/dog/
Welcome to /dog/, the chill zone for cataloging dogs, near-dogs, ex-dogs, and speculative canine offshoots. If it walks vaguely on four, eats socks, and howls during lunar Excel events; it belongs here.

Acceptable submissions:

• Breed theories (e.g. “Chili Beagle,” “Hamshade Shepherd,” “Bureaucratic Moondog, 3rd revision”)
• Sketches (stick figure or worse)
• Dream fragments where the dog spoke perfect Cantonese
• Grooming disasters with photo evidence (pixelated shame allowed)
• Graphs, charts, and genealogies that collapse under scrutiny

Reminder: All dogs posted must come with a vibe index, dietary lore (e.g. does it eat drywall?), and a backstory that mildly disturbs at least one moderator.

New here? Just post your dog and act like you’ve always been here. No one passes the purity test and we don’t even have one. This is a dog thread, not a monastery.

Hey guys I need some advice. So my dog likes to get high off weed and today he scared me real bad. I was sleeping after putting some pain relief thc/cbd on my back and i woke up to him licking my back and fingers. I called the poison control immediately and they told me to monitor him 30-45 minutes and if he got sick bring him in immediately. I watched him go through the motions of getting high but luckily nothing happened. Is there a way to train him not to like this shit? I hide all my shit in a box he cant get into and I have to keep him inside the house when I go outside to smoke because he will follow and breathe in as much as he can. I love my dog and don't want nothing to happen to him. Thanks in advance.

It smells faintly of pee, and has a texture that's a mix between leather and plastic. Theyre a little thicker than paper when dry. Both dogs loved it a lot.

You use them for making cured meats or steaming/poaching food in. Kinda like a primitive sous vide bag. I've cooked a whole chicken inside a pigs bladder and it was amazing.

Hi everyone,

I'm here to share what happened to my dog Nitro (15 kg mixed breed neutered male of 6 years) and get some insight or reassurance. Maybe it helps someone going through something similar.
The issue:

Last week, Nitro started licking his penis excessively. I checked the area and noticed the urethral opening (the hole where pee comes out) was red and slightly open. There was no discharge, he was acting normal, eating, drinking, and active, but he was licking himself too much.

The vet checked his urine — no blood, no proteins, no signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI) — and diagnosed local inflammation of the penis, likely due to irritation from licking or mild external infection.
The treatment:

The vet prescribed prednisolone (a corticosteroid) for 6 days:

20 mg once daily for 3 days

10 mg once daily for the next 3 days

I was also told to use a cone to stop him from licking, which I did.
The problem:

By day 4 I was at my limit with the side effects, Nitro was:

Drinking water constantly

Peeing every hour and a half

Having accidents even with outdoor breaks

The vet checked that the inflamation had gone down so she recommended that i take the cone off to check if he continues to lick (which he does)

My current concern:

It's been 3 days since his last dose of prednisolone but:

He’s still drinking a lot

He still needs to pee every 2–3 hours

If I go 4 hours without taking him out, he pees in his male dog diaper

I’m worried these side effects are not going away

I know prednisolone can take a few days to wear off, but I can’t help fearing it's something worse.
My questions:

Is it normal for side effects like thirst and frequent urination to last this long?

How many days does it usually take for a dog to return to normal after stopping prednisolone?

Ngl it seems like vets today are no different than human doctors. They're going to want to always prescribe you medication in this case it's your dog. It's honestly very grim, and then when you start to look into what people of eld did to take care of their dogs people will begin to attack you because you're "not a science truster." While they get 3 different meds to give their dog because pupperino has anxiety and a weak tummy LMAO!! While ignoring that people would have a dog live close to 20 years eating the unwanted food.
Anonymous No.5021404
>>5021396
Anons dog would have been cured by the cone and NOTHING else. Prednisolone for a sore dick is absurd.

But dogs lifespans have more to do with kennel clubs. Old dogs reproduced as long as they lived which selected for longer lifespans. "Responsible breeding" cuts off reproduction at 10-12 which means anything that kills after 10-12 spreads, and spay and neuter removes anything not "responsibly bred" from the pool.

Wolves must now be conserved so we can remake dogs after the anglo-francoid breeding tradition fully ruins them.

My purchase of a well bred purebred did not cause an increase in the number of dogs in shelter.
Me wanting a dog with a predictable temperament from healthy lineage did not cause another dog to not get adopted.
My meticulous research and support of only the most responsible of breeders is not the problem. It is not what you should be mad at. It is not what you should be pushing the blame onto.
I am not the one who brought these dogs into the world irresponsibly and left them in a shelter. Responsible breeders are not the ones who put dogs into shelters either.
It is my home, my life, and my choice of what kind of dog to bring into it. Maybe I needed a working dog, a sport dog, or simply a companion puppy to raise of a breed I enjoy. No matter the reason, my choice to support a reputable breeder did not send a shelter dog to its death.
A breeder who health tests, temperament tests, studies pedigrees, proves a dog worthy of being bred, and only breeds when doing so is of benefit to the breed is not contributing to the number of homeless dogs.
The number of homeless dogs in the world is a problem, but it is not a problem exacerbated by reputable breeders and those who purchase from them.
Your neighbor down the street who refuses to contain his unaltered dogs IS contributing to the problem.
Your friend who impulse bought a dog at PetLand IS contributing to the problem.
That guy on Craigslist pumping out the trendiest designer mix as fast as he can IS contributing to the problem.
Your relative who just HAS to let their dog have one litter “so she can experience motherhood” or because “she’s just so sweet” IS contributing to the problem.
Your old high school classmate who bought a high energy working breed without taking the time to research its needs and realize it was not a good fit for their household ahead of time IS contributing to the problem.

Absolutely, doctors and vets are generally just people who are good at memorizing stuff they read in books, not necessarily thinking independently. My best friend is a vet and he is probably like 115iq but was just extremely good at studying and worked really hard to get into university but any time I ask him a question about stuff related to dogs he just cites some random stuff that sounds like it came from a textbook. For example I asked him what his thoughts were on feeding dogs raw food and he just said something along the lines of 'feeding dogs a raw diet can be beneficial if the diet is balanced by a proper veterinary nutritionist but there are increased risks of e-coli and other bacteria when handling raw meat'. Which is a fine response although it only takes a couple braincells to realize that humans who actually cook for themselves are handling raw meat basically every day anyway so there is only a risk of e-coli if you're a crayon eater who doesn't know soap exists.

I've been trying to stop my reactive dog from hyperfocusing on people/dog when we're out on walks.

When we're in the backyard he does great listening and coming to me and getting rewarded with treats. But doing this in the backyard doesn't do jack diddly if it all goes out the window when out and about.

When he sees a person he breaks fairly easily sometimes depending on the distant, but when he sees a dog, the dog could be 30 - 50 yards away and he goes crazy.

He won't even accept the treats he just pulls towards what he wants. I've tried stopping and standing in place for 1-2 minutes to see if he loses that drive but the moment we start to move again he pulls towards where he last saw the dog.

The person with their dog could've turned the corner and be out of sight but to no avail he won't relent.

Is there really no hope for curing his reactivity?

Also reddit spaced to make this easier to read.

I got him from a family member so highly doubt he was properly socialized when he was a puppy so I'm trying to do so now but it's very very difficult
>Define "goes crazy". Is it aggressive or playful?
His hackles aren't raised when it happens so I assume he is trying to be playful but there are times where his playfulness turns to biting and hard at that
>how does he do off leash around other people n dogs?
He hates people that wear hats. He barks a lot when meeting someone new even if I let them inside the home and his hackles are raised during this. I pick him up and have the person pet him and generally he calms down but if he doesn't I put him away until he calms down.

I've never took him out and about off-leash because I'm a bit weary on if he would take off at this first thing he sees. I have another dog and he gets along with him until they both want attention and he turns into a huge asshole going after my other dog as well as the person giving attention to my other dog.

you have to slowly increase rhe difficulty level.
so next step from the lawn training would be to have a friend (or friend with a dog if possible) walk by him on the furthest edge of the lawn and train him. or some even easier step.
slowly build up and make him feel good.
find out what times works best for him to train. (you can also try to use this to limit stress during walks) some dogs are more reactive before or after feeing. some fare we'll to play a while before training, others loose focus and so on.

When it's bad tryto remember that your dog CAN be obedient and is so - in a setting that is on his current level. too much stimulus compared to what skills he has learned to regulate his energy/impulse control is going to be futile and not because he is disobedient.

ps. Also add general passivity training, it will do wonders.

pps obviously this depends on what "goes crazy" means.

Are "low energy" dog breeds ever healthy ones? With some of the ones I know there seems to be this correlation with poor physical health and being low in energy with the likes of bassets, mastiffs or bulldogs for instance. There are of course plenty of energetic and unhealthy dog breeds but not all energetic dog breeds are unhealthy, but low energy breeds do seem to clump into unhealthy heavily. With that in mind if a dog is low energy is it less about temperment and more down to them physically being unable to be more active or are there examples of healthy low energy dogs?

>Are "low energy" dog breeds ever healthy ones?
you can accomplish "low energy" in these ways
>deliberately select for the most tame and sedate dogs within a purebreed and breed them over many generations (nobody really does this because breed standards also encompass temperament)
>deform their body, whether it be airways, legs, back, chest, arms
>slam them down to toy size - deer head chihuahuas, toy fox terriers, chinese crested, miniature pinschers, papillons, toy manchester terrier, pomeranians, italian greyhounds, toy aussies/pomskies. they're not 'deformed' per-se, they have healthy body plans that happen to be tiny so they have less energy and expend more to move small distances + many were bred for companionship and not for vermin control

I am thinking about getting a dog.

I'm living alone in a house with a bit of yard/backyard in nipland.
I am away from home around 10 hours each day for work.
I may need to leave entirely for a week or two up to twice a tear due to work.
I have tatamis rooms so a large dog would probably have to stay outside of 3/4 of the house? no experience with this

I've had four big dogs in the past, but I had a huge yard, and it was many years ago, I also had much more time to spend with them.

Is there a breed (easily available in japan) suited to this lifestyle? Should I give up?

Once upon a time this just meant telling your dog no. Now that retards can use the internet it means hurting dogs and imitating "K9" trainers who are in the business of psychologically breaking animals until they are afraid to do anything but their job.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is: how can I tell my dog to not aggressively bark at the small Muslim family leaving their hotel room? And not to rush a well meaning white guy at night? I know how to do it with a prong collar, but I'm clueless without it. He won't listen to me, so saying "no" won't do crap

I haven't been on /dog/ in forever (let alone 4chan), so forgive me if this comes off as a cat vs dog post

The people here are EU NEETs/Self-employed/Retired. Who have all the time in the world to do the R+ only training. They'll tell you to keep at it until it clicks. They always conveniently ignore the three other quadrants of dog training. So unless you're someone with a bunch of free-time asking this general on how to train your dog is counter-productive. r/opendogtraining is better for advice but it's slowly being plagued with R+ only karens/kens.

>Skinner’s assertion that positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment at changing and establishing desirable behavior led to the discrediting of punitive punishment in schools and the common application of timeouts (negative reinforcement) and a token economy (i.e., rewarding good behavior with gold stars that can be accumulated for prizes) instead.
The man himself has always been in favor of positive reinforcement.

Positive punishment is an emergency option. It's not meant to be routine.
Negative punishment works fine but can harm trust if overused.

Applying the other two quadrants to people just causes an increase in violent crime. In animals it causes fear and anxiety. Behaviorism also isn't 100% reliable. Animals have minds like us and can make irrational decisions based on criteria and facts that only exist in their head.

Anonymous No.5024387

You can take it away from him, tell him no, and then give him something he's allowed to chew on which you then praise him for engaging with if he'll grab the TP with you around. I agree with all the previous points about not being harsh with your dog, but making them aware that they're not allowed to do something by using your mean voice isn't abuse.
