I legit know a ton of people that are wasting their youth grinding so they can pay off their house within 30 years. They're all on medication, SSRI's and destress by using drugs/booze in the weekends.

I fucked around during my teens and first couple years of college before getting serious. I found something I loved and got really serious and disciplined very quickly. I did grad school (MSc and PhD) and grinded like hell mostly because I loved it but also because I finally felt competitive and wanted to play the game for scholarships, opportunities and employment.

Now I’m making decent money as a researcher. I live in a great part of the country, have a family, a house, some rewarding hobbies and interests, and my field is still a very fulfilling part of my life. I was pretty active but not living a balanced lifestyle as a student so when I started working I made that a priority. I’m 37 and in the best shape of my life thanks to eating really well, lifting 3 times a week at my work gym, making a point of being active and overall just being more mindful. Life is pretty good and it’s because I put in effort.

There is a gulf between grinding like a slave and being a NEET. Also life isn’t about avoiding discomfort and hard work and just staring at a screen like a moth all day/night. You say you’re content but that just sounds like you’ve given up and are resigned to languishing at the expense of others. Actually, my job has this "benefit" called Rapid Pay where you can get half of your paycheck early (essentially you can be paid weekly instead of bi-weekly when you want) and I guess it's just for a little extra demoralization but in that app, it shows how much you have accrued and breaks the math down (wage, hours, etc). But it shows you a figure called "calculated wage" which is your approximate pay rate after figuring deductions, and it turns out I'm being "paid" $21 an hour but it's really fucking $16-somerhing.

The situation I described retard. The US military is %70+ support. There are very few front line guys by comparison. Let me give you an example; an aircraft carrier has about 3000 people but only 30 planes. Those 2970 other guys are there to keep those planes in the air and the boat running. At worst MOST military guys are going to spend their 4 years in some base in a flyover state fueling up trucks or being a supply clerk or wrenching on equipment. I make it clear in interviews that I'm not going to work more than 40 hours a week unless I'm being paid for it. It's cost me more than a few jobs but I'm perfectly fine with that.
