weeks. At least in the situation he's in he has a guaranteed home for the rest of his life and there will be the pet sitter coming for visits every day. He'll have room to move around, play, and sleep in a peaceful environment.
>>5022865
You said you don't have anyone who could take him for that period of time but maybe you can ask a couple of friends or family members to drop in and play with him a couple of times a week to help add more interaction on top of the the pet sitter visits? You also said you asked around and vets and shelter people said the kitten would be okay so I wouldn't worry too much. It may not be an ideal situation but it's a better situation than a lot of animals have.

shelters really aren't that bad anon, cats don't get put in tiny cages. they're put in rooms in groups, after assessing their personality to make sure they get along. no shelter in the western world would put a tiny kitten in a cage, kittens receive special treatment.

>At least in the situation he's in he has a guaranteed home for the rest of his life
You can't imagine how long 3 weeks are for a kitten that tiny, there's a reason you're not even supposed to take them from their mothers before 3 months. It's the most important time for their development. Leave a 2 month old kitten alone in a room for three weeks and you seriously damage it, most likely for life. It's literal animal cruelty.

>bro don't leave him alone for so long just because you plan to keep him
Please understand that I do want what's best for him, I'm not trying to be selfish here. I've only had him for 3 days (this being the 4th) so I've had very little time to come up with a plan (on top of caring for him, spending a lot of time trying to find his owner, trying to find a sitter for my cat/keeping him chill now that there's a new cat in the house, and trying to get everything ready for this trip). I have no experience with kittens, but the idea of leaving him alone for so long doesn't sit right with me either, which was why I wanted to get some second opinions.

The ideal, of course, would be for his owner to step forward. My original plan was to surrender him to a shelter if no owner came forward--I called a cat-specific shelter within hours of him coming into my house to start the process of surrendering him. However, they *just* took in a fuckton of cats from some hoarder, and the earliest they *might* be able to fit him in is a day or two before the trip, which is cutting it really close (and I'd like to try to avoid burdening them even more if possible).

When I explained the situation, the vet clinic that recommended the shelter to me said they thought the kitten would be better off in an environment they're comfortable in (my house), provided I had a sitter making regular visits and tried to enrich his environment as much as possible. The manager at the shelter agreed--now I'm also a little bit worried that they might have implicitly taken the conversation as "yeah I don't want to surrender the cat anymore". Most places I spoke to said I should avoid surrendering him to animal services if at all possible.

That said, my understanding is the shelter DOES hold the cats for 30 days before offering them for adoption--so I think it's quite likely I could go back and adopt him as soon as I get back.

>maybe you can ask a couple of friends or family members to drop in and play with him a couple of times a week to help add more interaction on top of the the pet sitter visits?
Unfortunately, most of my family lives out of state, and most of my friends live in adjacent cities (and are all busy people). They also all have pets (mostly cats) of their own, which would put them in the same situation I'm in with my older cat if they were to foster. I have one friend whose wife could *maybe* watch the kitten while I'm gone (either at his house or mine), but it's a real stretch and I'd kind of prefer to hire a professional. I have one relative who lives close by, but he's a boomerus maximus type (e.g. "cats are loners, he'll be fine on his own!") and it'll be hard to get any help out of him.

I guess what I'll try to do now is see if I can find any full-time sitters or fosters--like I said, though, it's unlikely I can get him vaccinated in time to keep him at a boarding facility. Failing that, I guess I'll try to press the shelter again. There's a few other shelters I haven't been able to get a hold of yet, I'll try contacting them again tomorrow. Any other suggestions/advice is appreciated. As an aside, this is probably a stretch, but would it even be possible for the kitten and my cat to get acclimated in the next two weeks? Would that, in tandem with pet sitter visits, be able to provide sufficient socialization? That way the kitten wouldn't be confined to a room and wouldn't be completely lonely all day--but like I said, I'm assuming giving him free rein in the house is a bad idea and that this all-around wouldn't work out.

Also, any general kitten handling advice would be appreciated--I AM keeping him in a separate room (full of toys, scratch posts, food/water/litterbox, etc.) from my other cat, currently, but my mom and I are trying to keep him in our rooms as much as possible. I'm leaving dry food out and trying to feed him wet food 3-4 times a day.

>A cat got bored in a room for a bit
The cat likely won't even care. They rapidly adapt to new environments. I have taken feral outdoor cats and made them 100% indoor. They don't give a shit.

The alternative that most cats go through is a choice between growing up from birth to young adulthood in a shelter cage before being shuttled off to a county shelter as an unofficial euthanasia (this is what no-kills do to non-pitbull dogs immediately upon intake btw), or hiding in a hole near a garbage can and lucking out by not being eaten by a bigger animal (sometimes another cat).

Ask any shelter, kittens are adpoted within days. Also, depending on where he lives, he could just pick him up himself after three weeks. Shelters where i live do that.

>The cat likely won't even care
You know nothing about cats. It's a kitten, not an adult cat. That's like saying a toddler wouldn't care about being shut in a room for three weeks because you could easily handle that. Please just don't comment on this topic anymore.

>It's a kitten, not an adult cat
It is a domesticated feline. They are dumb as fuck and almost entirely asocial. Again, I have trapped feral cats and made them into ideal indoor pets. I and family members have raised kittens in one room. It works fine. Cats are NOT people. They have almost no brain matter. They are asocial, instinct-driven animals. You don't even train a cat, you manipulate it without its knowledge.

I don't know why you shitbrained apes are trying so hard to ascribe bad intentions to me, learn to fucking read.

The very first thing I did (after checking for a chip and posting him everywhere) was start the process of surrendering him to a shelter. It was the shelter (along with another clinic) that suggested drop-in visits would be sufficient (all the shelters in the area just took in a fuckton of cats from a hoarder so they're overloaded and told me they *might* be able to fit him in a day or two before the trip). I didn't feel comfortable with that idea and earnestly asked for second opinions.

If I was just some asshole trying to torture a kitten, I wouldn't have asked about it in the first place. And, of course, I'm still trying to find the owner, but I'm very short on time and have been frantically trying to come up with a backup plan if nobody steps forward in time.

It’s pretty solid if you follow the instructions. Here’s a pic of it holding both of my cats before the tuxedo passed. They’re both about 15 lbs each here.

You have to boil the suction cups in hot water first before setting it up. We had to reposition it to the window that actually closes, but it has never fallen off and it was pretty easy to remove. Not sure on how it will do in the winter though.

Lately, I got a second cat (Kitty), because my dad's unwell and I took her in. She's old af at 15, and very skittish about noises/sounds/strange places, but socialised to other cats and they don't bother her.
The problem being that my cat (Milly) is an ex-stray who is terrified of other cats 100%. I knew it'd pose a problem from the start but decided to try it instead of giving up the old one to a shelter.
The main issue is that whenever Kitty gets the guts to come downstairs, Milly runs away or freezes up and stares. Kitty prefers to sleep in small spaces all day and comes out maybe an hour a day, and then when she does Milly just runs off. And sometimes growls if Kitty gets too close.
I've been trying to mediate their meetings and help Milly get used to things but it feels like it's not working. It's been nearly 2 months and Kitty is almost exclusively upstairs still, sleeping and pooping, since I feel like I can't trust them to be together downstairs.
What is /kot/'s advice, if anyone could help me?

Last week Kitty went close to Milly's bed and sniffed it, and Milly saw that happen, and she hasn't slept on it ever since. Maybe it's the problem I created by giving them visual contact too early.
The super avoidant behaviour is throwing me off but, in that vid he described slowly moving the bowls closer together, which sounds like it might work. Thanks anon.

Giving my cat CBD did not work at all. If anything he seems completely unaffected. Also he is being a total asshole towards me because I guess he's mad that I tried getting him into the carrier. I think something happened in his past where someone must've put him in a carrier then abandoned him because everytime I try getting him in to go to the vet or whatever he acts like I just tried kicking him out onto the streets or something. Like he gives this forlorn glance around the house then looks out the window all dramatically like he's trying to psyche himself up, then he gives me this look of complete and utter betrayal and acts super cold and aloof for days and days afterwards.

Cats sure have a lot of personality. And can be a total pain in the ass. I tried petting him and he grabbed my hand with his claws and just gradually pressed in harder and harder and wouldn't let me slide them out. What a jerk.

I've been unable to get him into his carrier despite trying multiple times for months now and every time he also ends up having huge distrust towards me afterwards which damages the relationship a lot. I'm at my wits end desu. Eventually there will be a real emergency and idk what I'll do

I've been thinking alot about things that many of us use to do that are now frowned upon. Like putting your cats outside at night. That's what everyone use to do and they rarely died, sometimes got lost maybe if they weren't trained to know to come back for food and stuff.

Remember in Garfield he'd get let out at night and prowl along the top of the fenceline. Remember that song Yakity Yak Don't Talk Back that said bring in the dog and put out the cat?

It seems to me deep inner city cats are really the only ones who should be kept inside 24/7. Cars always speeding 24/7, cat gangs, homeless, property damage looking for food.

Now let's look at the suburbs which is where Garfield lived. Less cars so it's safer in the middle of the night, no real predators maybe raccoons but most things kept clean and safe.

Then you have rural land which is where I grew up in the 80s and 90s. We were a in/out whatever the cat wants kind of family and the outside of my steel door has the scratch marks to prove it. They layed around outside and sometimes overnight. We always kept a garage window cracked so it could jump inside and we had a warm basket for them if they stayed out and didn't come back in time. Though sometimes today there are predators like coyotes and maybe a fox or buzzards.

So it's like I think the more urban you are the more it necessitates you keep your cat inside especially overnight. When you live out in the middle of nowhere the risk to yourself or them doing some kind of serious damage to others is minimal.

>And they rarely died
That's not true. They died often.

Letting cats out period significantly raises their death rate, shits up everyone elses land with diseased turds, pointlessly harms wildlife, and negates ANY effect they would have had on pests because cat vs. 1-2 intruder mice is more likely to result in a win for the cat than cat vs. endless supply of field mice.

My kot is a strange creature. He starts his day by meowing and pawing at my face until I get up around the same time every day. He does this for no reason as he usually already has food. Then as I get in the shower, he grabs his favorite rat toy in his mouth and yowls loudly through the toy most of the time I'm in there. After I'm done he leads me to his food that was already there so that he can eat. Then he spends the day alternating sleeping spots between my bed, his carrier which I leave out, the couch, the entrance mat or the floor. If I go outside he will once again pick up his toy and yowl through it (sometimes I come back within a minute and catch him in the act, upon which he stops). He enjoys pets but if I pet him from the front he'll swipe at my hands every time. He might protest pets by meowing but he'll still purr about it. Around dinner time he will once again meow for food even if he has some. When it's bed time, he will repeat his toy meowing routine one last time for good measure before hopping into bed with me and sleeping by my side or between my legs before repeating his alarm clock routine in the morning.

Unfortunately cats are difficult to train outside of their kittenhood, where the only thing I've found to really work is consistent positive reinforcement through treats when they exhibit a desired behaviour. I've always had long-haired cats that require brushing a few times a week - the difference between brushing cats that I actively coached as kittens and cats that I didn't is night and day.

Never works. As I said in the last post, through my personal experience, only positive reinforcement will effectively train cats. If you "lay down the law" and yell at a cat/reprimand it with a spray bottle etc, it just becomes afraid of you and you see more dickhead behaviours.

I don't have the exact advice you’re looking for, but lots of people struggle to tell whether a neglected cat has an owner. One simple solution that often gets overlooked is to buy a collar with a note holder attached. Write a message with your phone number, asking if the cat belongs to someone or letting people know you’re willing to adopt it. This way, it’s easy for the owner (if there is one) to get in touch.

Talk radio is also comforting for cats left alone. Something like BBC radio 4 or the BBC World Service, or whatever equivalents you have in your country.

After my gf and her cats moved in with me and my cat, my cat has taken to spraying on things. Mostly it seems like he sprays on one of the litterboxes instead of in it, but I've also found piss on a cabinet, on some walls, and on a desk

We're moving into a house in a few months, and I don't want the house ruined, so how do I get him to stop spraying on things? I don't want to banish him to living in the garage

Shock collar, cannabis+catnip brainwashing, or rehome
Anonymous No.5028006 [Report]
There's this feral cat that often takes shelter in our garden, he/she is extremely nervous and skittish around people and will not allow us to get close. We always put a bit of food out but cat won't approach the food until we are back inside the house. It's a very long haired cat that looks to be underweight and fur is falling away in clumps.

We do not have a lot of spare money so taking the cat to a vet, even if we could catch it, is out of the question unfortunately, however, we would like to try and help it in other ways if we can. I reckon it has fleas, maybe worms too.

Can anyone suggest any over the counter treatments that we could add to some food that might help? Must be available in the UK without a prescription.

Get a big spoon and a little spoon, put the pill in the big spoon, push the little spin down so it crushes the pill (careful a chunk doesn't go flying, you can do this inside a ziplock baggie), then put that into a dish of wet food, add a little water, and mix it up until its got the consistency of a thick stew.
Also tell your get to give you oral syringes. Most of that medicine can be given in liquid form. I miss when my old cat had surgery and they gave me some painkillers to give him, and I loved having that doped up kitty just nodding off in my lap for like five hours.
Or if the pill is a capsul, just pull apart the two halves of the shell, and its already powdered in there.

Have you done a slow introduction to your gfs cats, or did you just toss them all together? He's feeling insecure because his space is no longer his own. Change is hard for most cats; he needs reassurance that everything is ok and he won't be displaced by the newcomers. Spoil him, separate the gfs cats to one room and slowly introduce them (there's many guides for this online.) You can try feliway, CBD, other calming supplements, or even medications like prozac if it doesn't get better. Definitely do not use a shock or buzz collar.

Anyone had a cat with seasonal allergies before? I adopted my cat a year ago. It was summer and he had fleas and sores on his body at the time which we presumed were an irritation from the flea bites, but this year he's also got various itchy sores and scabs on his body, but no fleas. The vet gave him a steroid injection which seems to have helped, and I've been acting as though he has fleas, applying flea drops and spraying the house with a vinegar solution, which seems to help, too. Hopefully the problem is over now, as the scabs are healing and theres no new sores. Is it possible he had a few fleas try to take hold, that he managed to shake off after a few bites? If not, what sort of allergies or insects might cause itchy sores? I had a random bite on my leg recently that was hot and itchy, just a small raised red mark. Could that have been a flea or something else?

I took him to the vet after who said yeah I could do that (could never really make headway into this issue with the vet either).
The food and wipes are good ideas that we can also keep for the future, but after 2 weeks of these and conemaxxing, while his cheeks are looking much better, he clearly still has the compulsion to scratch himself.
What the fuck do I do? Is it over? Him shredding up his cheeks is awful but forcing a cone on him his whole life doesn't seem reasonable either.

If he's scratching his face constantly it might be allergies, food or otherwise (which single protein food could help). Get the vet to sell you corticosteroids to try. If that settles it it's pretty much guaranteed.

In the case it is allergies there's not much you can do. You can either do expensive allergy tests, or do elimination testing which is a pain in the ass. I just give mine half a pill every 3 days to keep it in check. He has asthma too so that helps both. It's not ideal though because long term corticosteroids can have side effects but it's the smallest dose that still helps and he's old at this point anyway.

>How common are UTI infections in cats
Can be common. Are you sure its a UTI, fixed male cats can develop an issue where their urethra gets clogged up by tiny crystals and they can't pee. That is a condition that needs to be treated by the vet immediately since their kidneys will back up and fail pretty quickly. Usually includes a catheter and an overnight stay at the vets.
Get a cat fountain (they're cheap, and you can make one yourself even cheaper), and make sure you're regularly giving them wet food. If they're hydrated and peeing regularly it will keep them flushed out.

It seems to be UTI hes uncontrollably peeing all over the place, do you think that store bought medication can work?

My cat just took a shit with a bit of yellow-y mucus in it. Quick google search says this is normal from time to time, but haven't experienced it before today. Anybody got any advice? 6 month old kitten, otherwise he seems extremely healthy and the stool itself was otherwise quite normal looking.

So my mom is kicking me out of the house, I have an outdoor cat that I've been taking care of, I plan on bringing him with me when I move out.
If I take him to the vet how do I make sure it doesnt have any worms / fleas / parasites before i bring it to my place? It eats rats sometimes so does that mean it has the toxoplasmosis?

Also i dont know if he's fixed or not, he has very small shrunken balls which makes me think hes fixed but I've also seen him "spraying" on bushes before, and i heard that male cats can sometimes piss outside the litter box on random stuff so how do I make sure he doesnt do this?
Also will it freak the cat out if I suddenly remove him from his outdoor territory and basically kidnap him? the cat is not feral, it used to be my neighbors that abandoned him, I think he used to be an indoor cat but im not sure, im just worried if he might try to rush out and escape from my new place, I heard that cats will try to go to their old home, so will I need to make sure he stays inside for a few months to get adjusted to his new home?
Its tried entering my mom's house in the past but she doesnt want to allow pets inside.
Any advice is appreciated. Pic related is him

For worms/fleas/parasites/fixing that's what the vet is for isn't it? Toxo doesn't matter.

Of course changing environments is gonna freak him out, there's no helping that no matter what you do. If you keep it outdoors there's never a guarantee he'll stay around. Best you can do is provide food and shelter so he's more likely to stick around. Not that I would recommend you keep it out though. He'll adjust over a couple weeks.

Well im assuming the parasites take a while to die so should I leave him at my mom's for a few days after the vet?
Why does toxoplasmosis not matter?

Well he's pretty chill and follows me around everywhere, im just wondering if its common for cats to bolt out of the door and not come back, if theyre not used to the area

My sweet silver tabby cat is 16 years old. He's very healthy and has all his teeth, despite me, unfortunately neglecting his dental health when he was younger. My biggest regret pertaining to his health is that I failed to brush his teeth when he was younger - and he doesn't tolerate it at his age.

I've always enjoyed the smell of his breath and drool. When he's relaxed, he drools a little bit and it smells vile but I love it so much

>close window
>cat meows at me constantly until i open it again
>open window
>she goes into the window for 30 seconds, jumps back down, jumps back up 5 minutes later and repeats until she gets sleepy
>close window when she goes to sleep
>she hears me close the window, wake up and repeat from beginning
>if i leave the window open while she sleeps she just sleeps, wakes up many hours later then repeats
wat do? i don't want to keep the window open because id rather run the air conditioning

Get some PVC pipes and a clear shower curtain and some weather stripping. Make a little frame or box that you can wedge in the window with a flap so the cat can get in, and get up to the window while its open.
You keep most of the cool air from escaping, and the cat has a little spot.
